Optics Is Pricing the Laser Shortage, Not the Module Cycle

Article Ticker Tape

The optical rally is a laser-capacity trade, and the tape shows it. At the October 2 close Lumentum sat 0.57% under its 52-week high after a 539.42% trailing year, while the companies that assemble modules and sell systems around the lasers stayed far below theirs: Coherent 23.4% under, Ciena 38.61%, Fabrinet 38.08%, Applied Optoelectronics 50.53% (the desk's summaries, October 2 close). The optical book closed 25 of 28 names green on Friday and the adjacent wafer-equipment and test book closed 13 of 13 green (the October 2 optical and WFE scans). The supply story is being priced where supply is scarcest. That is also where the stretch is.

The question

Is the move pricing a real shortage, meaning qualified laser capacity short through 2027–29 plus possible US curbs on Chinese transceivers, or a momentum chase? The shortage claims rest on management language and analyst notes passed along by attributed carriers. The tape shows the market believes them for one layer of the stack and not yet for the others.

Every long trend in the table is intact except Fabrinet's. Fabrinet is 12.8% under its 200-day with a 25.47% trailing year; its trend is under test, not broken. Ciena sits exactly on its 200-day. The rest are 6% to 98% above it.

What is in hand, and what is carried

Lumentum's growth is filed. Its shortage claim is not. Fiscal Q4 2026 revenue was $1.01B against $480.7M a year earlier (quarter ended June 27, per the filing), and the company guided fiscal Q1 2027 to $1.225B–$1.275B (Lumentum's August 11 release; a guide, not a result). The 2027 shortfall comes from a transcription posted by the photonics account Serenity before Friday's open. It quotes the CEO at the Global Photonics Economic Forum: "we'll be undershipping demand… by 70%… By 2029-2030, we get to some level of balance." That is a carrier's transcription of a recording, not a Lumentum disclosure.

The curbs story is an analyst note passed along secondhand. On October 1, P Equity Research, Serenity and KawzInvests relayed a Morgan Stanley read from Washington meetings. In that read, restrictions would start at 3.2T modules made in China, Chinese modules with 65% US bill-of-materials content would still qualify, and the main effect would show up in laser pricing rather than in shifted module share. The same relay says 3.2T volume is not expected to ramp until 2029. The note itself is not in hand. Thursday's optics surge was tied to it in real time by those posts, and one account also passed along an unconfirmed Goldman optics note. Read the tape against that: if the curbs matter, they matter through laser pricing and qualification, which is the layer trading at its high.

Friday's leg has no attribution. Lumentum rose 3.79%, Coherent 5.59%, Applied Optoelectronics 7.71% and MaxLinear 14.99%. News pulls taken Friday evening carry nothing dated October 2 for any of the six names checked. MaxLinear's newest items are an October 1 notice setting its Q3 call for October 22 and a September 28 cable-chip launch, and neither explains the move. Stock-event files were checked too. The CEO transcription was circulating before the open, but no source ties the day's move to it, so the cause is unknown.

Where it is stretched

  • MaxLinear is the extreme: 97.6% above its 200-day, RSI 71.5, up 76.26% in thirty days, with the day's move unexplained. The DSP-beneficiary angle is speculation by one carrier ("maybe $MXL for DSPs too"), not a disclosure.
  • Lumentum is 15.3% above its 20-day at its high. Its CFO sold 24,542 shares, about $25.7M, on October 1 (Form 4 filed October 2), and its president sold in early September. At $937 on September 23, before this week's leg, it traded near 169x GAAP trailing earnings. The trend is not in doubt; the entry price is.
  • Semtech (66.7% above its 200-day, 3.52% off its high) and AXT (up 1,727.02% on the year, 50.78% in a month) price the component read-through in full.
  • Next door, FormFactor and Axcelis are both above RSI 72 on the WFE board.

The cheaper expressions of the same theme are the laggards. Coherent, Ciena and Applied Optoelectronics are above or on their 200-day lines and well off their highs. They are not paying the laser premium yet, and their reports will show whether the shortage reaches their margins.

What would change it

Watch Date What it tests
Fabrinet fiscal Q1 report around Nov 2 (provider estimate) Opens the campaign's two-report test: orders and margins under added capacity
Coherent, then Lumentum reports around Nov 4 and Nov 5 Whether "undershipping by 70%" shows up as pricing and guidance, or stays forum language
Any filed text on 3.2T curbs open Turns a secondhand analyst note into a rule. The 65% US-content escape is the detail to read
Lumentum's 20-day average live A flag that holds it resets the setup; a close under the 50-day ends it

The thesis breaks if added capacity or substitution shows up as order weakness and margin pressure across two supplier reports.

Entry A flag that holds above Lumentum's 20-day average ($941.73 at the Oct 2 close) while RSI cools below 60, then a close at a new 52-week high
Invalidation A close below the 50-day ($879.03 at the Oct 2 close), or fiscal Q1 2027 revenue below the $1.225B low end of guidance at the report expected around Nov 5
