Brief Ticker Tape

1. The Read

Two markets traded on Tuesday and only one of them showed up in the index. The S&P 500 tracker $SPY closed -0.6% and the equal-weight $RSP -1.0%, which looks like a quiet drift lower until you look underneath: eleven lanes closed at least ninety percent green and thirteen closed at least ninety percent red. The war is what is setting the terms. Coverage of the U.S.-Iran fighting ran across thirteen sources on the day, with Bloomberg reporting crude climbing toward $100 and Charlie Bilello counting European natural gas up 143% since the conflict began — a figure that read +125% a day earlier. The Brent tracker $BNO closed 57.73 on 2.15x volume, +23.0% over thirty days, and in doing so crossed above the $57 level that the August 18 bond-fear call had written down as its own invalidation. Gold moved lower on the fresh escalations rather than higher, which is not how the safe-haven reflex is supposed to work.

That energy move is arriving at the worst possible moment on the calendar. A strong jobs report has revived talk of a Federal Reserve hike rather than a cut, with the Producer Price Index due Thursday, the Consumer Price Index Friday and the Fed meeting the week after. The funding market is already moving: the yen gauge $FXY rose 1.52% on the day and 4.13% on the week to an RSI of 72.6, the shape a carry unwind makes. Three independent conditions — yen, breadth, crude — crossed in the same session and all point the same direction.

Underneath that, the AI-hardware complex re-rated hard and together. Neoclouds closed +6.3% at the median with nine of ten members up, six and nine tenths of a point ahead of the index; optical supply chain closed +5.1% with twenty-seven of its thirty-one settled names green; copper went seven for seven at +4.9%. The optics move has a name attached to it: Deutsche Bank and Evercore ISI both initiated coverage this week on the 1.6-terabit transceiver ramp, Deutsche Bank putting a $400 target on $COHR, and $LITE was reported powering higher on exactly that AI-optics demand story with management pointing at $40 of earnings power by 2028. $LITE closed +11.0%, $VIAV +11.2%, $AXTI +12.9%, $GLW +7.6%. In the cloud names $CRWV closed +11.7% and $NBIS +7.7%, while $IREN added +5.0% after its two-gigawatt Sweetwater Hub took conditional ERCOT status. Power and energy infrastructure delivered actual numbers rather than sentiment: $SEI jumped +16.3% on raised third- and fourth-quarter EBITDA guidance, the new third-quarter range $110–130 million against a prior $90–105 million, and $EOSE rose +10.8% on a $350 million clean-energy project with Google and MN8.

The discipline point is that this is a rebound, not a breakout. Almost every one of those names is up double digits on the week while still negative or barely positive across thirty days, and the same complex — $IREN, $CIFR, $WULF, $SMR, $VST — populates the washout list of names sitting a quarter or more below their highs with both trailing windows just turning up. Ten entry levels were crossed on the close. Every one of them cleared on price alone while the written conditions ask for a reclaim, a held flag and business evidence, and several crossed while still reading weak-down: $COHR is -20.4% over thirty days, $SOXX cleared its level by a single percent on a -2.7% month, and $MRVL sat $0.83 above its trigger on below-average volume. This is the pop, which is the second leg of a bottom-pop-flag-breakout, and the flag has not been built.

The other side of the tape was ugly and specific. Biotech closed -2.7% at the median with only four of thirty-nine names up, healthcare -2.5% with two of twenty, and both lanes still rank as leaders over thirty days — the month is strong, the day was not. $AMGN fell -10.1% on three times average volume after BMO Capital cut it to Market Perform and UBS flagged a Novartis pelacarsen result as a margin concern, while Piper Sandler stayed at Buy. $DYN fell -16.4% ahead of long-term clinical data, $BEAM -9.5%, $SRPT -6.9%. Cloud software was worse in breadth terms than biotech: sixteen of sixteen names red. One move is worth naming precisely because we cannot explain it — $HWM fell -10.7% on 4.2x average volume, and the only coverage on file is a positive September 6 note about raised full-year guidance and a dividend increase. Cause unknown.

Watch Thursday: $ORCL and $ADBE both report after the close, and the Producer Price Index lands the same morning. $ORCL is the more interesting of the two — it sits 53% below its high and has already run +15.0% over the past week off that washout, so the print will decide whether the turn in the AI-infrastructure complex has revenue behind it or is still just positioning. The Consumer Price Index follows Friday, and with crude near $100 the inflation input is pushing the wrong way into both.
