1. The Read
Monday looked like a selloff and wasn't one. The S&P closed down 0.29% and the Dow actually finished up 0.27%; small caps gave back 0.66%. Underneath, 782 names fell against 345 that rose, with a median move of −0.9%. Volatility sat at 15.85, up 4.8% and still in the calm band, and every leg of the bond complex closed green — long Treasuries +0.62%, investment grade +0.25%, high yield +0.11%. Orderly credit under a flat index is the signature of money moving, not money leaving.
It moved out of one theme with real force. Memory closed 11 red out of 11, a −5.8% median. Quantum computing closed 13 of 13 red at −6.1%. The optical supply chain fell 4.5% on the day for −17.5% on the week, the worst week of any lane on the board, and the neocloud stack went 10 for 10 red. Micron fell 5.83%, SanDisk 6.45%, Seagate 6.51%, Western Digital 5.24% — and Samsung had already fallen 8.7% in Seoul before New York opened, which is the sequencing worth keeping: the selling started in Asia and arrived here. Chips overall fell 2.43%, software 1.78%. Nvidia itself was comparatively mild at −2.91%.
Two things happened over the weekend that the desk should have been carrying into Monday and wasn't. On Saturday the United States' 50% tariffs on a broad range of Canadian goods took effect — applying even to CUSMA-compliant goods, with no expiry — after trade talks collapsed; Prime Minister Carney said his country is "at war" with the US and set matching counter-tariffs on roughly $28 billion of American goods for September 8. On Sunday, Treasury Secretary Bessent promised an "economic D-Day" ahead of expected Iran sanctions, against a Strait of Hormuz that has been effectively closed since late February and where three vessels belonging to Abu Dhabi's state oil company were attacked inside 48 hours this month. Whether either explains a memory selloff is not established and this desk will not pretend otherwise — but a tariff wall going up around the most import-dependent supply chain in the market, on the weekend Asian tech opened lower, is not a coincidence worth ignoring either.
The bond market has already made up its mind about that mix. Thirty-year Treasury yields reached 5.31%, the highest since 2007, on a combination of sticky inflation, heavy long-dated issuance and fading demand — enough that the Treasury has at least doubled its long-bond buybacks from $2 billion to $4 billion, the move this desk captured on August 19. The front end has not followed: two-year paper sits at 4.24% against a ten-year at 4.74%, a curve of +0.46%, with the effective funds rate at 3.63% and the crowd putting a September hold at 66%. A long end selling off while the short end holds is not a rate-cut story or a growth story. It is a term-premium story, and it is the cleanest read available on what the market thinks American fiscal and geopolitical risk is now worth.
Which is why the other half of the tape matters. Gold rose 0.79% on the day and 5.24% on the week, with the miners up 12.73% on the week and 37.63% over thirty days; oil is up 74.53% over the trailing year and sits 26.4% above its 200-day. Bitcoin gained 2.62% on the day and 23.36% on the week. But those two are not the same trade and should not be read as one. Gold is up 37.72% on the year and above its 200-day — a trend. Bitcoin is up 23.36% this week and down 26.28% over the year, with the largest corporate holder of it down 64.27% on the year and still 14.4% below its own 200-day. One of these is a durable bid; the other is a violent bounce inside a broken year, and RSI 83 is not where that distinction gets resolved.
Earnings were a footnote by comparison, and both were Chinese. PDD beat, earning $19.33 against $18.35 expected, and fell 1.48% anyway. XPeng missed badly — $1.29 lost against a $0.76 estimate — and fell 8.53%.
Watch Wednesday: Nvidia reports after the close into a complex that spent Monday de-risking ahead of it, with the crowd still pricing a 72% chance it ends the year as the largest company in the world. Marvell and IREN follow Thursday. And watch September 8, when Canada's counter-tariffs land.
What happened last week
Last week was a broad cooldown that mostly wasn't a breakdown: the benchmark lost roughly a dozen RSI points while staying comfortably above its 200-day, and the deep pullbacks in semis and optical sat on trailing years still up double and triple digits. The genuine casualties were narrower — the whole Treasury and credit complex death-crossed, utilities broke down, and Walmart took a 9.15% hit on its print. Two China names then reversed their print-day reactions inside three sessions, which was the week's cleanest lesson: a one-day reaction to earnings is a poll, not a verdict.
What to watch this week
Wednesday is the week. Nvidia after the close, alongside CrowdStrike, Salesforce, Synopsys, Veeva, HP and Okta — much the heaviest evening of the week. Tuesday is Intuit and Zoom; Thursday brings Marvell, Workday, Affirm and IREN, the last a useful read on whether the neocloud damage is operational or positioning. Behind all of it: the September 8 Canadian counter-tariffs, and whatever the promised Iran sanctions actually contain.

