Market Pulse — Macro Dashboard
Growth sold off hard and energy, staples and volatility took the week ending Friday, October 16: the Nasdaq-100 fund (QQQ) fell 5.52%, semiconductors (SMH) 10.53%, cybersecurity (CIBR) 10.16% and cloud (SKYY) 9.37%, while the oil fund (USO) rose 9.15%, staples (XLP) 5.02% and the volatility fund (VIXY) 8.77%. The S&P 500 fund (SPY) lost 1.97% and closed 2.35% under its 52-week high. The cap-weighted indices are still above their 200-day averages; small caps (IWM), emerging markets (EEM, VWO) and copper miners (COPX) slipped under theirs, and gold joined the broken list. All 56 names carry a settled 2026-10-16 close.
LONG-HORIZON READ: if a name's short-term trend reads "down" but it trades above its 200-day average and is up on the year, it is a deep pullback in an intact trend, not a breakdown. Real structural damage takes both: a price under the 200-day and a weak or negative year. The 1Y and vs SMA200 columns carry that check.

What's Going On
The index bent; the Nasdaq broke. SPY fell 1.97% on the week to $763.25 and 1.11% on Friday alone, on 1.51 times its normal volume. It is 2.35% under its 52-week high but 5.3% above its 200-day ($725.01) and up 15.53% on the year: a pullback in an intact trend. QQQ fell 5.52% (2.5% on Friday) to RSI 35, 6.96% under its high, and is still 5.2% above its 200-day and up 18.3% on the year. The Dow fund (DIA) was the only major index up, +0.58%. Small caps (IWM) fell 3.05% and closed 2.6% under their 200-day ($277.65), which they held last week. The 20-day average is now overhead for SPY and QQQ.
Chips, software and security led the drop, and last week's leaders led it down. SMH fell 10.53% on the week and 3.41% on Friday, on 2.52 times normal volume, to RSI 31.4. It is 19.65% off its high but still 5.6% above its 200-day ($511.35) and up 57.24% on the year. Technology (XLK) fell 7.7% and sits 9.5% above its 200-day. CIBR, SKYY and software (IGV), the three leaders on October 9, fell 10.16%, 9.37% and 7.39%. CIBR is still 21.1% above its 200-day and up 32.08% on the year; IGV is 11.3% above its 200-day but down 7.5% on the year, so its trend is repairing, not established. Momentum (MTUM) fell 8.38% to RSI 29.7, the lowest reading on the board, and is only 1.8% above its 200-day. ARKK fell 8.89%, biotech (XBI) 6.15%. Only 24 of 56 names rose on the week and 16 on Friday.
Oil, staples and healthcare took the money; volatility was bid. USO rose 9.15% (2.83% on Friday), sits 35.6% above its 200-day and is up 138.55% on the year, the strongest long trend on the board. Energy (XLE, +4.86%, RSI 69.1) and producers (XOP, +4.63%) followed. Staples (XLP) reached RSI 71.9, the only name at 70 or above, and healthcare (XLV) gained 3.45%. VIXY rose 8.77%, including 8.11% on Friday on 7.37 times normal volume, but at RSI 59.3 it is still 26.5% under its own 200-day. Gold did not catch the flow: GLD fell 0.67%, is 7.9% under its 200-day and 25.05% off its high, and its one-year change is now −3.64%, so it moved from under test to broken. Silver (SLV) fell 5.97% and copper miners 6.73%; COPX is 4.2% under its 200-day but still up 27.72% on the year.
Treasuries rose, credit did not. The Treasury and investment-grade funds gained (TLT 2.65%, IEF 1.14%, LQD 0.97%, BND 0.85%) while high yield (HYG) fell 0.48% to RSI 32.4 and sits 3.6% under its 200-day. All five bond and credit funds remain under their 200-days and down on the year; TLT is 5.8% under its line and down 12.36%. Emerging markets weakened: EEM fell 5.91% to 1.2% under its 200-day, VWO fell 2.89% to 0.4% under it. China (FXI, KWEB) stays broken.
Context on file. Bloomberg's Friday close report called the week the S&P 500's biggest weekly loss since June, citing a spike in crude and worries about the viability of the AI trade pressuring chipmakers; Bloomberg also reported Brent touching $110 for the first time since May, and CNBC reported the VIX index above 22 for the first time in four months (all October 16). CNBC's October 15 report on the global hardware sell-off cited AI funding worries. These are the sources' own framings; the individual fund moves above were not traced to a cause.
What Changed Since Prior Scan
Prior edition: October 9. That edition's numbers are not reprinted. The points below compare its stated bands and lists with the October 16 close; the 7-day window starts at the October 9 close.
- Leadership reversed. On October 9, cybersecurity, cloud and software led, with utilities, staples and energy. Now CIBR, SKYY and IGV are among the weakest names on the board, and SMH again has the worst week.
- The capitulation band is still empty, but the oversold band turned over. It grew from 14 names to 19. Four stayed (IWM, HYG, JETS, URA); ten left (TLT, IEF, LQD, BND, VIXY, VXX, XHB, ITB, ITA, KRE); fifteen joined (QQQ, XLK, SMH, SKYY, VUG, MTUM, ARKK, XBI, EEM, VWO, EWJ, SLV, COPX, XME, TAN).
- One name is extended. XLP at RSI 71.9; the 70-and-above band was empty on October 9.
- The 200-day count slipped to 26 above and 30 below, from 27 and 29. IWM, EEM, VWO and COPX fell under; staples (XLP), materials (XLB) and retail (XRT) moved back over.
- Class changes. GLD and XME moved from under test to broken (their one-year changes turned negative); ITA moved from broken to under test.
- Treasuries kept bouncing but credit did not follow. Four of five bond and credit funds left the oversold band; HYG did not. None has reclaimed its 200-day.
How To Read The Board
RSI below 25 is capitulation. RSI 25–40 is oversold, and it means little without the long-horizon columns: here, QQQ, XLK and SMH are oversold above their 200-days, while HYG, URA and TAN are oversold below theirs. RSI 40–70 is neutral; 70 and above is extended. "vs SMA" is the distance from the 20-day average, a short-term positioning read only. "1Y%" and "vs SMA200" show whether the trend is intact. The Signal column labels each row: intact (above the 200-day, up on the year), repairing (above the 200-day, down on the year), under test (below the 200-day, up on the year) or broken (below the 200-day, down on the year), plus the RSI band when it is not neutral. For VIXY and VXX a rise means hedging demand, not a trend. Everything here is raw screen evidence from settled prices; none of it is a setup until a level is named and holds. The table shows 7-day, 30-day and one-year changes ending at the 2026-10-16 close.

