Leaders

top 7D losers1. The Read
This was a calm index tape with a violent leadership split underneath it. The engine finished with 261 confirmed uptrends against 118 downtrends and a slightly positive median one-day move, while the VIX stayed at 14.63 and credit remained orderly. But the winning boards were tightly clustered: cloud software gained a 5.0% median, nearline storage 5.0%, and memory 4.9%. Neoclouds fell 3.4% with nine of ten names red; copper lost 3.5% with every tracked name red; AI power fell 1.3%. That is rotation, not a market-wide risk event.
Software supplied the loudest explanation. Workday rose 17.8% on a report that Silver Lake was in talks to buy the company; CNBC called it the stock's best day in ten years. The distinction matters: this was a takeover report, not a completed deal, and it helped pull an already-strong cloud-SaaS board higher. Storage strength was broader and more internally consistent: all four nearline names were green, while SNDK gained 13.7% and MU 4.2%. The trailing rotation map still labels memory an outflow lane, but today's breadth and acceleration say that label is being actively tested.
AI infrastructure was the opposite: the umbrella theme hid company-specific delivery and permitting risk. Bloomberg reported that Chicago's mayor is seeking a temporary data-center moratorium. Separately, a KawzInvests/Hunterbrook post alleged two stop-construction orders at NBIS's Vineland site, while a Reddit post claimed Microsoft accepted delivery of IREN's 50MW Horizon 1 facility. The latter two are useful field leads, not primary-source findings; they should be verified before entering a thesis. CBRS, meanwhile, closed down 11.8% after its filed Q2 print but remains above the desk's $221.30 trigger, leaving three of five independent signal families lit. That is a deep-dive refresh prompt, not an automatic entry.
The discipline for Friday is simple: do not convert one-day rotation into a blanket sector call. Let the takeover-driven software gap settle, check whether storage strength holds, and read the actual filings behind the AI-power divergences. AMAT and several other August 13 prints remain scheduled/unread in the local calendar, so no result should be inferred from elapsed time alone.
Watch Friday: HIVE, DGXX, ASPI, RR, and PHGE are the next scheduled prints; before the open, confirm whether AMAT's August 13 result has landed and whether the CBRS/NBIS/IREN source gaps have been upgraded to primary evidence.

The desk's curated ETF read — one fund per lane it tracks, not every fund on the watchlists — grouped by what the fund is exposed to, and where each closed on the issue date. The big number and the tile's shade are that session's move (1D); 7D and 30D are the trailing windows behind it, and RSI is the 14-day reading (above 70 is stretched, below 30 washed out). 5. The Wild & Whacky
- Workday's +17.8% session was its best day in ten years—and came from a takeover report, not a signed transaction.
- SNDK gained 13.7% in one day while remaining down 13.1% over 30 days: the memory rebound and the prior damage are almost mirror images.
- HQ jumped 11.7% and is still down 21.3% over 30 days, a one-line summary of the quantum bucket's volatility.
- Two social field reports painted opposite neocloud pictures on the same day: alleged construction stops at NBIS's Vineland site and claimed facility acceptance at IREN. Both are leads awaiting primary receipts.
6. What I'd Tell a Friend
The market is healthy enough to be selective, which is exactly why selectivity matters. Cloud software and storage earned attention today, but the largest software move was takeover-driven and the largest memory move is still repairing a damaged monthly chart. AI power is no longer one easy demand trade: existing capacity may gain scarcity value while individual projects lose time to permits and execution. CBRS deserves a fresh post-print read because three independent bells remain lit above its trigger; it does not deserve an automatic buy. Let Friday's prints and primary documents decide what is durable.

A desk call is an authored stance from a published report; entry and invalidation conditions are human-read, and the full ledger lives at /calls.
30d vs SPY is the raw name-vs-SPY move since the call — for trim/sell calls a NEGATIVE number means the call worked (the name fell after it).