3. Three Things
- The long end repriced; the front end didn't. Thirty-year yields reached their highest since 2007 while two-year paper sits at 4.24% and the crowd puts a September hold at 66%. That shape is not a growth scare or a rate-cut bet — it is the market marking up what long-dated American risk costs.
- One theme was taken apart while the index sat still. Memory closed 11 of 11 red, quantum 13 of 13, optical −17.5% on the week — and the S&P still only lost 0.29% with the Dow up 0.27% and every leg of credit green.
- Gold is a trend; bitcoin is a bounce. They rose together this week and they are not the same asset. Gold: +37.72% on the year, above its 200-day. Bitcoin: +23.36% on the week, −26.28% on the year, with its largest corporate holder down 64.27% and below its own 200-day.
4. Big Picture
Act 1 — A tariff wall went up over the weekend. The United States' 50% tariffs on a broad range of Canadian goods took effect Saturday, applying even to CUSMA-compliant goods and carrying no expiry, after trade talks collapsed. Canada has set matching counter-tariffs on roughly $28 billion of American goods for September 8, and its Prime Minister described the relationship as being "at war." This is the largest single change to North American trade terms in this cycle, and it landed on a weekend.
Act 2 — The energy chokepoint stayed shut. The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since late February; three vessels belonging to Abu Dhabi's state oil company were attacked inside 48 hours this month, and on Sunday the Treasury Secretary promised an "economic D-Day" ahead of expected Iran sanctions. Oil is up 74.53% over the trailing year and sits 26.4% above its 200-day. Energy equities are up 46.22% on the year at RSI 67.3. This is not a tail risk being priced; it is a condition being lived in.
Act 3 — The bond market returned its verdict. Long Treasuries closed green on the day and remain down 4.88% on the year and 4.6% below their 200-day, with the thirty-year at its highest yield since 2007 and the Treasury doubling its long-bond buybacks to at least $4 billion. Add a curve of +0.46% and an effective funds rate of 3.63%, and the message is consistent: the front end trusts the Fed, the long end is charging more for duration, and hard assets are being bid against both.
5. Market Vibe
Calm on the surface, violent underneath. Volatility at 15.85 is complacency, not relief; credit did not flinch; and the index barely moved. But 782 names fell against 345, one entire supply chain lost a fifth of its value in a week, and the assets people buy when they distrust paper all went up together. A tape that looks quiet and trades like this is repricing something it has not said out loud yet.
6. Key Signals
- Breadth left broad-strength for mixed — the first gauge transition in this stretch, and the lane medians confirm it rather than merely registering it.
- The gold/silver ratio gauge left reflation-ratio-falling for neutral, alongside gold at RSI 72.5 and the miners at 75.8.
- Two entry triggers lit and both were declined. Micron crossed $888.26 by falling into it on a day its lane closed 11 of 11 red; silver miners sit 16% above their $86.39 trigger after a 33.05% month. Trigger met is not condition met, and both passes are on the record with their reasons.
- Convergence rose to three bells on gold miners, high-yield credit and silver miners — below the four-bell line that earns its own work, so noted and left.

7. Front Page
- Nvidia reports Wednesday after the close into a complex that spent Monday de-risking ahead of it — the single most consequential print of the quarter for this tape.
- Canada's counter-tariffs land September 8, a dated, known catalyst with two weeks of warning.
- The thirty-year is at its highest yield since 2007, and the Treasury is buying back its own long bonds to absorb it.
- SanDisk did not report despite sitting on the calendar to do so; the confirmed schedule is now empty until November. It fell 6.45% anyway, on lane pressure rather than company news.

