Breadth Flips to Deteriorating: Only Three of 15 Core Funds Hold Their 50 Day

Breadth Flips to Deteriorating: Only Three of 15 Core Funds Hold Their 50 Day

Market Signal

The market's broad-breadth gauge changed state at the settled close of Friday, October 16, from mixed to deteriorating.

What fired. Of the 15 core index, sector and bond funds the gauge reads, 3 closed above their 50-day averages: health care, staples and utilities, a 20% reading against the 40% line below which breadth is called deteriorating. The S&P 500 fund (SPY) sits 0.7% under its 50-day average ($768.50) and 1.0% under its 20-day. The equal-weight fund (RSP) closed $214.09, under its 50-day ($215.84). The Nasdaq-100 fund (QQQ) is 2.3% under and small caps (IWM) 6.4% under their 50-day averages, with IWM also 2.6% under its 200-day. All as of the October 16 close.

The verdict: real, and narrower than it looks. The reading holds on the settled numbers, not on a stale input. It is not a broad liquidation. SPY is still 5.3% above its 200-day average on a +15.53% year, and equal weight rose 0.49% over seven days while the Nasdaq-100 fund fell 5.52%. The selling sat in AI and long-duration growth lanes; oil, staples and health care took the money.

What it means. A rotation inside equities, with a fear day on top: the VIX closed at 19.99, up 21.5%, one tick under 20. Credit has not confirmed it. The high-yield spread was 3.23% on October 15 (FRED), under the 3.50 line, and the high-yield fund fell 0.48% over seven days. The desk's rotation article of the same date carries the lane-by-lane read.

What to watch. The signal is falsifiable on three lines: six of the 15 funds back above their 50-day averages, SPY back above $768.50, or a high-yield spread at 3.50, which would turn the rotation into a credit event. Two closes with SPY under $756.86 and RSP under $217.12 would make it a broad break; the RSP leg is already met, the SPY leg is not (SPY closed $763.25).
