1. The Read
Treasury yields climbed to their highest since 2007 on Thursday, September 24, and the S&P 500 fund slipped just 0.08% while the average stock kept leaking: 646 of 1,117 tracked names fell, and the real moves came in whole lanes, with genomics tools and quantum up and uranium, memory and disk storage down.
Rates: the shock kept going, credit still hasn't flinched
The 10-year closed September 23 at 5.11% (FRED), and Kobeissi reported it above 5.20% during Thursday's session, the first time in 19 years. CNBC had the 30-year at its highest since 2004 and the 30-year mortgage rate at 7.45%, the highest since April 2024. The data gave the bond market a reason: the S&P Global composite PMI rose 2.4 points to 58.4 in September, its highest since July 2021 (Kobeissi), and Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson said "modest" further rate moves are likely (CNBC), eight days after the September 16 hike. The long-bond fund fell 1.29% on 1.81 times its volume, below its 20-day ($81.56). Credit is still orderly: the high-yield spread was 2.73% on September 23 (FRED) and the VIX closed at 15.67.
The index is still one sector wide. The S&P 500 fund is 1.56% from its high. The equal-weight fund fell 0.50% to RSI 32.3 and sits 2.4% above its 200-day ($205.24): a deep pullback in an intact trend, with that average as the line. Only communication services (+1.27%), health care (+0.63%) and energy (+0.37%) closed green among sector funds; utilities are at RSI 21.7. CNBC framed the week as a bond liquidation wrecking small caps, and Kobeissi reported $3.3 billion left the Russell 2000 fund last week.
Oil rose on mixed diplomacy. The oil fund gained 2.86%. Semafor had crude above $100 on the US-Iran deadlock, while Bloomberg had it steadying as negotiators explored a phased deal to reopen Hormuz. Trump hosted Xi and the two sides extended their trade truce (CNBC, Semafor).
The lanes that moved
Genomics and life-science tools ran as a group. The biotech capital-cycle lane rose 3.3% at the median with 32 of 37 up. Twist Bioscience rose 16.11%, 10x Genomics 11.23%, Pacific Biosciences 12.06% and Ginkgo 19.46% on 3.09 times volume; Illumina, Tempus and Bruker each gained more than 7%. Nothing on file dates a cause to Thursday; the only filings are insider Form 4s. The leaders are not entries: Twist sits 154.1% above its 200-day and 10x 158.3%.
GRAIL rose 15.38% on 3.02 times volume to RSI 86.4, up 56.61% in a week. An FDA advisory panel reviewed its Galleri test September 23; Endpoints reported members raising questions on effectiveness, while GRAIL's news pull credits briefing documents that eased safety and accuracy concerns. Neither records a vote. Viking fell 11.76% on 5.99 times volume after filing two prospectus supplements on September 23 (SEC); its pull describes a $400 million financing. Lilly rose 2.68%, so this was Viking's dilution, not the obesity trade.
Quantum rose as one, 12 of 13 up. IonQ gained 5.74% on 1.97 times volume and retook its 200-day ($43.68), but the year is still down 39.1%: a turn attempt, not a trend. No member's pull explains the day.
Disk and flash storage sold while Micron held. Nearline storage fell 3.4% with none of three up; memory fell 1.7% with two of 10 up. Western Digital fell 4.94%, SanDisk 3.47% and Seagate 1.94%; Micron rose 0.81%. Cause unknown: SanDisk's and Micron's pulls hold nothing on the day, and Western Digital's and Seagate's were last refreshed August 8 and July 31. The long trends are intact (Seagate +304.97% on the year, 43.3% above its 200-day). After the bell came Akamai's $11.6 billion, seven-year compute deal with Anthropic; an X summary puts about $1.7 billion of its 2026 capex toward pre-buying components such as memory.
Uranium and nuclear sold as one, 1 of 19 up. Uranium Energy fell 4.82% and Cameco 2.95%; nothing on file carries a cause. Cameco is the only member with a one-year record that is up on the year, and it is 16.7% under its 200-day. Money has been leaving this lane all month.
