Brief — Aug 27, 2026

Brief Ticker Tape

1. The Read

Three separate wires flipped risk-on on the same close, and that's the day's real story. The index-turn trigger on the midterm-window thesis fired — SPY's momentum recovered with a positive month, the first confirmed index strength since that thesis was filed — while the sector-strength gauge flipped from mixed to cyclicals-leading-defensives and the rotation board swung to its most risk-on read in weeks. The tape agreed in both directions: SPY closed +0.66% about 1% off its high, volatility sat at a becalmed 14.5, and the day's biggest loser was a defensive — Hormel fell 10.3% on nearly five times normal volume after a fiscal third quarter whose operating income stepped down to $110.9M from $217.1M the quarter before. Cyclicals led, defensives bled, and the macro tape didn't argue: the Fed's preferred inflation gauge came in only slightly hot, per the August 26 coverage.

The loudest tape was software. Okta rose 28.6% on nearly six times normal volume, Salesforce 22.6%, CrowdStrike 20.5%, Palo Alto 12.8% — an earnings-driven surge with a heavy short-covering flavor, and it lands on a cyber cohort that had quietly built eight-to-ten-week bases before the fireworks. NVIDIA's own blowout — the August 26 fiscal Q2 2027 report beat, guided above consensus, and carried Jensen Huang's forecast of roughly 70% revenue growth for fiscal 2028 — was worth +8.74% on 2.55x volume, leaving the stock 3.6% from its high atop an 18-week base. But here's the tell: almost none of it reached NVIDIA's neighbors. The neocloud stack that exists to resell that compute barely moved — the best of them gained under 5%, CoreWeave actually fell 1.4%, and the group still sits 27–52% below its highs. IREN's annual report, filed the same day, shows why the market is being choosy: $707M of revenue against a $1.05B operating loss, with a $3.0B buildout funded by capital raised, not earned. The coverage around NVIDIA's own print named customer-financing relationships as a scrutiny point, and this cohort is where that scrutiny points.

Two more things a reader should have on the desk. First, Shopify joins the closely-watched list with a fresh deep dive: revenue re-accelerating (up 33.7% year over year in Q2, with merchandise volume up 32% and free-cash-flow margin above 18%), a tape that has rebuilt from $94 to $154 with the $182 prior high overhead, and an entry discipline that says wait for the $138–150 flag or the breakout — not the middle. Second, the deal tape: IPO Newsroom reports Anthropic could be public within weeks — prospectus after Labor Day, listing possible by early October, with existing shareholders selling into the offering. Single-source and unconfirmed, but if it holds it is the first real float of frontier-AI paper and the liquidity event the AI-IPO thesis has been waiting for. Bitcoin, meanwhile, cleared $80,000 with a hot reading — the tape half of an old reopen trigger — but with no fresh geopolitical catalyst attached, it stays a watch, not a signal.

Watch tonight and Friday: the after-close print block is heavy — Marvell, Workday, Affirm, SentinelOne, Elastic, and Gap all report tonight, with BYD and the tanker pair Frontline and Hafnia on Friday. Marvell walks in carrying a 38.4% month; that's the bar it has to clear. And Friday's main event isn't a print at all: Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh delivers his Jackson Hole speech — six separate outlets are already framing it as the week's pivot point, one day after the Fed's preferred inflation gauge came in slightly hot.
