Rates fired two of the September 6 risk rows; the tape never crossed its own lines

This note uses September 30 settled prices. FRED observations carry their own dates, and the last ten-year observation is September 28. The September 6 climate note (data as of September 4) is history. Since it was written, the Fed has raised rates, the ten-year has gone through 5%, and real yields have reached a level last seen in 2008. Its thresholds are scored below as written. None of its dated windows is re-applied.

The climate is an index base inside a rates shock. SPY, QQQ, RSP and IWM all classify as basing on September 30. SPY stays between its two September 6 lines. The two risk rows the note defined in rates and policy both fired between September 11 and 16, and no check scored them against the note. An EOD checkpoint did record the September 16 hike as news.

Status of every September 6 condition

Condition (09-06 wording) Status Date(s) Value and source
Advance confirmed: SPY > $779.37 and QQQ > $748.65, two sessions, VIX < 16 both Not fired — Highest SPY close since 09-08 was $773.50 (09-21). Highest QQQ close was $747.46 (09-22), while VIX was 14.21 (09-22). Daily regime snapshots and FRED VIXCLS.
Base deterioration: SPY < $756.86 and RSP < $217.12, two sessions Not fired One session only: 09-16 SPY closed at $754.05 on 09-16. It was $757.39 on 09-15 and $762.60 on 09-17. The RSP leg has held every session from 09-08 ($216.73) to 09-30 ($208.02), so the row now turns on SPY alone. Daily regime snapshots.
Longer-trend failure: SPY settled < $712.15 Not fired — SPY's lowest close was $754.05 (09-16). $712.15 was the 09-04 200-day average; the live average is now $719.62 (desk summaries, 09-30). A fixed moving-average level decays (call lessons, 09-22).
Risk 1a: CPI headline ≥0.4% or core ≥0.3% m/m, Sept 11 Fired (both legs, at threshold) 09-11 BLS, Consumer Price Index – August 2026 (read at bls.gov 2026-09-30): all items +0.4% m/m, +3.4% y/y; all items less food and energy +0.3% m/m, +2.4% y/y (2.5% in July). The FRED CPI file carries index levels only (332.813 July, 334.131 August) and no core series.
Risk 1b: rate increase at the Sept 16 FOMC Fired Decision 09-16; DFF steps 09-17 Federal Reserve FOMC statement, 2026-09-16 (federalreserve.gov, read 2026-09-30): the Committee raised the target range for the federal funds rate by 1/4 percentage point to 3-3/4 to 4 percent. FRED DFF: effective rate 3.63 (09-16), 3.88 (09-17).
Risk 2a: 10y ≥ 5.00%, two consecutive observations, Sept 8–18 Fired 09-15, 09-16 5.00 (09-15) and 5.01 (09-16), FRED DGS10. It printed 5.01 again on 09-18, but 4.94 on 09-17 broke the run.
Risk 2b: HY OAS ≥ 3.50, same window Not fired — The window's high was 2.76 (09-15). The latest is 3.02 (09-28), after the window. FRED BAMLH0A0HYM2.
Risk 3: official Hormuz transit restriction or Gulf LNG outage notice, through Sept 11 Hormuz leg not fired; LNG leg unchecked 09-09 The U.S. Maritime Administration reissued its standing warning on 09-09 as advisory 2026-011, which supersedes 2026-004 and runs to 2027-03-08. It says Iran continues to threaten and strike commercial vessels and advises standoff and avoiding hazard areas; it imposes no transit restriction or closure. No official Gulf LNG loading notice was checked (only the MARAD list was read). The CENTCOM tanker strikes reported by CNBC on 09-09 are a party statement carried by the press, which the row excludes.

Desk Review 2 reading. The desk-reviews brief fires Desk Review 2 on "a regime flip on the climate note's own criteria". The three price lines are those criteria, and none flipped. The risk rows said only that they "trigger review" and never named which review. The conservative reading: this climate read serves them, and Desk Review 2 is not triggered on climate criteria. The ambiguity is the user's to settle.

VIX (VIXCLS) 14.53 16.07 (09-28) The desk's VIX check reads 16.34 NORMAL on 09-30

Captured headlines attribute the rate legs to the August CPI (Bloomberg, 09-11: "Fed hike bets firmed"), the hike plus Chair Warsh's inflation comments (CNBC, 09-16), and strong manufacturing data (Semafor, 09-23). Those are press attributions, not proof. On 09-30, core PCE printed 3.0% year on year against a 3.3% consensus (CNBC), and traders trimmed October hike bets (Bloomberg). No FRED observation reflects that day yet.

Long horizon (desk summaries, 09-30). SPY and QQQ sit well above their 200-day averages with double-digit one-year gains, so their long trends are intact. RSP and IWM are each within about 1% of their 200-day averages ($205.58 and $276.05), with RSI near 29–30. Their long trends are genuinely under test, and those averages are the levels to watch. The regime classifier calls all four basing with compressed volatility. Its stated drawdowns are −1.96% for SPY, −6.62% for RSP and −8.92% for IWM.