Everpure rose 11.15% on a fiscal 2028 outlook of $7.0–7.3 billion in revenue (X posts summarizing its September 23 release) as it joins the S&P 500. NetApp rose 0.46% and the disk makers fell: one company's guide, not a storage bid.
First Solar fell 10.32% on 3.03 times volume, cause unknown (its pull explains no 3x-volume drop); 24.1% under its 200-day on a −21.45% year, it is broken. Fastly fell 10.02% and Akamai 6.78% in the regular session, before the deal. Arm fell 7.88% after a 15.64% week, cause unknown. Unity fell 6.08% and the natural-gas fund rose 6.26%, both on heavy volume; neither was news-pulled for this move.
Neoclouds: Nebius confirmed, the miners drifted
Nebius rose 7.44% on 1.65 times volume to $243.48, its second close above the $226.58 September 4 high the September 23 brief named as the breakout trigger. Its pull holds nothing newer than August 19; cause unknown. The sector's news was Oracle's force-majeure notice on a data-center project (CNBC); Oracle fell 3.47%. CoreWeave rose 3.72% but is still under its 200-day ($92.18). The miner conversions slipped: Galaxy −2.33%, IREN −1.91%, Cipher −1.36%, Hut 8 −0.90%. Nebius (+115.03% on the year) and Hut 8 (+168.2%) are the intact trends; Applied Digital, 16.1% under its 200-day, is the broken one.
Watch Friday: FRED posts Thursday's 10-year close, and a print above 5.11% sets a fresh high since 2007. The equal-weight fund's 200-day ($205.24) is the line between a breadth pullback and a break. Akamai and Fastly open on the Anthropic deal, and Costco trades a beat that MarketWatch said leaned on tariff refunds. Micron reports September 30.

EDA software — +1.2%, three of five up. Cadence +4.18% and Synopsys +2.87% extend a strong week, but both are under their 200-day with years near −9%. Turning laggards, not trends yet. Semiconductor IP licensors — +1.0%, four of seven up (Cadence, Synopsys, Credo, Rambus); Arm's 7.88% drop was the drag. AI sensors and perception hardware — −1.5%, none of 13 up. A shallow, broad giveback (Coherent −3.32%, Infineon −2.73%, Nvidia −0.41%) after a strong week; Lumentum is still +508.21% on the year. CMP slurries and consumables — −1.5%, none of four up; Applied Materials was flat (−0.03%) after a 13.62% week. Specialty gases and process chemicals — −1.5%, none of five up; Albemarle (−4.6%, 30.7% under its 200-day) is the weak link. Semiconductor bonding and interconnect materials — −1.6%, one of five up (Ametek +0.52%). MKS fell 1.8% and sits under its 200-day.

5. The Wild & Whacky
Iran's parliament speaker trolled the bond market. Ghalibaf posted "Happy 5.1% 10Y America, we'll return you to 1970s rates" (Kobeissi), the same day Iran handed Washington a roadmap to end the war (Semafor). Akamai closed down 6.78% on 2.06 times volume, then announced an Anthropic deal. Posts on the $11.6 billion, seven-year compute deal began just after 4 p.m. ET, and Bloomberg's closing-bell segment led with Akamai surging. Fastly, its closest listed peer, fell 10.02% in the same session. Stitch Fix beat and fell 21.63%. It lost $0.01 a share against a $0.06 consensus loss, then dropped on 6.76 times volume; the call's tempered fiscal 2027 outlook and 1.4% fewer active clients (Yahoo Finance, MarketBeat) did the damage. The lenders the bond rout should help fell as a block. Semafor wrote that higher yields could be a boon for private-credit firms like Apollo and Blackstone; all ten alt managers fell, Apollo 2.95% and Blackstone 1.73%. Genomics tools are posting memory-stock years. 10x Genomics is up 597.43% on the year and Twist Bioscience 581.09%, both more than 150% above their 200-day. Xanadu is the one quantum name that can't catch the bid. Down 33.42% in a week to RSI 16.6 on a day 12 of 13 quantum names rose, with no cause on file.
6. What I'd Tell a Friend
The bond market is setting the tempo, and the index is hiding it. The S&P 500 fund is 1.56% from its high while the equal-weight fund sits at RSI 32.3, 2.4% above its 200-day ($205.24). That average is the line: hold it and this is a breadth pullback in an intact trend; lose it and the average stock's trend is broken. The all-clear is a close back above its 20-day ($215.50) with at least nine of eleven sector funds green; Thursday had three.
