The week was a rotation inside the AI trade, and a narrow one: money went to owners of power plants already running and stayed away from businesses that need outside financing to build. Constellation, Vistra and Talen rose 15.33% to 18.02% in the week to October 9, while the chip fund (SMH) fell 4.32% and Arm, SK hynix's US shares and Intel each lost more than 12% (the desk's summaries, October 9 close). The power winners are repairing trends, down 14.83% to 23.1% on the year. The parts of the power trade that depend on new builds did not get the bid: GPU hosts broke, the uranium fund fell and 5 of 19 backup-power makers rose. Nothing this week is a disclosed spending cut. The test comes in the last week of October, when the hyperscalers guide capex and GE Vernova reports orders.
The question
OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was about $50 billion at the end of September. The widely cited $68 billion to $70 billion added sales routed through cloud partners (Financial Times, confirmed by CNBC, October 8). AI hardware sold that day. If the move from chips into power is a rotation, both legs keep their long trends and the equipment new data centers need keeps converting orders. If it is a vote that spending is peaking, the selling spreads from chips into the build-out suppliers, and only plants already selling electricity hold.
Power moved first, then sold on the report day
Most of the power gain came on Tuesday, October 6, two days before the OpenAI report, on company news. Constellation rose 12.25% after a Google agreement that MarketWatch said equals a new reactor's output. It has been described as a 20-year agreement for 890 MW of new PJM capacity, but no issuer or primary source for those terms is on file. Vistra rose 10.77% on a $4.2 billion Department of Energy loan commitment for three of its nuclear plants, as reported by The Motley Fool; no DOE release is on file. Talen rose 12.43%. Only aggregator pages tie that move to its PJM capacity-auction result, so the cause is not established (the October 6 market brief).
On October 8, power sold with the chips. Vistra fell 6.35% with no cause on file, and the broader AI-power list closed 6 of 54 up at a −3.1% median while the chip fund lost 2.84% (the October 8 market brief and the October 9 Market Pulse scan). Friday was the only session that looked like a hand-off: Talen rose 5.39%, Constellation 4.56% and Vistra 3.42%, while Arm fell 3.27% and Intel 2.22%. News pulled after Friday's close carries nothing dated October 9 for the three power names. Talen's newest items are undated aggregator pages restating a September 29 CEO succession and buyback. Stock-event files and the day's captures hold nothing on the moves, so Friday's cause is not on file.

Compute is in a deep pullback inside intact trends. The chip fund sits 19.2% above its 200-day on a 75.32% year. Arm is 21% above its line on a 56.03% year, and Intel 26.1% above on 176.98%. No chip name on the NVIDIA Ecosystem board has a negative year. SK hynix's US shares listed in July and have no 200-day yet.
The power winners are repairs, not leaders. Constellation, Vistra and Talen sit 4.2% to 7.6% above their 200-day lines with negative years and negative alpha. That is the bottom-then-pop shape, and the October 9 Turnaround Watch scan lists Constellation and Vistra as deep-drawdown names turning up with their death crosses still in place. Neither has formed the flag that would make it a trend, and Talen closed at RSI 69.4.
The capex-funded side broke. CoreWeave, IREN, Cipher, TeraWulf, Applied Digital and Core Scientific all closed below their 200-day lines on flat or negative years. Only Nebius (28.9% above its line) and Hut 8 (3.6% above) held their trends. The uranium fund fell 2.24% and sits 19% under its 200-day. Cameco and Centrus rose 3.38% and 2.28% but stay under theirs, so the fuel cycle did not share the plant owners' repair.
The backup-power group
The group covers 19 makers of standby generators and engines, fuel cells, mobile gas turbines, UPS systems, batteries and power-quality equipment. It split by trend instead of moving as one, and only five members rose on the week.

Trend: intact is above the 200-day and up on the year; under test is below or on the 200-day and up on the year; broken is below it and down on the year. The three research-only rows are foreign or OTC lines.
The equipment that sells into new builds did not share the power bid. Vertiv fell 3.73% and sits 9% under its 200-day despite a 43.76% year. Its long trend is under test, and its third-quarter report is scheduled for October 21 (provider date). Caterpillar closed on its 200-day line, and Cummins and EnerSys sit below theirs. The intact members are led by GE Vernova (8.5% above its 200-day, 58.41% year) and Solaris Energy Infrastructure (23% above, 60.2%). The week's best performer, Power Solutions International, rose 11.64% but is on the broken list: 7.8% under its 200-day after a 45.09% loss on the year. Eos fell 21.5%; two October 8 stock-news items cite a securities-litigation investigation and heavy cash burn (the October 9 AI Sector scan). Eos, Plug, Ballard and Fluence are broken trends, not setups.
The strain is in financing
The OpenAI number lowered the revenue base the build-out has to earn back; by CNBC's account the gap is a booking choice. Chris Camillo frames it as gross against net: the customer spending exists either way. The harder version came hours before the report: Shanu Mathew, relaying a Goldman Sachs estimate, put the AI revenue that 2026–27 hyperscaler capex needs for a 20% return at about $526 billion a year, and his math assumed the higher OpenAI figure. A smaller base widens that gap without cancelling an order.
The strain shows up where outside money funds the build. Bloomberg reported on October 8 that Firmus Grid is expected to postpone its Australian IPO after a run of weak AI-infrastructure debuts. On Friday, Semafor and CNBC both ran data-center financing-risk stories. SemiAnalysis adds the demand side: H100 rental prices have risen on a chip lenders model as losing value, a sign that compute is still scarce. Taken together, the market is discounting businesses that must borrow against future builds and paying for plants that already sell electricity.
What would tell us which
| Watch | Date | Rotation if | Peak vote if |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASML, then TSMC report | Oct 14, Oct 15 (scheduled) | Orders and guides hold; the chip fund holds its 50-day (578.24 at the 2026-10-09 close) | Order push-outs or a guide-down; the chip fund loses its 50-day |
| Vertiv's third quarter | Oct 21 (provider date) | The $14B sales outlook holds, with organic growth separate from acquisitions | The outlook is cut or backlog conversion slips |
| Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta; then Amazon | Oct 28; Oct 29 (provider dates) | Capex guides hold or rise | A capex guide-down or a cancellation disclosed in a filing or on a call |
| GE Vernova's third quarter | Oct 28 (provider date) | Orders and backlog grow with stable margins | Cancellations or deferrals named; margins fall |
| Constellation and Vistra 200-day lines | live (286.14 and 154.74 at the 2026-10-09 close) | A pullback holds them and forms a flag | A close back under them returns both to broken |
Bloom (October 27) and Generac (October 28) also report inside that window. The peak-vote case needs a disclosed cut, not a weak week. If chips hold their 50-day lines through the foundry reports and GE Vernova's orders convert, this week was a rotation toward running generation with a financing discount on the build-out. If a hyperscaler guides capex down and the selling reaches GE Vernova and Eaton while the plant owners hold, the market was voting on the peak.
