September CPI test: energy accelerated, food at home fell — the food link is undecided
Campaign review · 2026-10-14 · data as of 2026-10-14
EOD campaign checkpoint 2026-10-14: the dated September CPI test, read from the BLS primary release (USDL-26-1574), neither promotes nor fails the food link.
The September CPI, released October 14, 2026, left the food test undecided. Energy did not fade: the energy index rose 5.2% in September after 2.1% in August (seasonally adjusted) and stands 20.4% above a year earlier (unadjusted), with gasoline up 34.2% and fuel oil up 74.2% on the year. Food at home fell 0.1%, after 0.0% in August and a 0.1% decline in July, and is up 1.8% on the year. The promote branch needed a positive food-at-home month; the fail branch needed decelerating energy. Neither happened. The fuel link is confirmed and strengthening; the food link is absent for a third straight month against a larger energy shock. The October CPI, scheduled for November 10, decides it.

Case at review: The Saudi phase of the Iran war transmits to Western households through refining, freight and interest rates — not, so far, through grain and fertilizer. Reviewed on the 2026-09-18 settled close: the distillate and shipping links are fully priced (US retail diesel a record $5.901/gal on 2026-09-08 with crude ~$28/bbl below its 2022 level; ULSD crack $108.02/bbl intraday 2026-09-03; Hormuz transits 4 vessels on 2026-09-14 against a pre-war ~125/day; war-risk cover quoted at 40x normal; 2026 tanker orders more than twice 2025's count, ~$20bn, per Semafor 2026-09-18) while the food link is not (August CPI, released 2026-09-11: food at home 0.0% m/m and +2.2% y/y, decelerating from 2.7%, against energy +16.3% y/y and fuel oil +52.0% y/y; the agriculture fund closed 2026-09-18 at $28.15, RSI 41.4, -2.7% on the week and 0.3% under its 50-day). The testable claim is that hardship in the US and Europe arrives this cycle as fuel, freight and borrowing costs — the Fed hiked 25bp on 2026-09-16, its first hike since 2023, with the 10-year Treasury yield at or above 5% on 2026-09-15, 2026-09-16 and 2026-09-18 and on every observation since 2026-09-23 (5.24% on 2026-09-28, the latest) — and that the food-price link completes only if the September CPI (released 2026-10-14) or a cold European winter against 68.7% storage (2026-09-16) forces it.
The war moved onto Saudi soil in the week of 2026-09-14: an Iran-backed Iraqi militia drone strike shut the roughly 750-mile East-West pipeline that bypasses Hormuz (CNBC, 2026-09-13/14), Aramco suspended Yanbu loadings and cancelled cargoes as US crude topped $105 (CNBC and Yahoo Finance, 2026-09-15), and Riyadh answered by rerouting exports through Hormuz with prompt ship-to-ship sales, which took crude back toward $100 by 2026-09-17 (Bloomberg and MarketWatch, 2026-09-17). The 2026-09-18 close shows the market's verdict: crude's fund -0.7% on the week at $153.82 (still +17.5% on 30 days), oil services down hard (Schlumberger -8.81%, Halliburton -6.14%), and refiners and tankers vertical (MPC RSI 83.0, CVI 81.4, VLO 80.1, DHT 77.2, FRO 73.9) — a routing and refining problem, not a barrel shortage. The May 2026 frames written for a Hormuz-only war (oil-200-scenario, food-security-cascade, crypto-geopolitics) are history; this is their successor for the energy-to-hardship chain, and its weakest link has a dated test on 2026-10-14.
Horizon: Weeks to two quarters. Freight and insurance costs land on Western shelves with a one-to-two-quarter lag, so the case is graded through the 2026-27 northern winter and closed or promoted by the March 2027 CPI cycle.
Failure conditions: The September (2026-10-14) and October CPI prints leave food at home flat-to-negative while energy decelerates — the chain stops at freight and the food link never completes · Saudi restores East-West pipeline flows and Hormuz transits normalize, taking cracks and tanker rates back toward pre-September levels: refiner RSI back under 50 and FRO, DHT, INSW and STNG losing their 50-day averages · EU storage reaches or closely approaches the 90% target by 2026-12-01 on a mild winter and TTF falls back below the January 2023 level · The hardship link stays undocumented into Q1 2027 — no dated European or US household energy-bill, relief or food-assistance receipt appears — in which case the humanitarian framing was the wrong lens and the case is an energy-to-freight-to-rates case only
- Review-earlier triggers UNCHECKED, not 'not fired': official EU gas storage / TTF break, Aramco or operator notice of full East-West pipeline capacity, official Hormuz transit count, first dated EU or US household-energy relief measure. Missing data: Gas Infrastructure Europe storage and TTF prints after 2026-09-17.
- Failure condition 3 (EU storage near 90% by 2026-12-01 and TTF below its January 2023 level) UNCHECKED: no storage or TTF receipt after 2026-09-17.
- Failure condition 2 (refiners cool, tankers lose their 50-day averages) CHECKED on the 2026-10-14 close and not met (refiner RSIs 75.7-80; tankers 5.1%-20.2% over their 50-day).
- If food at home is flat-to-negative again in October while energy stays elevated, the 'decelerating energy' qualifier in the fail branch no longer protects the food link: that is a restatement of the case for the user, not a desk rewrite.

DBA back over its 50-day with RSI above 50 (Sept 18 close $28.15, RSI 41.4, 0.3% under the 50-day), confirmed by a positive food-at-home month in the September CPI on Oct 14
Invalidation: DBA loses its 200-day (4.1% below Friday's close) or the Oct 14 print leaves food at home flat-to-negative again