webBloomberg — Chicago joins the data-center moratorium push · link- Chicago’s mayor is seeking a temporary data-center moratorium and new development rules. This is a second live state/local siting constraint after New York: useful evidence that power and permitting scarcity can raise the value of existing capacity while slowing greenfield delivery.
webVikram Sekar — Viks Newsletter — where copper and optics still contradict each other · link- A fresh physics-down field read from OCP APAC on where rack connectivity remains copper and where bandwidth, reach, and power force optics. It is useful for testing the optical-supercycle boundary conditions instead of assuming every link converts at once.
𝕏Photon Capital — COHR’s AI mix and InP capacity ramp $COHR · link- A useful, explicitly secondary synthesis of Coherent’s quarter: AI infrastructure is becoming the revenue center while internal InP output remains the upstream capacity question. Read it as a map back to the company call, not as primary authority; it directly informs the optical-supercycle constraint watch.
web— The photonics desk's COHR scorecard: $2.05B at the top of guide $COHR $CIEN $NOK $LITE · [link](@crux_capital_ on X)- Coherent printed Q4 revenue of $2.05B, up 34% year over year and at the very top of its own guide, per @crux_capital_'s same-day read — and the account graded the print against the pre-earnings checklist it published hours before (6-inch InP ramp, gross-margin path toward 42%, the 1.6T transceiver ramp, the $4B+ OCS o…
𝕏— The Kobeissi Letter — memory is now the tape: NVDA, MU and SNDK are three of the four most-traded US stocks $NVDA $MU $TSLA $SNDK · link- One datapoint that shows how far the memory trade has come: Micron alone now turns over nearly as much notional as Nvidia, and SanDisk out-trades almost everything else on the tape. Crowding is the flip side — the lane's #1 risk has always been that everyone gets in.
𝕏— SemiAnalysis — TileRT compiles the whole model into one persistent GPU kernel, claiming 1.9x decode interactivity on the same Blackwell chips $NVDA · link- Software squeezing 2x more interactive inference out of the same NVIDIA silicon cuts at the core pitch of the dedicated inference-ASIC vendors (Groq, Cerebras, SambaNova) — and raises effective utilization per deployed GPU, which feeds the power-per-rack math the AI-power lane tracks.
𝕏Serenity — (aleabitoreddit) — AAOI's earnings call says China is years behind on CPO lasers, and AAOI itself is capacity-out of first-gen CPO $AAOI $SIVEF $LITE $COHR $AVGO · link- AAOI's own earnings-call language, not analyst spin: management says it is turning away CPO customers for lack of laser capacity and puts China's CPO laser gap at 2-3+ years. That's a primary-source data point on exactly the AXTI/optical-supply-chain chokepoint this desk is already tracking — points capacity scarcity…
𝕏Gaurab Chakrabarti — sulfuric acid for copper leaching has roughly doubled since February · link- A chemicals-company operator citing a real, checkable price series: US Gulf sulfuric acid (the reagent copper leach mines buy in bulk) roughly doubled from February to May and is still holding near double the pre-crisis level. A primary-source industrial-input data point for the copper cost structure, not a chart call.
𝕏Serenity — (aleabitoreddit) — White House puts real dollars behind critical-minerals names: WWR, SRL, FEAM, HREE $WWR $SRL $FEAM · link- Names dollar figures against four specific critical-minerals tickers in one White House funding round — graphite, scandium, boron and rare-earth magnets — rather than the usual vague onshoring rhetoric. HREE could not be ticker-validated this session (fetch failed) and is left untagged; worth a read for anyone trackin…
𝕏Gaetano — (crux_capital_) — the market sold off the wrong optical name: his bull case for why AXTI's China selloff is negotiating leverage, not a real ban $AXTI $AAOI $COHR $LITE · link- A specific, falsifiable bull case on why AXTI diverged from the rest of the optical complex on the same China headline: reads the drop as US negotiating leverage toward easing China's InP permit constraint rather than a real ban. Directly bears on the desk's own open question — AXTI's derate verification has sat unres…
𝕏Winston — (ChurchillWw) — a Mountain Pass-to-Fort Worth rare-earth magnet is now in an automaker's qualification process $MP · link- Traces a fully domestic mine-to-magnet chain — Mountain Pass ore into a Fort Worth press-and-sinter line — reaching an automaker qualification stage, which is MP Materials' own Mountain Pass mine and Fort Worth Independence facility by description. A concrete supply-chain milestone for the onshored rare-earth-magnet b…
𝕏IPO Newsroom — NVIDIA is putting up to $3B into the Blackstone-backed firm that owns the land under Stargate $NVDA $BX · link- A new equity stake, not a chip sale: Nvidia buying into the power-infrastructure landlord under the Stargate site (per The Information) is Nvidia moving up the AI-power stack into the land and grid layer itself. Directly on the AI-power-bottleneck thesis and not yet in today's brief.
