← All campaignsAI optics: bandwidth becomes supplier earnings
Increasing optical content in AI networks will sustain supplier demand and margin gains through the next two reporting cycles, before added capacity or substitution removes the advantage.
- Why now
- Lumentum and Coherent provide current issuer evidence of demand and product progress; Coherent also reports expanding capacity, making supply response an immediate test.
- In scope
- Commercial optical links, lasers, modules, switching and related interconnect economics · Supplier capacity, qualifications, orders and margins
- Out of scope
- Assuming every AI supplier shares the same shortage · Pre-commercial technologies without customer revenue · Rack power conversion except as shared context
- Expected horizon
- 6–18 months; the shared test with the AI-spending counter-case runs through March 2027.
- What supports it
- Orders and optical revenue convert alongside stable or improving margins · Customer demand absorbs new capacity without broad price concessions
- What would break it
- Capacity relief or substitution causes order weakness and margin deterioration across two supplier reports · By March 2027, spending cuts reverse demand and margin gains at both core optical suppliers
Next review 2026-11-02 · Fabrinet's report, provider-estimated for November 2 (observed August 18), opens the two-report failure test; Coherent follows on November 4 after the close (company's investor-relations page) and Lumentum on November 5 (provider calendar). Read orders, delivered optical revenue, gross margin, pricing, capacity adds and any co-packaged-optics or substitution comment; keep management guidance separate from delivered results. Review earlier if an issuer confirms Thai flood disruption, or on a primary (issuer release, filing or call transcript) allocation, ramp, cancellation or capacity update. The capacity clause has already fired on secondary reports: Lumentum's CEO saying capacity is sold out through early 2029 (Bloomberg, relayed on X October 8-9) and that 2027 supply covers about 30% of demand (forum remarks transcribed on X, October 2), reviewed October 16 as guidance rather than delivered results; further restatements of the same claim are not a trigger.

A flag that holds above the 20-day average ($941.73 at the Oct 2 close) while RSI cools below 60, then a close at a new 52-week high
Invalidation: A close below the 50-day ($879.03 at the Oct 2 close), or fiscal Q1 2027 revenue below the $1.225B low end of guidance at the report expected around Nov 5
reopen only if it bases above its 200-day (~$42.55) for a full quarter AND revenue inflects — a collapsed 25x parabolic with sub-$100M revenue and operating losses is a lottery aftermath, not a trend
Invalidation: n/a — not owned; the pass is wrong if the substrate cycle produces a durable base and profitability
the steady one — EPS tripled over three quarters on a wire-flagged margin inflection and the tape barely flinched; buy the 20-day reclaim (~$66)
Invalidation: a finish under the 200-day (~$49) — the machine-vision recovery thesis is dead there
elite fundamentals (33% operating margin on $1.34B FY26 revenue) with the least-damaged tape in the sweep — already flagging under its 20-day; buy the reclaim (~$255.50)
Invalidation: a finish under the 200-day (~$160) — until then pullbacks are digestion in an intact uptrend
the fundamentals are the best in the sweep (net income nearly quadrupled in two quarters) but the tape trades below its 200-day — watch for the reclaim of the ~$55.60 cluster (50-day, 200-day, one-year VWAP)
Invalidation: gas strip rolling over while price stays below the 200-day through the October print
the sleeper — record Q1, raised full-year guidance to include the Distributed Power acquisition, and a 300–500MW/yr power-generation growth outlook through 2030; buy the 50-day reclaim (~$70)
Invalidation: a finish under $57.50 (top of the prior value area) says the datacenter-power re-rate failed
defense photonics inflected to GAAP profit on +55% revenue with record defense product sales — buy the reclaim of $65.50 (the one-year point of control)
Invalidation: a finish under the ~$51 cluster (200-day and one-year VWAP), or defense revenue momentum stalling at the next print
wire-flagged inflection but already a 4.5x over the year and −16% this week on no news we can find — needs the flag to hold; interest returns above the 20-day (~$91)
Invalidation: a finish under the one-year VWAP (~$50.66) unwinds the entire re-rate
the −21% week has no company event behind it — Q1 revenue rose 87% with a 21% EPS beat and the wire flagged the margin inflection; buy the 50-day reclaim (~$383), with the July 28 print as the catalyst
Invalidation: a finish under the 200-day (~$270), or the July 28 print showing the 'lumpy, concentrated among large customers' risk arriving early
AI power: rack and chip conversion
Rising datacenter power density will increase the commercial content of rack-to-chip conversion and cooling suppliers, provided design wins become revenue without eroding margins.
- Why now
- MPS describes shipping power modules and contributions from optical-module and rack networking power solutions. This provides a commercial starting point beyond a generic efficiency narrative.
- In scope
- Rack, board and die conversion and associated thermal management · Named designs, customer qualification, content and revenue conversion
- Out of scope
- Generation, utility power prices and grid equipment · Assuming every topology or supplier wins · Treating a networking-power sale as a CPU shortage
- Expected horizon
- 6–24 months; test socket conversion and margins at the next two quarterly reports.
- What supports it
- Named designs enter shipment and contribute to supplier revenue · Product mix supports margins as volumes grow
- What would break it
- Named design wins are removed or fail to enter commercial shipment · Relevant revenue grows only through price concessions that erode margins across two reports
Next review 2026-10-30 · Read the first of the two quarterly reports the horizon names. Vicor (scheduled 2026-10-20): product revenue against royalties, whether the September 21 raise and the relayed September 30 raise appear in filed results, and margins. Vertiv (provider estimate 2026-10-28, observed October 15; the October 21 date is superseded): whether the $14B sales outlook holds, with acquired revenue separated from organic content. Monolithic Power (scheduled 2026-10-29, after the close): third-quarter revenue against the $1.14–1.16B guide, Enterprise Data mix and operating margin. Navitas (provider estimate 2026-11-03; previously November 2) and Eaton (2026-11-03) roll into the following check. Earlier on a named design-out, a licence termination or dispute, or a guidance cut. The licence clause was checked on October 16 and did not fire: the only dispute on record is Vicor's own patent complaint, which the US International Trade Commission opened as an investigation (October 12 per the company's press-room listing; the release is not yet read); the company's own enforcement filing is not a trigger. Promote only on reported product revenue with stable or rising margins; royalties alone keep the case bounded.

A pullback that holds above the 200-day average ($286.14 at the Oct 9 close) while RSI cools below 55, then a settled close above $300.40, the October 6 close on the Google agreement
Invalidation: A settled close below the 200-day average ($286.14 at the Oct 9 close), or a third-quarter report (expected around Nov 9, provider date) that does not confirm the Google agreement's terms
holds the 200-day average at $188.51
Invalidation: a weekly close below $188.51
reclaims its 200-day average at $259.70 with RSI back above 45
Invalidation: a weekly close more than 5% below the 200-day
