Travel & Leisure Scan — October 16, 2026 Close
Travel and leisure split in two: lodging and booking names rose hard over seven days (Marriott $MAR +6.06%, Hilton $HLT +5.68%, Expedia $EXPE +5.37%, Airbnb $ABNB +4.72%) while the cruise lines and the airline fund fell ($CCL -1.71%, $RCL -1.62%, $NCLH -3.34%, $JETS -5.83%), and seven of nine names fell on Friday. The four names above their 200-day averages are the same four as a week ago and their cushions widened; Marriott (RSI 75.7) and Hilton (72.9) are now extended. Airbnb (+41.35% over one year, 19.8% over its line) is the strongest long trend; Booking ($BKNG) and Norwegian remain the broken ones.
Data as of the 2026-10-16 close for all nine tickers, including the airline fund ($JETS), from the desk's travel-leisure summary (Polygon bars). Comparison: the October 9, 2026 scan.
Quick Snapshot
| Signal | Reading |
|---|---|
| Overall | 🟡 Strong lodging and booking week, weak cruise and air; long structure unchanged, four of nine above their 200-day averages |
| Leaders | Airbnb (strong-up, widest 200-day cushion, alpha +25.81); Marriott (best week, +49.8% one year, alpha +34.27, but RSI 75.7); Hilton (strong-up, 3.6% off its high); Expedia (pullback in an intact trend) |
| Laggards | Norwegian (collapse regime, -34.14% one year, 21.1% under its 200-day); Booking (downtrend regime, -17.49% one year); the airline fund (RSI 31.2, the only name in the 25–40 band) |
| Caveat | News receipts predate Friday for every name; no item on file explains the split between lodging and cruise |
What's Going On
The tape change is a divergence inside the group. Seven-day changes as of the October 16 close: Marriott +6.06%, Hilton +5.68%, Expedia +5.37%, Airbnb +4.72%, Booking +1.94%, then Royal Caribbean -1.62%, Carnival -1.71%, Norwegian -3.34% and $JETS -5.83%. A week ago eight of nine were up and the cruise lines were the story; now only the lodging and booking names are. Friday was weak: Marriott (+0.61%) and Hilton (+0.62%) rose, while Airbnb (-0.33%), Royal Caribbean (-0.83%), Expedia (-1%), Booking (-1.42%), Carnival (-2.12%), Norwegian (-2.21%) and $JETS (-2.67%) fell. The October 15 market brief had recorded all nine names in the travel and leisure lane up on Thursday (median +3.5%), so Friday reversed the direction for seven of them. Over thirty days Carnival (+15.88%), Marriott (+15.85%) and Hilton (+12.92%) lead; Booking (-4.64%) is the only name lower on the month besides $JETS (-7.01%).
Long-horizon structure sorts the names into three groups. Intact: Airbnb (+41.35% over one year, +28.52% over two, alpha +25.81, 19.8% above its 200-day, strong-up, 0.5% over its 50-day), Marriott (+49.8%, alpha +34.27, 10.2% above, 7.5% over its 20-day), Hilton (+34.04%, alpha +18.51, 8.5% above, strong-up) and Expedia (+35.3% over one year, +91.56% over two, alpha +19.76, 11.4% above its line, still 1.4% under its 50-day with a weak-down tag, so a pullback inside a long uptrend). Marriott and Hilton are stretched after their weeks. Under test: Royal Caribbean (-6.98% over one year, +37.64% over two, alpha -22.51, 3.1% under its 200-day) and Carnival (-8.19%, +21.03% over two, alpha -23.72, 5% under, downtrend regime) have negative years and positive two-year changes; their thirty-day bounces have not reclaimed the line. Broken: Booking (-17.49% over one year, -5.79% over two, alpha -33.02, 9.1% under, downtrend regime) and Norwegian (-34.14%, -38.72%, alpha -49.67, 21.1% under, collapse regime, 40.11% off its high). $JETS is covered in the airlines scan.
No cause is on file for the split. The news pulls for Marriott, Royal Caribbean and Carnival were taken the evening of October 15, before Friday's session; Hilton's was October 12, Booking's October 5, Airbnb's and Expedia's September 23 and Norwegian's September 18, so news was not pulled for Friday's moves. The latest sourced company events predate the week: Carnival's September 29 results (a beat, yfinance) and a Yahoo Finance item of October 9 on Royal Caribbean taking a roughly $3B, 50% stake in Sandals and Beaches resorts (headline-level; not tied to price). Crude rose sharply Friday on Iran's escalation in the Strait of Hormuz (CNBC, October 16), but no item on file ties it to these names, so any link is cause not checked in this scan. Form 4 filings from officers at Airbnb (October 14), Booking and Expedia (October 16) are on file; the capture's parsed codes show sales at Airbnb and Booking, and these are raw captures, not read filings. A Norwegian 8-K filed October 15 is on file with its content not parsed.
What Changed Since 2026-10-09
- Seven-day breadth: five of nine positive, from eight of nine. The cruise lines went from gains of +1.63% to +2.84% to losses; the airline fund extended its decline.
- Lodging and booking accelerated: Marriott +1.93% to +6.06%, Hilton +2.25% to +5.68%, Expedia +3.48% to +5.37%, Airbnb +2.12% to +4.72%.
- Names above the 200-day: four of nine, unchanged (Marriott, Hilton, Airbnb, Expedia), with cushions wider: Airbnb 15% to 19.8%, Expedia 5.7% to 11.4%, Marriott 4.3% to 10.2%, Hilton 3.1% to 8.5%.
- Names under: Carnival -3.8% to -5%, Royal Caribbean -1.6% to -3.1%, Norwegian -19.2% to -21.1%; Booking narrowed from -11.5% to -9.1%.
- RSI: Marriott 62.9 to 75.7 and Hilton 60.7 to 72.9 are both now in the 70–80 extended zone. Booking left the 25–40 band (36.5 to 45.1); $JETS (37.3 to 31.2) is alone in it. Carnival fell from 64.1 to 56.5 and its stretch over the 20-day eased from 11% to 4.6%.
- Airbnb's short tag turned from weak-down to strong-up and it closed above its 50-day; Expedia's gap to its 50-day narrowed from -7.3% to -1.4%.
How To Read The Board
RSI measures recent buying versus selling pressure on a 0–100 scale; under 30 is oversold, 25–40 is the watch band used below and 70–80 is extended. The short trend tag reads only the last few weeks. The longer-horizon checks are the gap to the 200-day average, the one- and two-year changes, and one-year alpha (return versus the market). None of these names carries a desk thesis rating, so everything here is raw price evidence, not a setup. Booking's prices reflect its 25-for-1 split of April 2026; history is split-adjusted. Table values show each row's data date; prose figures are as of the October 16 close.

