Brief Ticker Tape

1. The Read

The price of money set the tape. US crude hit $100 a barrel and the ten-year Treasury yield topped 4.9%, its highest since 2023, with a Treasury buyback operation that bought fewer bonds than expected adding to the selloff (CNBC and Bloomberg, September 10). The oil fund closed +5.6% at an RSI of 78 on 2.3× average volume and the Brent fund +6.4%; the long-bond fund fell 1.2% on 2.1× volume, high-yield credit sagged to an RSI of 28.7, gold lost 1.7% and silver 5.3%. Volatility bid 8.4% to 17.84 and stayed inside its normal band — nowhere near a fire-sale trigger. The index damage was mild and the breadth damage was not: the S&P 500 fund closed -0.6% at $757.83 and the Nasdaq 100 fund -1.1%, while 844 of 1,115 names fell and 45 of 124 lanes closed at least 90% red. Not one closed 90% green.

The selling sorted by balance sheet, not by theme. The GPU-cloud independents closed -4.9% median with all ten members red, memory -4.2% with none of eleven up, NAND flash -4.1%, the nuclear fuel cycle -4.0% across nineteen names, copper -7.0% across seven — while the platforms that buy that capacity barely moved: Microsoft +0.2%, Alphabet +0.6%, Amazon -0.2%, Meta -1.4%. Nothing company-level explains the cloud lane. Not one of its ten members carries an event dated Thursday, and the only new corporate item points the other way — IREN closed its Mirantis acquisition. Volume did not confirm the move inside the lane either; eight of ten members traded below average volume, while the heavy prints sat elsewhere: Oracle 2.4×, Vertiv 2.3×, the oil fund 2.3×, the long bond 2.1×. Micron is the level that changed — at $979.91 it closed under the $989.96 flag ceiling its buy call requires, which returns that entry to wait.

What the news added was mostly retirement. Two Watches Retired on a Macro Day, published Thursday, closed the Danaher and Vertiv entry watches on levels rather than on company events: Danaher settled $200.53 against the $202.97 long average its call named, Vertiv $248.13 against $257.40 on 2.29× volume, the heaviest print in its block — and Vertiv's coverage has been failing since April, so that move stands unexplained rather than explained away. The cleanest print on the board belongs to AeroVironment: +4.5% on 5.9× average volume after fiscal first-quarter results, funded backlog up 37% to $1.5 billion, book-to-bill of 1.4 and a raised revenue outlook (Benzinga, September 10) — and it still sits 30.1% below its own 200-day average, down 25.0% on the month. Nothing on the social scans clears a second source.

Watch Friday: the August CPI report lands at 8:30 a.m. and the policy decision follows September 16, with crowd pricing on a hike at 63%. Three names printed after Thursday's bell. Oracle beat — non-GAAP EPS $1.92 against $1.74 expected, cloud infrastructure revenue more than doubled, the backlog grew again and the forecast went up (CNBC and MarketWatch, September 10). Adobe beat by four cents. RH cleared consensus by a factor of six on a day it fell 3.8% on 3.4× volume with a 10-Q on the wire. In the extended session — intraday quotes, not closes — Oracle was bid about 4% above its settled close, RH about 6.5% above, Adobe about 2.4% below, while Nebius, CoreWeave, Micron and SanDisk, none of which printed, kept drifting lower: two hours after the bell the read-through had not transmitted. $LPTH and $LAES print tonight. The trigger worth holding: a ten-year at 5.00%, or high-yield spreads at 3.50 points on two consecutive readings — the spread was 2.71%.