IONQ, RGTI, QBTS, QUBT, INFQ, ARQQ, XNDU, HQ, LAES — The quantum bucket gave back Friday's uncatalysed pop almost exactly: IonQ −8.47%, Rigetti −8.60%, D-Wave −8.34%, Quantum Computing Inc −7.62%, Infleqtion −7.58%. Nine names moving together in both directions inside three sessions is a crowd, not nine theses. Excluded on business quality, not on drawdown.
The desk's takes cover 15 of 24 names; the rest show the mechanical tape state. 1 authored take matched no row (IONQ, RGTI, QBTS, QUBT, INFQ, ARQQ, XNDU, HQ, LAES) — kept in the chapter text above.
9. Sector Scorecard
Semiconductors — Down 2.43% on the day, 7.95% on the week, RSI 41.7 — yet still 86.61% up on the trailing year and 16.8% above the 200-day. The horizons disagree loudly here.
Utilities — Up 1.05% on the day but still down 6.63% over 30 days and below its 200-day. A bounce inside a broken lane, not a recovery.
Credit and Treasuries — Every leg green on the day: long Treasuries +0.62%, intermediates +0.20%, investment grade +0.25%, high yield +0.11%. Orderly credit is what separates a positioning flush from a break, and it stayed orderly. Zoom out and it is the opposite picture: the thirty-year yield has reached its highest since 2007, long Treasuries are down 4.88% on the year and 4.6% below their 200-day. A calm day inside a broken year.
Gold and hard assets — The clearest trend on the board. Gold +5.24% on the week and +37.72% on the year, above its 200-day; the miners +12.73% on the week and +37.63% over thirty days, though RSI 75.8 says that entry has run. Oil sits +74.53% over the year and 26.4% above its 200-day with the Strait of Hormuz still closed. Silver is the odd one: +77.61% on the year yet still 3.8% BELOW its 200-day — a round trip, not a trend.
ETF tape · 42 funds
The desk's curated ETF read — one fund per lane it tracks, not every fund on the watchlists — grouped by what the fund is exposed to, and where each closed on the issue date. The big number and the tile's shade are that session's move (1D); 7D and 30D are the trailing windows behind it, and RSI is the 14-day reading (above 70 is stretched, below 30 washed out). Shades near flat stay gray — a ±0.25% day is not a color.

10. The Wild & Whacky
- A 2-for-1 split briefly read as a 52.7% crash. IES Holdings split on Monday; until the corporate action was confirmed and the series rescaled, the tape showed the stock down 52.7% on the day. Corrected, it fell 5.37%. The other half of that story is in the desk's own defect ledger, because a second name showed the same signature and its split still is not confirmed by any provider — so its tape is being held as suspect rather than published as a return.
- A beat that got sold and a miss that got sold. PDD beat by 5.34% and lost 1.48%; XPeng missed by 68.63% and lost 8.53%. On Monday the direction of the surprise didn't matter much — only that you were Chinese and listed here.
- Samsung fell 8.7% in Seoul before New York opened, and then eleven US memory names fell in sympathy. The lane's worst day was already decided while most of the desk was asleep.
- SanDisk didn't report. It was on the calendar to print Monday, the placeholder is still sitting in the system, and the confirmed schedule now has nothing until November. The stock fell 6.45% anyway — for lane reasons, not company ones.
11. What I'd Tell a Friend
Nothing broke on Monday. One theme got taken apart while the index sat still and credit stayed calm — money moving, not money leaving. But the week's real story isn't in equities at all. Tariffs went up around the border on Saturday, an Iran sanctions package was promised on Sunday, the Strait of Hormuz has been shut since February, and the thirty-year Treasury just printed its highest yield since 2007. That is a market repricing what American fiscal and geopolitical risk costs, and it shows up as gold and oil bid, the long end sold, and the front end unmoved.
So: own the trend, not the sympathy trade. Gold is up 37.72% on the year and above its 200-day — that is a trend, even if the miners at RSI 75.8 are a poor entry today. Bitcoin is up 23.36% in a week and down 26.28% on the year; that is a bounce wearing a trend's clothing, and the difference will matter more than this week's candle does.
Falling into a level is not the same as basing at one. Micron hit its trigger by dropping into it on a day its entire lane closed red — the worst reason to buy a good name. Both of this week's triggers were passed for that kind of reason, and both are still worth owning later at a better price.
The one thing to watch: Wednesday after the close — and then September 8.
12. Paper Trade Report Card
The desk's paper books were checked against Monday's settled close: 161 positions reviewed — 5 sells, 4 watch, 152 hold. The sells were ordinary stop discipline rather than a view: two books stopped out of the same name at −22.4%, a leveraged semiconductor position hit a hard −20% stop, a −16% stop closed a megacap, and one momentum book exited on trend death rather than price ("no strength, no position"). The autotrade book produced no signals at all this cycle and transacted nothing. Nothing here was driven by the day's headlines; the stops were where they already were.

13. Active Perspectives
Twenty-eight perspectives are live. The one worth naming today is the crypto-and-geopolitics thesis, which was closed with an explicit reopen condition: bitcoin above $80,000 with RSI over 65 sustained, and a fresh geopolitical catalyst confirmed by a bid in the first 24 hours. As of Monday's close bitcoin is at $78,747.51 with RSI 83 — the momentum leg is met, the price leg is 1.6% away, and the catalyst leg is arguable but unconfirmed. It is not reopened. It is closer than it has been, and it is the one dormant thesis this week's tape is actively arguing with.
The memory thesis is the other one under live pressure: the lane closed 11 of 11 red and the entry trigger it named was reached from above rather than below, which is a condition the thesis did not anticipate.

