Volatility Goes Quiet and Breadth Stops Deteriorating; Small Caps Have Not Signed on

Market Signal

Two of the market's market backdrop gauges changed state at the settled close of Friday, October 9, and both moved toward calm.

What fired. The volatility gauge moved from neutral to compressed. The VIX closed at 14.84, down 3.7% on the day, and the VIX futures fund (VIXY) sits 33% under its 200-day average and 58.94% under its 52-week high at RSI 39.3. The broad-breadth gauge moved from deteriorating to mixed. Across 15 broad index, sector and bond funds, 66.7% now close above their 20-day averages and 40% above their 50-day. The equal-weight S&P 500 fund (RSP) is back to RSI 50.8 from the oversold mid-30s of October 2, after a 1.58% week that beat the Nasdaq-100 fund's 0.23%.

The verdict: real, and partial. Both readings hold on the settled October 9 numbers. Neither is a buy signal. Compressed volatility means there is no fear discount on offer, and mixed breadth is a halt in the deterioration, not a confirmed advance: only 40% of those funds sit above their 50-day lines. The Russell 2000 fund (IWM) has not joined. It sits at RSI 38.5 in a weak downtrend, 0.7% above its $277.06 200-day, after a 0.92% weekly loss.

What it means. The week's selling stayed inside lanes: AI hardware on Thursday after OpenAI's smaller revenue figure (Financial Times, CNBC), then the telecom carriers and agriculture on Friday. Volatility and credit did not follow. The high-yield spread was 3.15% on October 8, under its 3.50 stress line. That is the profile of a rotation, with the bond market the one place under strain: the 10-year was 5.22% on October 8 (FRED), and Bloomberg reported forced selling of long-duration Treasury futures on Friday.

What to watch. The S&P 500 fund closed at $778.57. Two closes above $779.37 with the Nasdaq-100 fund above $748.65 and the VIX under 16 would confirm the advance; the last two legs already hold. A small-cap close under the $277.06 200-day would put the breadth repair in doubt. A VIX at 20 or a high-yield spread at 3.50 would reverse both gauges' message. The September CPI is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, and the bond market is closed Monday for Columbus Day.
