Gold Broke Its Own Breakdown Level. The Miners Didn't Follow.

Article Ticker Tape

Gold settled Friday at $408.89 — below $410, the full-breakdown marker the Gold Anomaly thesis has carried since May, and 1.4% under its 200-day average of $414.79. It is the second crossing of that average in two weeks; gold closed above it on August 22. The confirmation the original breakdown case demanded is absent. Miner equity is 11.6% above its own 200-day on a +62.48% year.

The reversal is the sharpest single move on the macro board. GLD's RSI fell from 71.2 to 54.6 — a 16.6-point drop, the largest of any name in the August 28 Market Pulse — on a week that took the price down 3.45%. The trailing year is still +29.79% and the 30-day is +10.19%. An overbought condition is being worked off around a line the price has been oscillating through, and the $410 marker has fired before: it fired in early June near $407.87, after which gold spent the summer climbing back above it.

What the original case predicted was miners leading the metal down. In the spring that tell was explicit — GDX fell from $100 to $88 in five sessions, led gold lower, and by late June was death-crossed and amplifying the decline. This week inverts it. GDX closed $99.65, 11.6% above its 200-day at RSI 62.9, cooling from a parabolic 75.3 rather than breaking. SIL is the same shape: 11.5% above its own average on a +75.94% year. The leveraged leg of the complex is holding the strongest structure in it.

Ticker Price RSI 7D 1Y vs 200-day NOTE
GLD $408.89 54.6 -3.45% +29.79% -1.4% Below the line and below $410; year still strong
GDX $99.65 62.9 -3.07% +62.48% +11.6% Cooled from RSI 75.3; no confirmation of the metal's break
SIL $99.14 63.6 -0.45% +75.94% +11.5% Same shape as GDX
SLV $60.02 54.4 -4.29% +68.98% -7.7% Gap to its own average widened from -2.8%
UUP $28.18 53.5 +0.97% +2.88% +1.6% Flat dollar — not the driver either way

Silver is the complex's genuinely damaged leg, and this week is not why. SLV closed $60.02, 7.7% below its own 200-day, a gap that widened from 2.8%. Its 1Y change is +68.98%, second only to silver miners across the metals complex, yet it is the one bullion fund sitting further under its long-term average than gold. Silver has been round-tripping beneath that average while its miners run well above theirs. That split is wider than gold's and older.

No fresh gold-specific attribution has landed for this week's move; the most recent coverage on file, from mid-August, still named rates and inflation expectations rather than fear. Nothing elsewhere on the board argues a fear bid: volatility stayed pinned in collapse regime (VIXY at RSI 31.7, VXX 32.1), the dollar is flat on the year at +2.88%, and long Treasuries remain the one broken haven at -4.98% over the year and 4.1% below their own average. A dedollarization angle — China building CIPS-based hedges against dollar-sanctions exposure — circulated this week, but nothing ties it to gold specifically. It is an unverified candidate driver, not a mechanism.

One level and one week resolve this. A GLD close back above $414.79 that holds for a full week reads the break as whipsaw. Failure to reclaim it confirms a trend break on a metal still up 29.79% over the year — a deep pullback, not a collapse, and not a hard-asset unwind either, with copper up 92.93% over the same window. GDX is the tell to watch: while miners hold 11.6% above their average, the break belongs to bullion alone. Miners losing their own 200-day is what would turn a level breach into the pattern the original case described.
