Micron is formally an add candidate again — and the right entry is still not today's price. The pullback condition set on June 25 (back under $1,000 with momentum washed toward the low 40s) has fired: MU closed July 17 at $848.95, RSI 41, down 25% on the month, 32% off its high. But down here is a falling tape, not a base. The entry is the reclaim.
Where the tape is
This is a pullback inside an intact secular uptrend, not a broken chart: MU still sits 76% above its 200-day ($483), the golden cross is intact, and the 3-month return is +89% even after the give-back. What's lost is the near trend — price is 9% below the 50-day ($934) and 17% below the 20-day ($1,023), and the weekly tape is still pointing down.
The problem with buying the dip at a level of your choosing: there is no shelf under this price. The run up was vertical, so the volume profile between here and roughly $679 (the top of the old value area) is nearly empty — no tape memory to lean on. A limit order in that gap is a knife-catch dressed as patience.
The ladder — already armed on the desk's open calls
The desk put the triggers on the record this week; this note orders them into one ladder, bottom to top:
- Dead below $804 — Friday's low. Friday printed a reversal candidate (low $804, close $848.95); a close back under that low voids it. The knife is still falling; do nothing.
- First confirm: a close above $903.93 — Friday's reversal-bar high (the July 18 turn-signature call). This is the earliest tranche the tape can justify — and only if the pricing gate below also holds.
- Trend re-take: ~$934 — the 50-day. Above it the pullback has formally resolved and the trend has the tape again.
- The full trend-hold entry: a base, then the 20-day reclaim, ~$1,023. Bottom → pop → flag → breakout, complete. This is the size-up point, not the first look.
- The fire-sale exception. A single-day volatility spike that takes everything down redeems uptrend-intact charts — MU qualifies. The one "buy the red day" case the playbook allows.
The gate that runs beside the chart: the storage and memory prints (July 28–29, then August 5). The July 17 call gates any memory-complex entry on those prints showing DRAM/NAND pricing intact. A print that shows pricing momentum actually rolling invalidates the add case at any price — then the derate was early, not wrong.
Why the thesis half is not the question
The dip is a multiple problem, not a demand problem. Fiscal Q3 revenue was $41.5B — one quarter now exceeds all of fiscal 2025 — with about $100B contracted across strategic agreements. The July 13 read of the selloff holds: this is an ASP repricing (Micron's own floor-and-ceiling contracts cap what it can charge on roughly 40% of revenue), and MU fell least of the memory names through it. Beyond the near-term prints, Micron's own next guide is the event that speaks directly to HBM4 pricing and timing.
The honest counterweights, and why the stance stays watch rather than buy: insiders are 1 buy against 54 sells, the stock still trades ~70% above its volume-weighted anchor from the lows, and quarter-over-quarter growth is decelerating at the margin. Demand is proven; the price you pay for it is the open question.
Watch: above $903.93 (reversal confirmed — first tranche eligible, pricing gate permitting) · then $934 / $1,023 (trend re-take, then the full entry) · dead under $804 (reversal void) · under $679 the add-candidate case is gone entirely; under $483 the thesis itself goes back for re-examination.