Don't chase Thursday's leaders. The genomics tools are 150%-plus above their 200-day and GRAIL is at RSI 86.4; the entry in that group is a flag, not a 16% day. Nebius is the one focus-lane setup that confirmed: two closes above $226.58, with the nearest shelf at $219.70 as the stop. Memory and disk storage are pullbacks in intact trends; wait for Micron on September 30 rather than guess. Uranium is broken on the year everywhere but Cameco; Cameco's nearest shelf is $86.09, and there is no turn until it builds a higher low above it.
The one thing to watch: Friday's posted 10-year close against 5.11%, and whether the equal-weight fund holds $205.24.

A desk call is an authored stance from a published report; entry and invalidation conditions are human-read, and the full ledger lives at /calls.
30d vs SPY is the raw name-vs-SPY move since the call — for trim/sell calls a NEGATIVE number means the call worked (the name fell after it).
From the Feeds
Curated picks from the last 7 days of the X / Reddit / Discord / web sweep — items the desk read and kept, not the raw capture firehose. Source: -pick- (type: curated-find).
webMarketWatch — Micron has become a battleground stock as the AI narrative shifts to the durability of memory demand $MU $SNDK · link- A sell-side read (UBS) on exactly the memory campaign's open question: how long pricing survives the supply response. Useful positioning context a week before Micron's September 30 print; the campaign's next review is dated the same day.
webCNBC — the market now prices the next Fed hike for October after Barr's comments and a hot S&P Global inflation reading $XLU $XLRE $XLF $KRE · link- The front-end story behind the two-year at a 52-week high 88bp above fed funds: the September 16 hike is being read as the first of a series. Pairs with the rate-sensitive sectors at capitulation readings on the desk's board (utilities RSI 23.5, REITs 26.0, financials 28.4).
webBloomberg — five-year Treasury yields breach 5% for the first time since 2007 as the bond slide deepens $TLT $IEF $LQD $HYG · link- The dated receipt for the week's macro: robust data plus a weak auction pushed yields across most maturities to two-decade highs on September 23, a week after the Fed's 25bp hike. The desk's FRED read says the year's move is real yields (TIPS 1.75% to 2.62%), not breakevens, and credit spreads have not moved.
webFrontier Map — gas turbines: the plans, the slots and the factories behind the US gas-fired buildout $GEV $VRT $ETN · link- The delivered-output leg the AI power campaign keeps asking about, mapped plant by plant with the factory slots that gate it. Primary-source-grade for the interconnection and generation-equipment case; read against GEV's order book and the ai-power-bottleneck review of September 11.
webBloomberg — Nvidia is now among the most traded names in US credit default swaps as investors hedge its debt after June's billion bond sale $NVDA · link- A financing-leg data point for the AI capex digestion case: the hedging demand is on the debt the buildout is now funded with, not the equity. Read with the CoreWeave-linked junk bond noted in the September 21 campaign checkpoint.
webMarketWatch — fewer stocks are carrying the S&P 500 than at any time since the dot-com peak $SPY $RSP $QQQ · link- The independent measure of the concentration the desk reads every night in equal-weight versus cap-weight: on September 23 nine of eleven sector funds are down over 30 days while the cap-weighted index is up 0.57%, so the index is one sector wide. Worth reading for the historical base rate it supplies.
webBloomberg — AXIS CEO Vince Tizzio — marine cover around Hormuz is up 30-40% on a year ago $AXS $FRO $DHT $STNG $INSW · link- The same day tankers sold off on a Hormuz reopening report, the chief executive of a top specialty insurer said marine policy pricing is still 30-40% above year-ago rates with demand high — the contract market has not withdrawn the war premium the equity market just marked down.
webMarketWatch — jet fuel is following diesel's price jump as refineries run short $VLO $PSX $MPC $UAL $DAL · link- The refining squeeze is spreading from diesel to jet fuel, which is the mechanism the energy-to-households case runs on: the shock reaches consumers through refined products and freight rather than through crude alone.
