Editorial Note: Tesla is the one stock in this market where the bear case and the bull case are both completely compelling — and they have nothing to do with each other. The bear case is Musk: DOGE brand damage, European boycott, and the possibility that the man running the company is also running it into the ground. The bull case is Terafab: a $25B semiconductor factory that, if real, makes Tesla a vertically integrated AI-hardware company. The stock at RSI 33 is your entry point to pick your side.

The Story Right Now

Tesla has now shed -26% from its 52-week high and is sitting at $369, almost exactly where it was a year ago when it traded around $259 — wait, actually the 12m data tells a different story. TSLA opened March 31, 2025 at $249 and is now at $369, meaning it's actually up roughly +42% over 12 months even after this significant pullback from the $498 52-week high. That context matters enormously. This is not a broken stock recovering from a multi-year collapse — it's a stock that ran to extreme highs on Musk enthusiasm and is now repricing on Musk backlash.

The -26% from 52wk highs arrived in two phases. Phase 1 (November 2025 through early March 2026): the golden cross led a rally to $498 as Musk's government role and FSD/Optimus narrative drove speculative interest. Phase 2 (March 2026): the macro hit everything, and TSLA got hit harder than most because Musk's political activities accelerated European brand damage in ways that the March 20 Reuters piece made concrete — "European sales rise for the first time in over a year, but still lag behind BYD." The "finally" in that headline carries a lot of weight.

The war-ends playbook has a specific TSLA call that's actually bearish in the near term: "EVs face a headwind when oil drops. When gas is $3/gallon instead of $5, the EV fuel savings argument weakens." That's the key counter-thesis here. The Iran conflict that's pushed oil to $130/barrel has also, paradoxically, made the EV value proposition easier to sell. If a ceasefire happens and oil drops to $70, the urgency for EV adoption fades. Tesla selling at premium prices to ICE alternatives needs the "fuel savings" math to work — and that math degrades sharply at lower oil prices.

But then there's Terafab. The March 23 news of a $25B semiconductor factory aimed at Tesla's AI capabilities is the most significant strategic announcement in years. If real and on schedule, this transforms Tesla from a company dependent on TSMC and NVIDIA for AI silicon into a vertically integrated AI hardware company. It changes the whole bull/bear framework. The problem is Tesla has a track record of announcing ambitious manufacturing projects and delivering them late and over budget. Terafab deserves healthy skepticism.

Today's bounce (+3.8%, from $355.28 to $369.02) reverses some of the brutal March 27-30 selloff. The stock breached its BB lower band ($356-$358) and found buyers. RSI at 33.6 is oversold but not extreme — MSFT and NVDA are in more distressed territory. The SMA20 at $387 is the first recovery target; getting back above it would signal the downtrend is losing momentum.