Broken (19, counting the two volatility gauges): utilities, consumer discretionary, communications, China (FXI, KWEB), all five bond and credit funds, gold, natural gas, metals miners, uranium, homebuilders (XHB, ITB) and solar. The broken side is still mostly the rate-sensitive group of October 9, now with gold and metals miners added; what is new is the oversold intact side in growth.
Tier Analysis
| Tier | Names | Read |
|---|---|---|
| Capitulation (RSI under 25) | none | The lowest reading is MTUM at RSI 29.7, then URA at 30.7 and JETS at 31.2. The board has not washed out |
| Oversold (RSI 25–40) | QQQ, IWM, XLK, EEM, VWO, EWJ, HYG, SLV, COPX, VUG, MTUM, SMH, XBI, SKYY, ARKK, JETS, XME, TAN, URA | Nine are above their 200-days (QQQ, XLK, EWJ, VUG, MTUM, SMH, XBI, SKYY, ARKK) and ten are below. The above-200 group is pullbacks; the below-200 group (IWM, EEM, VWO, SLV, COPX, JETS, HYG, XME, TAN, URA) is trends under test or broken |

Entry Zones
Each level marks where a pullback stays a flag or turns into a break. These are conditions to watch, not orders.
| Stock | Zone / level | Confirmation | Thesis |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPY | 20-day $771.18 overhead; 50-day $768.5; 200-day $725.01 beneath | A close back above the 20-day. The October 15 market brief's broad-break line is SPY under $756.86 with RSP under $217.12 for two sessions | Index trend intact; price is under both short averages |
| QQQ | 50-day $726.77 overhead; 200-day $674.91 beneath | Holds above the 200-day, then a close back above the 50-day | Oversold pullback in an intact trend; a close under the 200-day would break it |
| SMH | 200-day $511.35; 50-day $579.03 overhead | Holds the 200-day, then reclaims the 50-day | Deep pullback in an intact trend; the one-year change is strongly positive |
| XLK | 200-day $167.51; 50-day $189.93 overhead | Holds the 200-day | Oversold pullback; semis are the weight |
| IWM | 200-day $277.65 | A close back above the 200-day, then the 20-day $279.31 | Slipped under; the breadth line |
| XLF, KRE | XLF 200-day $53.68; KRE 200-day $70.73 | XLF holds its line; KRE closes back above its own | Financials still over the line, regional banks just under |
| HYG, TLT | HYG 20-day $77.4, 200-day $79.71; TLT 200-day $84.95 | HYG closes back above its 20-day first. The October 15 brief's credit line is a high-yield spread of 3.50 | Treasuries bounced, credit did not; TLT is already over its 20-day but far under its 200-day |
| USO | 20-day $149.21; 50-day $142.68 | A pullback that holds the 20-day | Strongest trend on the board; chasing a +9% week is poor risk/reward |
| GLD | 50-day $397.18; 200-day $414.98 | A reclaim of the 50-day, then the 200-day | Year turned negative; broken until it reclaims |

What To Watch Next
- The index lines. Does SPY close back above its 20-day, or do two closes under $756.86 with RSP under $217.12 (RSP already closed under that level on October 16) make the October 15 brief's broad break?
- The 200-days under growth. QQQ's, SMH's and XLK's 200-day averages are the lines that separate a pullback from a break. Lam Research and Teradyne are scheduled to report October 21 after the close (October 15 market brief).
- Volatility. The October 15 brief's standing trigger is a VIX of 20 or above on two straight sessions; CNBC put Friday above 22. Does VIXY keep closing the gap to its 200-day?
- Credit. A high-yield spread at 3.50 (3.25 on October 14, FRED) or HYG failing to reclaim its 20-day would turn a rotation into a credit story.
- Oil. USO's 20-day is the pullback line; Brent at $110 (Bloomberg, October 16) keeps energy headline-driven.
- Small caps and emerging markets. Do IWM, EEM and VWO reclaim their 200-days, or does the under-200 count keep rising from 30?
