Keep a narrow monitoring campaign with a near-term evidence event; remove the broad speculative defense basket.
Keep a narrow monitoring campaign with a near-term evidence event; remove the broad speculative defense basket. Scope reviewed on September 6; source dates remain original. This is a research-priority and evidence-boundary review, not an entry call or a fresh historical performance grade.

Case at review: Drone and counter-UAS procurement will improve selected suppliers’ operating economics if funded orders convert to deliveries and margins faster than dilution and execution costs.
The existing review identifies procurement conversion as the missing proof. AeroVironment has a scheduled September 9 earnings release that can advance that review.
Horizon: 6–18 months; first review after the scheduled September 9 results.
Failure conditions: Stop-work, cancellation or execution costs prevent conversion · Dilution and acquisition costs overwhelm per-share operating progress across two reports
- Review actual AV results after the scheduled September 9 release; earlier on a material funded award, cancellation or stop-work decision.
Drone defense: AeroVironment's fiscal Q1 2027 print advances funded orders, not conversion
Campaign review · 2026-09-10 · data as of 2026-09-10
EOD campaign checkpoint 2026-09-10: drone-defense review due on the AV September 9 print (book-blind Opus review, coordinator-adjudicated)
Thesis intact. AeroVironment's fiscal Q1 2027 print landed on schedule and the desk's news pull caught it: funded backlog up 37% to $1.5B, total backlog $2.8B, book-to-bill 1.4, a raised fiscal 2027 revenue outlook with earnings guidance maintained (Benzinga summary of the release, September 10). That moves the front half of the case: funded orders are accumulating, and the source calls the $1.5B funded. It does not move the half the campaign says is the missing proof. No reported revenue figure, segment operating margin or share count for the quarter is on record, and the same summary notes declines in some segments. The last filed authority is still fiscal 2026 (the 10-K filed June 29): revenue $1.977B and a GAAP operating loss of $311.0M, so profitable deliveries remains an unfiled claim. The tape gave the print exactly one day: AVAV +4.45% to $147.07 on 5.93x average volume, still -0.1% over seven days and -24.97% over thirty, RSI 43.5, thirty percent below its 200-day (September 10 close). The lane did not follow: the drone-defense group's median move was -0.55% with 9 of 21 up, and the theme sits in the rotation outflow list at -17.68% relative strength over thirty days. Neither failure condition tripped: no stop-work or cancellation is on record, and the two-report dilution test cannot run without this quarter's per-share operating figures.

- Obtain a primary source for the fiscal Q1 2027 results (company release or 10-Q); the only post-print item on record is one secondary summary, and reported revenue, segment operating margin and diluted share count are all missing.
- When the fiscal Q1 2027 filing lands, reconcile the $1.5B funded backlog, $2.8B total backlog and 1.4 book-to-bill against filed figures, and record whether operating margin improved off the fiscal 2026 operating loss of $311.0M.
- Establish whether the nearly $500M U.S. Army LOCUST counter-drone laser award (a September 2 social capture using the words 'selected for') is funded, and whether it already sits inside the $1.5B funded backlog; it has no primary receipt.
- Treat the +138% EPS surprise as consensus-relative until the filing reconciles it; the desk's AVAV consensus tracking has been disputed against EDGAR twice in the last four quarters.
- Read KTOS and RCAT for a peer conversion signal; neither followed AVAV on September 10 (KTOS +0.51%, RCAT -0.62%).
AeroVironment's 10-Q confirms $1.46B funded backlog; conversion split, dilution test holds for now
Campaign review · 2026-09-23 · data as of 2026-09-23
The 09-24 review condition fired: the fiscal Q1 2027 10-Q is on record (filed 09-10)
Thesis intact, conversion only partly proven. The 10-Q filed September 10 (quarter ended August 1) confirms the order leg: funded backlog of $1,457.8M, up from $1,183.0M at April 30, plus $1,366.5M unfunded; the filing states no total backlog or book-to-bill, so the $2.8B and 1.4 from the September 10 secondary summary remain unfiled. Revenue was $480.5M against $454.7M a year earlier, a 6% rise by the filing's own figure, and the GAAP loss from operations narrowed to $10.9M from $69.3M, against a fiscal 2026 operating loss of $311.0M in the 10-K filed June 29. Diluted weighted shares were 49.82M versus 46.88M a year earlier and 49.09M for fiscal 2026; diluted loss per share was $0.10 versus $1.44, so dilution did not overwhelm per-share progress in this first of two reports. The quality is mixed: most of the GAAP gain came from lower depreciation and amortization ($56.0M versus $90.3M) and acquisition expenses ($2.1M versus $23.7M), while total segment adjusted EBITDA slipped to $53.4M from $56.6M. Autonomous Systems grew revenue 21% and segment adjusted EBITDA 18% to $62.3M, but Switchblade product revenue fell $56.9M on what the filing calls order delays, and Space, Cyber and Directed Energy swung to an $8.9M segment adjusted EBITDA loss. No stop-work or cancellation on AeroVironment or Red Cat is on record since September 10; Kratos news was last pulled August 15, so it is unchecked. The LOCUST laser award, $464.8M per a social capture of the company's post, is unconfirmed as funded. The desk's September 23 summaries put AVAV 24% below its 200-day average and down 47.78% over a year; KTOS and RCAT sit 34.1% and 40.1% below theirs, context rather than proof.

Failure conditions: Stop-work, cancellation or execution costs prevent conversion · Dilution and acquisition costs overwhelm per-share operating progress across two reports
- Run the second leg of the two-report dilution test on the fiscal Q2 2027 10-Q: diluted weighted shares, GAAP operating income, and segment adjusted EBITDA by segment, and check whether the GAAP operating improvement holds without further amortization and acquisition-cost relief.
- Track the Switchblade order delays ($56.9M product revenue decline in fiscal Q1 2027): record whether fiscal Q2 shows recovery, further delay, or any stop-work or cancellation language.
- Obtain a primary receipt (company release or Defense Department contract announcement) for the $464.8M LOCUST E-HEL award, establishing funded amount versus ceiling, and check whether fiscal Q2 funded backlog reflects it.
- Refresh Kratos news (last pulled August 15) and read KTOS (earnings November 3 per calendar) and RCAT (November 5 or 12, two dates on file) prints for funded-order conversion and any stop-work or cancellation.