Breadth and dispersion. The breadth gauge moved from "mixed" (reading 60, 09-04) to "deteriorating" (reading 20, 09-30). Across the classified universe, uptrends fell from 286 to 208 and collapses rose from 144 to 182, counted by code from the 09-04 and 09-30 snapshots. The universes differ slightly (1,146 vs 1,134 names, 37 unclassified on 09-04). Dispersion is still elevated, at 2.05 times its benchmark on the 13-week, 14-name sample, down from 2.58.

Leadership (rotation map, 09-30; counts of names above their 200-day by code from the desk summaries):

  • Memory and chip equipment lead the month. Equipment/test/metrology: 30-day median +13.74%, 13 of 13 up on the year, 10 of 13 above the 200-day. Memory: +11.1% over 30 days, 6 of 7 with history above the 200-day. Its seven-day median of −2.02% puts it at "fading". Micron reported after the 09-30 close and, per CNBC, beat with strong guidance. The settled tape does not reflect that yet.
  • Optics hold. Optical supply chain is +5.0% over 30 days with 18 of 27 above the 200-day. Co-packaged optics is +8.46%.
  • Power is flat. AI power is +0.5% over 30 days with 19 of 53 above the 200-day. Electricity is +0.36% with 18 of 53. Grid build-out is +2.72%.
  • Defense has broken down. Defense contractors are −10.23% over 30 days with 0 of 12 above the 200-day. Drone defense is −8.25% with 2 of 22.
  • The neocloud focus lane is split. Its 30-day median is flat (+0.08%), but the seven-day median is −11.77%. Two of 9 are above the 200-day and 5 of 9 are up on the year. The 09-29 brief found no fresh news item on any member (cause unknown).
  • Rate-sensitive groups trail. Alt managers (last of 123 lanes, −17.4%), financials (−8.33%), defensives (−8.3%) and consumer staples (−6.0%) all lag. Defensives failing to hold up fits a rate shock rather than flight to safety; that is inference.

Today's Lane Tape block does not exist yet, because the 09-30 brief is not built. One day-channel item from the rotation map: cloud SaaS closed 16 of 16 up (+1.93% median) on a lagging month. Its cause was not checked in this read.

What it means for the live campaigns (inference throughout)

  • ai-capex-digestion: Wider credit spreads and higher real yields support the financing-channel half of the counter-case. Micron's guide (press) cuts against near-term order weakness. The claim's own test is a filed guide-down. Keep the 10-30 review.
  • memory-supercycle: Rates challenge valuations, not the pricing claim. The review is due now by date (09-30) and by condition (a producer earnings release, Micron 09-30). Rates do not move it.
  • ai-power-bottleneck: Higher project financing costs are a marginal challenge to the build-out pace. The lane's month is flat. Keep the 10-06 review on the GE Vernova quarter.
  • ai-power-delivery: Rates have little direct bearing on supplier content per rack. Keep 10-06.
  • optical-supercycle: Rates have little direct bearing. The review is due now by date (09-30). The lane is still leading.
  • us-energy-dominance: The rates regime is neutral for the claim. Press reports flows recovering: Kpler near 80% of pre-war via Semafor (09-29), and CNBC on Hormuz crude exports back at pre-war levels (09-30). That challenges the "until flows recover" clause. It is press, not an official notice, so it is a lead for the 10-06 review, not a trigger.
  • energy-to-humanitarian-transmission: The claim names borrowing costs as a transmission leg, and the hike plus a 5.24% ten-year support that leg. Its "above 5% since 09-14" phrasing is wrong per DGS10 and needs correcting. The soft PCE read (press) is a mild challenge to the inflation channel. The next dated test, the 10-14 CPI, stands.

No campaign review needs to move earlier on rates alone. Memory and optical are already due.

The ten-year, specifically

What is measurable: the level, the speed, the split and the curve. DGS10 printed 4.80 on 09-08 and 5.24 on 09-28, a rise of 0.44 percentage points over 14 observations. 5.24 is the file's highest reading since 5.26 on 2007-06-12. The real yield (DFII10) moved from 2.43 to 2.90 on the same dates, a rise of 0.47 points. Subtracting one from the other gives the implied breakeven: 2.37 on 09-08 and 2.34 on 09-28. That means the rise is real yield, not inflation compensation. Breakeven is not itself a series on disk. The two-year rose more than the ten-year, from 4.39 to 4.92. The 10y-minus-2y spread fell from 0.41 (09-08) to 0.20 (09-21), then recovered to 0.37 (09-29). It flattened into the hike and partly steepened after it.

What is not measurable from the corpus: the split between policy path and term premium (no term-premium series on disk); whether the press attributions are causal; any observation after 09-28 (FRED lag); and where the yield goes next.

Not checked

  • Gulf LNG loading notices (09-08 to 09-11): not checked; only the MARAD advisory list was read (2026-09-30).
  • Core CPI y/y (+2.4%, BLS) and core PCE y/y (3.0%, CNBC 09-30) are different measures with different weights; the CPI figure is verified at the primary source and the PCE figure is press-reported.
  • FRED lag: no 09-29/09-30 observation for DGS10, DGS2, DFII10, high-yield spread or VIXCLS; dollar index through 09-25; NFCI through 09-18.
  • Term premium: no series on disk.
