Friday charged Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile 10% to 13% each for a Starlink mobile network that SpaceX's own prospectus ties to a November 2027 spectrum close, a new satellite generation and, for full performance, new handsets. The company that lost something concrete is AST SpaceMobile. On their first full session after SpaceX agreed to buy Grain Management's 800 MHz licenses, T-Mobile fell 13.27%, AT&T 10.82% and Verizon 10.14%, on 3.66 to 4.3 times average volume (the desk's summaries, October 9 close). CNBC called it Verizon's worst day since 2002. AST SpaceMobile fell 10.47% on 4.85 times its usual volume, while SpaceX rose 1.25% and American Tower 9.3% on a day the S&P 500 fund gained 0.6%.
The question
Who pays for SpaceX's move into US mobile, who collects, and what would show Friday's pricing was wrong. The terms are reported, not filed: up to 14 MHz of paired low-band spectrum, subject to FCC approval, price undisclosed (CNBC, October 8). SpaceX's announcement says the licenses "will pave the way for Starlink to become a major mobile carrier in the US."

SpaceX listed June 12 and has no one-year or 200-day history.
Who pays now, and who pays later
AST SpaceMobile's loss is specific. The Economic Times reported Friday that the Grain spectrum was a source AST SpaceMobile had pursued, and SpaceX's prospectus names AST, Lynk, Globalstar and Skylo as Starlink Mobile's competitors. The stock was broken before the news. It is up 125.43% over two years but down 41.27% over one, 57.28 points behind the S&P 500 fund, 36.9% under its 200-day and 61.92% off its high.
The carriers were charged for the end state. Starlink Mobile today runs on about 650 first-generation mobile satellites carrying texts, light data and app-based voice, sold through partners that include T-Mobile in the US (SpaceX's June prospectus). The same filing says SpaceX will compete "to be the preferred connectivity experience" in rural, suburban and urban areas. It also says the next-generation constellation is designed around the EchoStar spectrum, which SpaceX expects to close in November 2027, and that full 5G performance "would likely require handset manufacturers to implement hardware and software modifications" in future devices. The 800 MHz block adds indoor reach. Aakash Gupta's widely shared read is that a 2 GHz satellite signal dies at the first wall while 800 MHz gets inside, and that most phones already carry the band; the block's history as Sprint's old Nextel spectrum is his account, not a filing.
None of the three carriers had a trend to defend. Verizon is up 2.01% on the year, 14 points behind the index, down 5.58% over two years, and 10.5% under its 200-day ($46.53) at RSI 21.8: a flat year that has fallen out of its trend. AT&T (down 15.02% on the year, 11.8% under its 200-day) and T-Mobile (down 34.32%, 22% under) were broken before Friday. T-Mobile fell hardest while being SpaceX's US partner. It also announced a CFO transition and a 15% dividend increase on October 8 (its press-release page), and no source separates those from the spectrum news. An oversold reading on a flat or falling year is not an entry.
Who collects
SpaceX passed a supply test the same day. Friday was a scheduled lock-up release of up to 328.4 million shares, per the prospectus schedule laid out in the September 17 SpaceX dive. The stock closed up 1.25% at $162.57 on ordinary volume (0.97 times average). Thursday's $160.57 and Friday's close both sit above the $156.87 range high the September 25 space report set as its entry alert. The next release falls on Saturday, October 24, so it first trades October 26.
American Tower rose 9.3% on 2.97 times its usual volume. Investing.com tied its pre-open jump to the SpaceX deal and called tower owners beneficiaries without saying why. A tower landlord gains only if some of the 800 MHz band is lit from ground sites, which would make SpaceX a tenant. Nothing SpaceX has published says how it will deploy the band, so this is the market's guess. American Tower is 3.1% above its 200-day on a year down 1.66%: a repair, not a trend.
EchoStar is due about 261.8 million SpaceX shares when its spectrum sale closes (the prospectus). It rose 1.59%; news on file for it ends October 6, so the move has no attribution.
Viasat rose 6.82% with its long trend intact: up 102.73% on the year and 16.6% above its 200-day. Friday's news search for it failed and no report on file names it, so the cause is not on file. It still closed under the 50-day ($74.82) that the September 25 report set as its entry line and above the $69.33 shelf that would end that watch.
Globalstar and Iridium barely moved (up 0.72% and down 0.19%). Both trade on takeover terms, Amazon's and Rocket Lab's, so the news reaches them through the buyer's stock. Rocket Lab closed at $68.21, under the $68.29 volume shelf the September 25 report named as the invalidation of its watch. Its falls of 4.18% on October 7 and 4.89% on October 8 have no sourced cause; its news on file ends September 26.
What would show the market has it wrong
| Watch | Date | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| FCC vote on seeking comment on 482 MHz more spectrum for coverage from space | Oct 29 (scheduled) | A request for comment opens a proceeding and allocates nothing yet; a fast track would support Friday's pricing |
| FCC approval of the Grain license transfer | not set | When the indoor layer arrives; the price is still undisclosed |
| AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile reports | Oct 21; around Oct 26 and Oct 28 (provider estimates) | Whether churn or pricing already show a Starlink effect, and what T-Mobile says about its SpaceX partnership |
| SpaceX third-quarter report | Nov 3 (calendared) | First disclosure after the deal; up to 1.3 billion more shares unlock two sessions later |
| AST SpaceMobile report | around Nov 9 (provider date) | Whether it names replacement spectrum |
| How SpaceX deploys the 800 MHz band | open | Ground sites make SpaceX a tower tenant; satellites make it a tower substitute |
The carriers' drop is early if the Grain approval and the October 29 item move at ordinary FCC speed and the October reports show no churn change. The confirming tape is a close back above the 200-day: Verizon $46.53, AT&T $25.15, T-Mobile $190.38. It is right if SpaceX prices a retail plan or reworks its T-Mobile partnership before the spectrum closes. AST SpaceMobile has no such cushion: a named competitor bought spectrum it had reportedly pursued.

| Invalidation | The pass is wrong on a close above the 50-day average that holds through the report the provider dates to Nov 9 |