webEndpoints News — Endpoints — Nvidia-backed AI biotech Iambic Therapeutics files for IPO $NVDA $XBI · link- An AI-first drug developer backed by Nvidia has filed to go public, disclosing pipeline and pharma-partnership detail for the first time; a filing is not a pricing, but a well-received AI biotech IPO is one of the signals the biotech funding-cycle case is waiting on.
webVikram Sekar — Vik's Newsletter — ECOC 2026 product announcements around optical scale-up $LITE $COHR $TER · link- A roundup of the optical-scale-up launches at this year's ECOC conference, naming Teradyne, ams OSRAM, Lumentum, Qualcomm and Coherent. Directly on the optics campaign's question of which suppliers turn bandwidth demand into products.
webCNBC — Monday's gain carried a breadth reading not seen since 1999 $SPY $RSP $QQQ · link- The cap-weighted index rose sharply while the average stock did not — the same split the settled tape shows, with the equal-weight S&P barely green. A useful outside read on how narrow the leadership is going into a week with a Trump-Xi summit and Q2 GDP.
webSemiAnalysis — how mixture-of-experts models map onto inference hardware $NVDA $MU $ALAB · link- A structural piece on computation and data movement when serving MoE models — the part of the AI stack where memory bandwidth and interconnect, not raw compute, set the cost. Worth the read for anyone holding a view on memory or interconnect demand from inference rather than training.
webBloomberg — a CoreWeave-leased data center goes to the junk-bond market for about $1.1 billion $CRWV $OWL · link- Goldman-led banks are selling roughly $1.1 billion of high-yield debt to build a Blue Owl-sponsored data center leased to CoreWeave. How neocloud capacity gets financed — and at what spread — is the digestion case's live question, and this is a dated, priced data point on it.
webCNBC — Texas governor orders a data-center permit halt weeks after a moratorium $VST $IREN $APLD $CRWV · link- Texas, the largest single market for new AI data-center power, is halting permits weeks after a moratorium, with data centers now a midterm-election issue. A policy constraint on the interconnection leg the AI power campaigns track.
webAju Press — Hormuz is down to four ships a day and war-risk cover costs 40 times normal $FRO $STNG $INSW · link- Transits fell from roughly 125 vessels a day before the war to four on Sept 14, a VLCC's war-risk premium now runs from $250,000 toward $10 million, and Bab el-Mandeb moved 23% of its August 2023 box capacity. This is the arithmetic that turns a Gulf strike into a shelf price in Europe and the US, on a one-to-two-quar…
webSemafor — shipowners ordered twice 2025's tanker count this year, the biggest buying spree in 25 years $FRO $DHT $STNG $INSW · link- Owners have committed roughly $20 billion to newbuilds and daily lease rates are up about tenfold year over year, because the shut Saudi East-West pipeline is pulling crude from the Americas on far longer voyages. Capital spending is the strongest form of a freight call: the market thinks the ton-mile shock outlasts t…
webCNBC — record diesel hits trucks and rails first, then everything they carry $VLO $PSX $MPC $DINO · link- Diesel is the fuel that prices freight, and it set records this month while crude sits well below its 2022 peak — the shortage is refining capacity, not oil. Worth reading beside the August inflation print, where the energy line has fully arrived and the grocery line has not: this piece is the mechanism by which the s…
web— SEC clears path for tokenized stocks, bringing the market closer to 24/7 trading $COIN $HOOD $BTC-USD · link- The structural item of the week, and the one with a real mechanism behind Coinbase's 11.66% Friday. The SEC's long-awaited Innovation Exemption landed September 17 — two days after the Senate blocked the Clarity Act market-structure bill, which had been the industry's top legislative priority. Securitize jumped the sa…
web— Long-Term Bitcoin Holders Just Stopped Selling After a 260,000 BTC Dump $BTC-USD $IBIT $MSTR · link- The only supply-side read on file for the week bitcoin jumped 6.26% in a single Friday session with no catalyst attached to it. Three days before that move, Yahoo Finance reported that long-term holders halted a 260,000-coin distribution. If Friday had a mechanism, a supply stoppage of that size is the most plausible…
