Dell Technologies Inc. (DELL) NYSE | $178.02 | Market Cap: $118.8B | 97,000 employees

The Story Right Now

Dell just had one of the most violent short squeezes in large-cap tech this year. Up 30% in a month, up nearly 20% in the last week alone — this isn't a slow grind. Something broke loose. That something is AI server demand, and Dell is sitting directly in the blast radius.

The Q4 FY2026 earnings print was the catalyst: AI-optimized server revenue hit $24.6B for the full year, up 300%+ YoY. The $43 billion AI server backlog is the number that's sending analysts scrambling to revise targets. At $50B in projected AI server revenue for FY2027, Dell isn't dabbling in this cycle — it is the cycle for anyone who needs to physically build out AI infrastructure at enterprise scale.

Here's the tension that makes this trade uncomfortable: every major insider is selling. Michael Dell personally dumped ~$1B in stock over six months. The insider signal is unambiguously bearish — 0 buys, 100% sells, -$5.4B net value. When the founder and CEO is a consistent, heavy seller into this rally, you have to ask what he knows about the sustainability of these margins that the market doesn't yet.

The answer might be sitting in the gross margin line. AI servers are low-margin hardware. As AI server revenue grows as a percentage of total revenue, gross margins compress. FQ2 2026 gross margin was 18.3% — compare that to FQ4 2024 at 23.8%. The revenue line is exploding, but the quality of that revenue is quietly deteriorating. Dell is becoming an AI server assembler at scale, and assemblers don't get software multiples.

That said, the forward P/E of 11.56x against an industry average of 27.72x means the market hasn't re-rated this yet. If backlog converts cleanly and FY2027 guidance of $138-142B in revenue holds, the earnings power justifies a higher multiple. SMCI's ongoing governance crisis is also a genuine tailwind — Dell is gaining market share from a competitor in distress.

Four percent from its all-time high. Overbought RSI at 76. Insiders selling. Margins compressing. Backlog at $43B. This is a stock that demands an opinion.