Tier Analysis
Capitulation, RSI under 25: None.
Oversold, RSI 25–40: $JETS (31.2) as of October 16. It sits under its 200-day with negative one-year alpha, so the reading reflects damaged structure, not a dip in a healthy trend.
Neutral to strong, RSI 40+: Booking (45.1), Norwegian (47.5), Royal Caribbean (54.8), Carnival (56.5), Expedia (58.5), Airbnb (60.9), Hilton (72.9) and Marriott (75.7). Hilton and Marriott are the extended pair, in the 70–80 zone; the other six are mid-range.

| MAR | $352.21–$362.79 (200-day to support shelf) | Intact trend, RSI 75.7. Condition: a pullback into the zone that holds the 200-day; no chase near the base pivot at $395.02 (October 16 summary) |

What To Watch Next
- Marriott and Hilton after the stretch: Marriott's base pivot near $395.02 (16-week base) sits just above its close and Hilton's near $358 (24-week base); a break through with volume would be a breakout, a fade to the 20-day would be the pullback to watch (October 16 summary levels).
- Whether Airbnb holds its 50-day after turning strong-up, and whether Expedia reclaims its own; Expedia's pivot sits near $315.35.
- Cruise lines at their 200-days: Royal Caribbean at $286.51 and Carnival at $27.28; Carnival's support shelf is near $25.38, just under its close.
- Reports (provider estimates): Royal Caribbean and Hilton October 27 before the open; Marriott November 2; Booking November 3; Expedia and Norwegian November 4; Airbnb November 5.
- Oil over the weekend and Monday, and whether cruise or airline statements name fuel; today the link is context only.
