Brief — Sep 24, 2026

Brief Ticker Tape

1. The Read

Treasury yields climbed to their highest since 2007 on Thursday, September 24, and the S&P 500 fund slipped just 0.08% while the average stock kept leaking: 646 of 1,117 tracked names fell, and the real moves came in whole lanes, with genomics tools and quantum up and uranium, memory and disk storage down.

Rates: the shock kept going, credit still hasn't flinched

The 10-year closed September 23 at 5.11% (FRED), and Kobeissi reported it above 5.20% during Thursday's session, the first time in 19 years. CNBC had the 30-year at its highest since 2004 and the 30-year mortgage rate at 7.45%, the highest since April 2024. The data gave the bond market a reason: the S&P Global composite PMI rose 2.4 points to 58.4 in September, its highest since July 2021 (Kobeissi), and Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson said "modest" further rate moves are likely (CNBC), eight days after the September 16 hike. The long-bond fund fell 1.29% on 1.81 times its volume, below its 20-day ($81.56). Credit is still orderly: the high-yield spread was 2.73% on September 23 (FRED) and the VIX closed at 15.67.

The index is still one sector wide. The S&P 500 fund is 1.56% from its high. The equal-weight fund fell 0.50% to RSI 32.3 and sits 2.4% above its 200-day ($205.24): a deep pullback in an intact trend, with that average as the line. Only communication services (+1.27%), health care (+0.63%) and energy (+0.37%) closed green among sector funds; utilities are at RSI 21.7. CNBC framed the week as a bond liquidation wrecking small caps, and Kobeissi reported $3.3 billion left the Russell 2000 fund last week.

Oil rose on mixed diplomacy. The oil fund gained 2.86%. Semafor had crude above $100 on the US-Iran deadlock, while Bloomberg had it steadying as negotiators explored a phased deal to reopen Hormuz. Trump hosted Xi and the two sides extended their trade truce (CNBC, Semafor).

The lanes that moved

Genomics and life-science tools ran as a group. The biotech capital-cycle lane rose 3.3% at the median with 32 of 37 up. Twist Bioscience rose 16.11%, 10x Genomics 11.23%, Pacific Biosciences 12.06% and Ginkgo 19.46% on 3.09 times volume; Illumina, Tempus and Bruker each gained more than 7%. Nothing on file dates a cause to Thursday; the only filings are insider Form 4s. The leaders are not entries: Twist sits 154.1% above its 200-day and 10x 158.3%.

GRAIL rose 15.38% on 3.02 times volume to RSI 86.4, up 56.61% in a week. An FDA advisory panel reviewed its Galleri test September 23; Endpoints reported members raising questions on effectiveness, while GRAIL's news pull credits briefing documents that eased safety and accuracy concerns. Neither records a vote. Viking fell 11.76% on 5.99 times volume after filing two prospectus supplements on September 23 (SEC); its pull describes a $400 million financing. Lilly rose 2.68%, so this was Viking's dilution, not the obesity trade.

Quantum rose as one, 12 of 13 up. IonQ gained 5.74% on 1.97 times volume and retook its 200-day ($43.68), but the year is still down 39.1%: a turn attempt, not a trend. No member's pull explains the day.

Disk and flash storage sold while Micron held. Nearline storage fell 3.4% with none of three up; memory fell 1.7% with two of 10 up. Western Digital fell 4.94%, SanDisk 3.47% and Seagate 1.94%; Micron rose 0.81%. Cause unknown: SanDisk's and Micron's pulls hold nothing on the day, and Western Digital's and Seagate's were last refreshed August 8 and July 31. The long trends are intact (Seagate +304.97% on the year, 43.3% above its 200-day). After the bell came Akamai's $11.6 billion, seven-year compute deal with Anthropic; an X summary puts about $1.7 billion of its 2026 capex toward pre-buying components such as memory.

Uranium and nuclear sold as one, 1 of 19 up. Uranium Energy fell 4.82% and Cameco 2.95%; nothing on file carries a cause. Cameco is the only member with a one-year record that is up on the year, and it is 16.7% under its 200-day. Money has been leaving this lane all month.

Everpure rose 11.15% on a fiscal 2028 outlook of $7.0–7.3 billion in revenue (X posts summarizing its September 23 release) as it joins the S&P 500. NetApp rose 0.46% and the disk makers fell: one company's guide, not a storage bid.

First Solar fell 10.32% on 3.03 times volume, cause unknown (its pull explains no 3x-volume drop); 24.1% under its 200-day on a −21.45% year, it is broken. Fastly fell 10.02% and Akamai 6.78% in the regular session, before the deal. Arm fell 7.88% after a 15.64% week, cause unknown. Unity fell 6.08% and the natural-gas fund rose 6.26%, both on heavy volume; neither was news-pulled for this move.

Neoclouds: Nebius confirmed, the miners drifted

Nebius rose 7.44% on 1.65 times volume to $243.48, its second close above the $226.58 September 4 high the September 23 brief named as the breakout trigger. Its pull holds nothing newer than August 19; cause unknown. The sector's news was Oracle's force-majeure notice on a data-center project (CNBC); Oracle fell 3.47%. CoreWeave rose 3.72% but is still under its 200-day ($92.18). The miner conversions slipped: Galaxy −2.33%, IREN −1.91%, Cipher −1.36%, Hut 8 −0.90%. Nebius (+115.03% on the year) and Hut 8 (+168.2%) are the intact trends; Applied Digital, 16.1% under its 200-day, is the broken one.

Watch Friday: FRED posts Thursday's 10-year close, and a print above 5.11% sets a fresh high since 2007. The equal-weight fund's 200-day ($205.24) is the line between a breadth pullback and a break. Akamai and Fastly open on the Anthropic deal, and Costco trades a beat that MarketWatch said leaned on tariff refunds. Micron reports September 30.