Not applicable — no full scan ran today. This is the daily edition written on Friday's corpus; the whole-desk dashboard belongs to the end-of-week run.
29 required scans have no dated artifact.
15. Scan Summary
The tape reads that did run: the monster scan covered 440 qualifying names — 29 parabolic, 67 monster, 52 strong, 195 secular and 97 steady climbers — and its parabolic tier is now almost entirely biotech, with Moderna 182% above its 200-day, Amylyx 141%, 10x Genomics 138%, Twist 135% and AbCellera 122%. The washout scan returned 63 turns, five with secular pedigree and ten already overbought; Netflix, Tesla, IBM, silver and PDD are all in it, which is to say the turn candidates this week are mostly names with broken years rather than fresh leadership.
Recorded coverage: 2 required scans complete, 29 without a dated artifact. The complete receipt is under All Scans below.

A desk call is an authored stance from a published report; entry and invalidation conditions are human-read, and the full ledger lives at /calls.
30d vs SPY is the raw name-vs-SPY move since the call — for trim/sell calls a NEGATIVE number means the call worked (the name fell after it).

𝕏@KobeissiLetter — The Kobeissi Letter — South Korea's chip trade surplus hit a record ~$35B in June, more than tripling in 12 months $MU $SNDK $EWY · link- A national trade-balance print is a hard confirmation of the memory tightness thesis from outside the companies' own reporting: on the stated June figure, chips carry roughly $35B of surplus against ~$1B for everything else South Korea sells. That is a country whose entire external surplus is one industry. Note the wi…
𝕏@SemiAnalysis_ — SemiAnalysis — 3D NAND is switching word lines from tungsten to molybdenum above ~300 layers $MU $SNDK $AMAT $LRCX · link- A physics-down bottleneck under the memory supercycle: layer-stacking is the only scaling axis left for 3D NAND, and past roughly 300 layers the tungsten wiring itself becomes the limit on resistance and fluorine chemistry. A materials switch at that layer of the stack is a deposition-equipment and precursor story bef…
𝕏@IPONewsroom_ — IPO Newsroom — Anthropic bankers floated a $100B+ raise at a $2T valuation, per NYT (early discussions) $MSFT $NVDA · link- Fact strength matters here: this is a report of early banker conversations, not a filing, and the post says so itself. Taken at the stated size it would be the largest offering ever attempted and a liquidity event large enough to reprice the AI private-mark complex and pull capital out of listed names to fund allocati…
𝕏michaelsikand — Unitree pops +629% on its China listing $TER $ISRG · link- The robotics lane's speculative temperature in one number: a +629% listing-day pop for the humanoid-robot maker on China's mainland market. A sentiment datapoint for the physical-AI thesis, not a fundamentals one.
𝕏zephyr_z9 — Marvell hands Google a warrant for ~6.7% of the company, vesting on custom-chip revenue $MRVL $GOOGL · link- The hyperscaler-equity-for-order-book structure arrives at Marvell: Google gets paid in upside for routing custom-silicon revenue through MRVL until FY2033. Three separate captures surfaced it today — a real disclosed mechanism that changes how the custom-ASIC lane's wins should be valued, not a rumor.
𝕏AnthropicAI (via citrini) — Anthropic — Claude designs novel protein binders against 14 of 15 targets $TWST $MRNA · link- Weeks of expert binder design compressed to an autonomous run, on the same day the first mRNA cancer vaccine cleared Phase 3 — the AI-times-biology thread now has datapoints at both ends of the pipeline (design and clinic). Via citrini's TWST thread.
𝕏@ChurchillWw — Transmission is the binding constraint on new generation — Pepco's rights-of-way rebuild is the template · link- The grid-buildout lane's mechanism in one post: you cannot add generation faster than the wires that carry it, and reusing existing corridors (a 230 kV rebuild plus a new 500 kV circuit in the same right-of-way) is how the constraint gets relaxed without a decade of siting fights.
𝕏@KobeissiLetter — US margin debt fell $85B in July to $1.42T — the largest monthly drop on record $SPY · link- The leverage read flips: June's record $1.50T (+49% y/y) was the peak; July's -$85B is the biggest monthly deleveraging ever, bigger than January 2022's. Deleveraging into a rout is how corrections stay corrections — a datapoint for the four-leg monitor, not a bull or bear verdict.
𝕏@IPONewsroom_ — Anthropic's pre-IPO credit facility is set to top its $10B target — lead banks asked for ~$1.25B each · link- The AI-capex bond wave, one deal at a time: a $10B+ bank facility ahead of a fall IPO is the same savings pool the Treasury is competing for. Read next to the 30-year at 5.3% and the AI-issuance question the desk is running down.
