Energy disruption: physical flows and exporter economics

Persistent physical energy-supply disruption can improve selected exporters’ realized economics until flows recover; oil, gas and LNG transmission must be proved separately.

Why now
EIA’s August assessment documents disruption and a conditional recovery path. The September outlook is the next scheduled checkpoint; current company transmission remains incomplete.
In scope
Verified oil and gas flows, inventories, freight and realized company economics · The energy-flow branch of the former Gulf scenario
Out of scope
Predicting the political end of the war · Treating public attention or price moves as proof of lost supply · Qatar helium/fabrication contagion without direct evidence · Assuming refiners, producers and services benefit equally
Expected horizon
Weeks to 6 months; reassess at each material flow change and monthly EIA outlook.
What supports it
Official or operator evidence confirms continuing lost supply or costly rerouting · Reported volumes and realized margins identify actual beneficiaries
What would break it
Flows normalize and inventories rebuild without sustained exporter margin advantage · Demand destruction or costs eliminate the proposed beneficiary economics

Next review 2026-10-30 · Read ExxonMobil and Chevron third-quarter results (scheduled 2026-10-30, provider estimates) and Cheniere (2026-10-29) for realized oil, gas and LNG prices and upstream margins against the pre-war base; ConocoPhillips, EOG and Targa follow on 2026-11-05. Before then, capture the October Short-Term Energy Outlook as a source and read it against the September outlook (released 2026-10-06 per news coverage, but only a one-paragraph summary is on file), read the bodies of ExxonMobil's 8-K (2026-09-25) and Chevron's 8-K (2026-10-05), and capture the late-September flow reports (Kpler near 80% of pre-war, CNBC crude exports at pre-war, Fortune October 4) so they can be linked. Earlier on an official Hormuz closure or re-escalation notice, tanker attacks that reverse the flow recovery, or a change to the G7 stock release. As of the 2026-10-16 review: the re-escalation and the attack half of the tanker condition have fired on named-wire reports (2026-10-06 to 2026-10-16), so further attack reports or price moves alone are not a trigger; the reversal half has only secondary support, and a primary or named-wire Hormuz crude flow count after 2026-10-08 completes it; the stock-release clause did not fire, since the International Energy Agency decisions of 2026-10-07 and 2026-10-15 carry out the G7 and partners' 2026-10-02 release of up to 100 million barrels, and added volume beyond it, or a halt, is the change. Official crude flows at pre-war with inventories rebuilding and no third-quarter realized-margin advantage complete the failure condition for the crude branch; gas and LNG are judged separately.

strongest RSI in the upstream cohort (67.2) — hold above the 20-day (~$185.34) to stay constructive

this is a signal to watch, not a trade — a reclaim of the 20-day (~$373.15) would be the first sign of the safe-haven bid this week's tape didn't produce

Invalidation: n/a — continued weakness alongside a weakening dollar (UUP) is the non-confirmation already in the data

not a trend-hold candidate yet — wait for a base and a reclaim of the 50-day (~$36.18) before treating any bounce as more than a dead-cat pop

Invalidation: n/a — the condition to flip constructive is the 50-day reclaim above; a fresh 52-week low confirms the derate instead

RSI is a hair under overbought (69.7) — wait for a pullback to the 20-day (~$200.76) rather than chasing the extended print

Invalidation: loses the 50-day (~$185.74), turning the refining leg's leadership into a rollover

the -5.5% weekly pullback holds above the 20-day (~$121.96) — a normal pullback inside a strong-up trend, not a reversal

RSI 83 on 2.7x volume, +165% in a year — parabolic-chaser material, not trend-hold; reopen only on a first pullback that holds $36.99 (20-day) with volume drying up

reopen if it builds a multi-week base above the 20-day ($52.58) and resumes — a small refiner +53% in 30 days and +20% over its own 20-day is the gap, not the setup

Invalidation: n/a — not owned; the pass is wrong (and will be scored wrong) if that base forms and the resumption runs without us

the lane's quality large-cap; interest begins on the first pullback that HOLDS the 20-day ($272.00) after the Aug 4 print validates Q2 margins — at +15% above the 20-day, buying today buys the gap

Invalidation: a close below the 50-day ($261.52) breaks the momentum regime and the lane read resets
