AI Compute and Power: Two Kinds of Down

Article Ticker Tape

September 6 update: The live entry plans for NBIS below are superseded by Campaign 1. Original calls and evidence questions remain in the historical record; supersession does not declare an unresolved business condition satisfied.

Summary

Every name in the AI compute-and-power complex is down hard from its highs, and almost every one of them is down for a different reason. On the 2026-08-21 close, nine of the ten names tracked in the neocloud group fell on the week and all ten sit between 27% and 49% below their 52-week highs. Read on a one-week chart they look like a single event. They are not. Three of them never participated in the move that made this lane famous; five have given back enough to put their long trend genuinely in question; two are up more than 230% over the past year and are still trading comfortably above their 200-day averages. The distinction is not cosmetic — it is the difference between a drawdown to sit through and a thesis to abandon, and the weekly numbers hide it completely.

The week says one thing, the year says another

The steepest one-week decline in the group belongs to Nebius, off 21.13%. That number, on its own, would put it at the top of any damage ranking. It is also up 231.11% over the past year, sits 46.8% above its 200-day average of $149.25, and is only 26.92% below its 52-week high — the smallest drawdown of the ten. The worst one-week print in the lane belongs to the healthiest chart in it.

Run the same test on CoreWeave and it inverts. CoreWeave fell 16.54% on the week, which reads as slightly less bad. Over a full year it is down 3.24%, trailing the broad index by roughly 25 points, and it now trades 4.5% below its own 200-day. Galaxy Digital is the same shape: the only name in the group that rose last week, up 9.29%, and the only other one with a negative year behind it, down 1.05% and trailing by roughly 23 points. A green week and a broken multi-year trend can coexist, and here they do.

Sorted by the year rather than the week, the lane separates cleanly. Hut 8 and Nebius are in intact multi-year uptrends taking violent pullbacks — both still above their 200-day averages. Cipher, IREN, Applied Digital, TeraWulf and Core Scientific all had strong years and have since lost their 200-day; their trends are not broken so much as on trial, and that average is the line that settles it. CoreWeave and Galaxy are the genuinely damaged names, flat to down over a year in a lane that doubled.

Chronology explains the confusion. The power-and-mining leg cracked a month ago — Cipher is down 35.53% over thirty days, Hut 8 down 26.40%, Core Scientific down 24.60% — while the GPU-native names were still positive over the same window, Nebius up 0.44% and CoreWeave up 6.30%. Only in the past week did the second leg follow. What looks like one cohort breaking together is the later group catching down to where the earlier group already sat, and it says nothing about whether the leaders' businesses changed.

What would change the read

The 200-day average is the only level that matters across all ten. Nebius holding $149.25 keeps the strongest chart in the lane intact; losing it would mark the first real damage to a trend that has survived every drawdown so far. Hut 8 holding $73.08 does the same for the group's best one-year performer. On the other side, Cipher reclaiming $18.52 and Applied Digital reclaiming $32.30 would turn "trend on trial" back into "trend intact" — and until then, strength in those names is a bounce, not a repair.

The lane does not deserve a single verdict, which is the whole finding. Nebius is the cleanest expression of the intact half: the largest one-week decline in the group, the smallest drawdown from its high, and the widest cushion above its 200-day. That combination is what a pullback in a working trend looks like, and it is worth watching rather than chasing while it sits 46.8% extended above that average. The broken half needs no call — a name down over a year in a lane that doubled has already given its answer.
