Brief Ticker Tape

1. The Read

The Federal Reserve raised rates a quarter point, its first hike since 2023, and the index barely moved: the S&P 500 proxy lost 0.44% while the AI build-out lanes that had the quarter's worst week bounced two to four percent as one.

Start with the decision. The macro news pull's most-corroborated story of the session, carried by fourteen independent sources, is the Fed raising its policy rate for the first time since 2023, citing energy prices from the Iran war and inflation that has not come back to target. The tape had positioned for it: the S&P 500 proxy closed $754.05, down 0.44%, RSI 41.8 and 1.4% under its 20-day average; the Nasdaq proxy closed $704.72, flat on the day (+0.03%), RSI 44.1; the small-cap proxy closed $283.92, down 0.43%, RSI 32.5 and 3.4% under its 20-day. Breadth was soft but not disorderly — 455 names up against 623 down at a median of -0.3%. The yields in the macro table are Tuesday's — the 2-year at 4.67%, the 10-year at 5.00% — so Thursday's close is the first read of what the hike did to them. Volatility did nothing: VIX 17.71, up 3%, inside its normal band, and the credit proxies fell less than a point and a half on the week — positioning, not a credit event.

The rate-sensitive lanes took it as written. Alternative asset managers closed down 1.8% at the median with all ten names red, and three of them are printing RSI readings most stocks never see — Brookfield at 22.9, Carlyle at 25.3, Brookfield Asset Management at 28.2 — after a month down 7% to 18% across the group. Financials closed 2 of 22 green. Food security closed 0 of 10 green, down 2.1%. And oil sold hard on a day the Fed named it as the reason for hiking: the oil fund fell 3.5%, Brent's fund 2.9%, the energy sector fund 2.88%, and Canadian oil and gas — the lane that led the month — closed 0 of 7 green at -4.0%, with Athabasca down 7.4% on 3.3× its normal volume. Diamondback fell 8.0% on 7.9× volume and there is no story on file for it: the name was outside tonight's news scope and its last pull is three months old, so treat it as unexplained rather than quiet.

Underneath the hike, the money went straight back into the lanes it had spent a week leaving. Data-center fiber and cabling closed up 3.6% at the median with 14 of 15 names green; data-center networking silicon up 3.6%, 12 of 16; the neocloud and AI-hosting complex up 3.5%, 9 of 10; optical supply chain up 2.6%, 24 of 28; optical transceivers up 2.2%, 21 of 23; switch and NIC vendors up 2.2%, 12 of 13. Every one of those lanes still ranks as lagging on the 30-day window — the neoclouds are down 8.4% on the week and Nebius and CoreWeave are still down 22% on the month — so this is a bounce inside a bad month, not a turn. The catalyst that is actually on file is Semtech: up 11.0% after record second-quarter revenue, an earnings beat, a raised third-quarter guide and price-target increases from Roth, UBS, Northland and Baird, all in coverage dated today. Lumentum (+9.59%), Credo (+7.38%) and Coherent (+6.92%) moved with it without a story of their own. In the hosting complex, Cipher led at +10.8% on 1.8× volume with nothing on its file but quote pages and last quarter's revenue miss — cause unknown, the pull ran — and TeraWulf (+6.21%), Core Scientific (+5.24%) and Applied Digital (+4.14%) followed.

Two other prints mattered. Forgent Power rose 11.1% on 3.0× volume after reporting record fourth-quarter and full-year results above the top of its guidance with an all-time-high backlog, earnings of $0.25 against a $0.24 consensus; the power-distribution and grid lanes behind it were quietly green (8 of 9 and 11 of 11). Aeluma missed, losing $0.15 a share against a $0.07 loss expected. Boost Run (+11.7%), Webull (-11.2%), Red Cat (-10.9% on 3.1× volume), Amneal (+8.6%), Enliven (-8.0%) and Arrowhead (-6.9% on 3.5× volume) moved past the reporting bar with no same-day story on file. One caveat on all of that: about a third of tonight's company-news pulls came back as raw search hits without a summary, so a name with no story here may simply be unread, not quiet. The social scans on the day's movers returned nothing worth repeating.

On the board, the regime flips are the story rather than any single name: 51 confirmed state changes tonight, and two of them are Amazon and Amphenol dropping from uptrend to pullback. Amazon closed $245.96, RSI 39.4, 4.4% under its 20-day. Broadcom is inside the under-$352.12 zone the desk set in August at $339.51 and still falling, RSI 32.5, down 6.83% on the week — the zone was written as a 200-day test and the test is failing. Gold's fund broke through the floor of its $415–$435 zone at $391.74 on a strong-down trend; the June profile already named $390–$410 as the accumulation zone below, and the close sits inside it — a proposal for the human, not a new call. Meta held $673.31, a third straight close above the $665 the desk has watched since July, at RSI 72.2. Marvell closed above its $224.58 trigger at $229.71. Illumina is the strongest focus name on the tape — up 2.99% to $228.93, RSI 63.4, up 18.53% on the month on 1.72× volume. Nothing on the board reached four bells; thirteen rows sit at three, all of them price alerts with the entry condition still unverified. Five names joined the steady-climber pool tonight — ASML, Crocs, Equinix, FLEX LNG and Johnson Controls — and WW International entered the washout watch, 59.8% off its high with its death cross intact.

Watch Thursday: the Treasury close for the first post-hike print on the 2-year and 10-year, and whether the fiber, networking and neocloud lanes hold a second day — a bounce that gives back today's move on Thursday confirms the month-scale rank, not the day. Then Friday's quarterly options expiration. Invalidation for the AI-lane bounce is simple: fiber and neoclouds red on Thursday with the S&P 500 proxy still under its 20-day.
