Breadth Turns Mixed, and Two Triggers Get Declined

Market Signal

Breadth left broad-strength for mixed on a day the AI complex sold off and defensives bid; both fresh entry triggers were verified real and declined on conditions.

Monday's tape did something the previous week's cooldown had not: it stopped being uniform. The breadth gauge moved off broad-strength to mixed, and the lane medians show why it is a split rather than a slide. Memory closed 11 of 11 red at a −5.8% median, quantum 13 of 13 red at −6.1%, and the optical supply chain −4.5% on the day for −17.5% on the week. Against that, consumer staples closed +1.2% with nothing red at all, and defensives and travel both added roughly a point. Money did not leave; it moved.

Two entry triggers lit on the same session, and both are real on the tape. Micron crossed above its $888.26 level, closing at $910.43. Silver miners crossed $86.39 long ago and closed at $100.37. Neither was taken.

Micron met its trigger by falling into it. The name is −5.83% on the day and −10.04% on the week, trend weak-down at RSI 48.5, and it did not fall alone — the entire memory lane closed red. A level reached from above during a lane-wide flush is a different event from a level reclaimed from below, and only the second one is an entry. The long trend is not in question: Micron still sits 58.5% above its 200-day. The thesis survives; the timing does not, two sessions ahead of Nvidia's August 26 report.

Silver miners have the opposite problem. The trend is genuine — +82.56% over the year, 13.9% above the 200-day — but price sits 16% above the trigger after a 33.05% run in thirty days, with RSI at 72.9 and gold miners beside it at 75.8. That is a chase, not a break. Worth noting underneath it: silver itself still trades 3.8% below its own 200-day despite an 77.61% year, which is a round trip rather than a trend.

The gold/silver ratio gauge also left reflation-ratio-falling for neutral, and three names — gold miners, high-yield credit and silver miners — rose to three bells on the convergence board. Three is below the line that earns its own work, so they are noted and left.

What to watch: Nvidia reports after the close on August 26 into a complex that spent Monday de-risking. If breadth is going to resolve back to broad-strength, that print is the most likely place it happens — and if it does not, the defensive bid stops looking like rotation and starts looking like positioning.
