For six weeks the tape sold risk with nowhere to put the proceeds. Tuesday it found somewhere, and the destination is cyclical, not defensive. The money that left the AI complex did not hide in cash or gold — it bought travel, airlines, builders and retail, the exact block that spent July being left for dead.
Travel was the loudest. Expedia rose 11.64% on the week to RSI 70.3, the sector's highest, and now sits 2.64% from a 52-week high; Booking rose 11.1% with its 30-day change flipping from −2.09% to +9.26%; Royal Caribbean posted the sector's best week at +12.02%. Airbnb closed 0.05% from its own 52-week high after printing the sector's worst week only three sessions earlier. Hilton, still −2.54% on the week and the only sub-50 RSI in the group, is the lone holdout.
Airlines repaired structurally rather than just bouncing. All six carriers carry a strong-up trend for the first time in this cluster's recent record, with Southwest and American — both broken in the prior two passes — reversing back to strong-up together. The RSI moves were double-digit (the airline fund +12.3 points to 56.9, Delta +10.3 to 59.9), and every single carrier narrowed its distance to a 52-week high, several by more than seven points.
| Where the bid landed | Tuesday's read | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Travel | EXPE +11.64% week, RSI 70.3; BKNG +11.1%; ABNB 0.05% from its high | EXPE and BKNG both still carry death-cross flags |
| Airlines | All six strong-up; JETS RSI 56.9; ALK +6.93% week | No carrier has turned its 30-day positive; AAL still −14.29% |
| Homebuilders | XHB's death cross flipped golden, RSI 53.2, +3.49% week | Still −4.98% on the month; ITB remains death-crossed |
| Retail / consumer | Oversold cohort emptied: DECK 34.7→49.5, WMT 38.1→48.8, XLY 32.9→43.0 | XLY still death-crossed and −3.96% on 30 days |
| Financials | XLF RSI 72.0 at a 52-week high | Outright overbought on day one of leadership |
Homebuilders produced the session's one clean structural repair: the builder fund's death cross flipped back to golden at RSI 53.2 on a +3.49% week, with the home-construction fund up 5.69% and still death-crossed underneath it. In retail, nobody is left oversold — Deckers jumped 15 RSI points in four sessions on a single +6.33% day, Walmart climbed out of the warning zone, Shopify round-tripped its own reversal with its 30-day change swinging from −0.37% back to +14.07%, and Abercrombie ran +12.06% on the week.
None of this is a growth scare being bought — it is a rates repricing being spent. Every tracked bond fund climbed out of oversold in one session, long Treasuries leading at RSI 33.0 to 47.5, while high-yield credit recovered to RSI 46.2 and, alone in the complex, never carried a death cross at all. Orderly credit under a broad cyclical bid is what distinguishes rotation from stress.
The whole move is one week old, and the structure has not caught up to the price. Expedia and Booking still carry death-cross flags the rally has outrun. Not one airline has turned its 30-day change positive. Consumer discretionary bounced 10 RSI points and is still death-crossed and negative on the month. Financials arrived at the party already overbought, RSI 72.0 at a 52-week high.
Which sets the terms. An 11% week is a chase, not an entry — the test is the first red week and whether it holds above the 20-day. The builder cross is the one condition already met; it earns interest only if it survives a retest rather than flipping back inside a month. And the tell for the whole rotation is the 30-day column: until travel and the carriers turn it positive, this is a violent mean-reversion inside a downtrend, not new leadership.
