Brief — Sep 17, 2026

Brief Ticker Tape

1. The Read

The session after the Fed's hike was the broadest up day of the month: 51 of the 122 lanes the desk tracks closed at least 90% green, not one closed 90% red, and the buying went into exactly the groups the month had been selling.

The index numbers are smaller than the breadth. The S&P 500 proxy closed $762.60, up 1.13%, at RSI 50.0 — dead center, still 0.2% under its 20-day average and down 0.63% on the month. The Nasdaq proxy did better at $716.92, up 1.73%, but small caps did not come: the Russell proxy closed $285.43, up 0.53%, at RSI 36.1. Underneath, 806 names rose against 278 that fell, at a median of +1.1%. Volatility collapsed — the VIX closed 15.44, down 12.8%, moving the posture from normal to calm — positioning, not safety — while credit did nothing either way, the high-yield proxy up 0.38% at RSI 38.2. The long bond caught a bid, up 1.11% to $81.78, and the yields in tonight's rates table are still Tuesday's — the 2-year at 4.67%, the 10-year at 5.00% — so the first clean post-hike read on the curve has not printed.

Policy diverged overnight. The Bank of England left rates unchanged Thursday even after UK inflation rose to 3.1%, a day after the Fed went the other way. The dollar proxy closed $28.38 at RSI 62.7, 1.0% above its 20-day; gold's fund rose 1.69% to $398.36 and is still 2.2% below its own — a gold breakdown against a firm dollar, in the regime work's own label — while a second gauge fired on miners leading the metal: gold miners +3.36%, juniors +4.75%, silver miners +4.49%. Oil went the other way, the fund losing 0.55% while still up 18.87% on the month, after reports that Saudi Arabia is offering additional prompt crude supply, including ship-to-ship transfers, with its East-West pipeline shut.

The lanes that moved as one were the build-out. Space closed 11 of 11 green at a +5.8% median, quantum computing 12 of 13 at +5.0%, and behind them the whole memory and data-center hardware stack — NAND flash 5 of 5, memory 10 of 10, AI storage 17 of 17, switch and NIC vendors 13 of 13, all between +4.5% and +4.8%, with semiconductors 17 of 18 at +3.0%. The month underneath has not changed: nine of the eleven space names are still negative over 30 days, twelve of the thirteen quantum names are, and the nuclear fuel cycle closed 19 of 19 green with 18 of those 19 still red on the week. Space and quantum both still rank as turning laggards. The one dated item behind the complex: Nvidia's chief executive said Thursday the company will sell twice as many chips next year, a forecast covering the next six quarters.

The focus lane — the neocloud and AI-hosting stack — closed 9 of 10 green, and the exception is the one that matters. CoreWeave fell 4.16% on 3.8 times normal volume, filed an 8-K, and told investors it is contracting compute at higher prices while launching an at-the-market program and a proposed $3.0 billion convertible note. Applied Digital (+8.16%), TeraWulf (+7.02%) and Nebius (+4.12%) rose without a story of their own. The demand language and the financing bill arrived in the same filing.

On the board nothing reached four bells, seventeen rows sit at three, and four are new tonight — Arm, Corning, MaxLinear and Vertiv. Arm is the one to read: $264.90, up 8.57%, 6.8% above its 20-day and back to +4.57% on the month, with the $270 reclaim the desk has waited on since August now the nearest level overhead. Micron closed $977.50, up 5.50%, still under the $989.96 ceiling its buy condition requires, which leaves that call at wait; the print is September 30 after the close. Illumina is the strongest focus name at $245.18, up 7.10% and 30.21% on the month, on two stories neither of which carries a filing in the desk's record — its S&P 500 addition and a transcript of an announcement to reacquire GRAIL — so call the week attributed and unconfirmed. Tesla joined the deep-drawdown turn screen, which doubled overnight from 12 names to 28.

Two dated causes are on the record. Generac closed $207.23, up 18.34% on 8.2 times normal volume, on an 8-K naming Amazon: a warrant for up to 1,693,745 shares whose tranches vest only against cumulative Amazon payments of up to $8 billion for backup generators at its data centers. The read-through did not happen — Cummins fell 0.69% at RSI 26.2, Caterpillar rose 2.02%, GE Vernova was flat, Vertiv rose 0.87% — so the market priced a contract, not a demand step-up, and tonight's first deep dive on the name grades it watch, not buy, with the 200-day at $210.05 unreclaimed. Ultragenyx rose 12.58% to $14.50 on an 8-K filed the same day, after the FDA granted full approval to its gene therapy for Sanfilippo syndrome — in a name still 43.11% down on the month, inside a biotech lane that closed 35 of 37 green.

The rest of the movers are cause-unknown, and tonight the receipts are complete enough to say so. The biotech capital-cycle lane closed 32 of 37 green at a +2.8% median and produced four of the day's largest moves — Schrodinger +26.37% on 7.2× volume, Absci +15.30%, Tempus +14.85% and Recursion +10.97% — with Biohaven +15.56% alongside them in no lane on file. All five pulls completed tonight and not one names a Thursday event: Take the lane's strength as real and every individual cause as unestablished. Power reads the same: the electricity lane closed 44 of 55 green on three single-name moves it did not share — Vicor +17.66% on a licensing story that is on the wire but in no filing, Power Solutions International +13.62% on a pull that came back with quote pages only, Innio +12.03%, whose completed pull stops at a July quarter carrying record equipment orders of $2.3 billion and a book sold out through 2027 — against Fluence −15.36% on 5.7× volume, which filed an 8-K on the 16th and whose completed pull names nothing since August 5, when it missed its fiscal third quarter and cut full-year guidance against a record $1.44 billion of order intake. MasTec fell 7.92% on 2.8×, with the other grid contractors red beside it. The fuel cycle's 19-for-19 day was led by the two names the desk's written thesis does not back — X-Energy +12.08%, whose pull failed outright, and Oklo +11.31%, whose pull returned explainers and no event — while the upstream expression it does back moved less: Centrus +7.80%, Cameco +2.09%. And Insight Enterprises fell 6.38% on 4.1 times normal volume with no news record on the desk at all.

Watch Friday, then September 30. Friday is quarterly options expiry, and the print map behind it is empty until Monday. The level that decides whether Thursday was a turn or a bounce is small: the S&P 500 proxy's 20-day, 0.2% above the $762.60 close. Reclaim it while space, quantum, memory and the storage lanes hold a second day, and the 30-day ranking is the stale thing. The invalidation is as specific — build-out lanes red on Friday with the index still under its 20-day, and nothing about the month changed. The marquee is Micron on September 30 after the close, which is also the test of whether $989.96 means anything; the June print moved that stock 15.4% across the event.
