Last week's open question got an answer nobody wanted: Starbucks lost the trailing-year edge the desk was watching. It now sits 2.5% below its 200-day average with alpha of -0.14, down from 0.8% above and +3.67 a week ago, and its RSI fell to 28.8 — the lowest reading in the book and the only oversold name in it. That leaves Crocs as the single name here positive on the trailing year and alpha, and Crocs picked exactly this week to add 17.2 RSI points on an 8.68% advance with nothing on file to explain it. Seven of eight names closed red Friday while optics and semiconductors rallied. This book did not participate in anything this week except its own divergence.

Numbers are the settled September 18 close for all 8 names. Friday was quarterly options expiry, so relative-volume readings are inflated. The Domino's news pull has not completed successfully since June 21 — nearly three months — so nothing about that name's recent moves has been checked; Crocs' last pull completed September 11 and predates this week's move entirely. Comparison baseline is the September 11 scan.

Quick Snapshot

Signal Reading
Overall 🔴 7 of 8 names closed red Friday; only 3 of 8 gained RSI, and the book's last clean horizon story narrowed from two names to one
Leaders CROX (RSI 53.5, +17.2 points and +8.68% on the week — and the only name in the book positive on trailing year and alpha), TSLA (53.8)
Laggards SBUX (RSI 28.8, the only oversold name and now below its 200-day), BRBR (31.1, thesis broken), DPZ (31.7, -5.58% week), NKE (32.2)
What changed Starbucks' trailing-year alpha turned negative (-0.14) and it lost its $98.26 200-day — last week's open question, answered the wrong way
Caveat Crocs' 8.68% week has no cause on file; the Domino's pull has not completed since June 21

What's Going On

Starbucks is the week's real event, and it is a quiet one. The desk spent the last two scans watching whether its trailing-year edge would survive — it was 0.8% above its 200-day with alpha of +3.67 last week, after a 13.1-point RSI collapse that had no confirmed cause. This week it fell another 2.95%, took RSI to 28.8, and crossed to 2.5% below a $98.26 200-day average with alpha of -0.14. The margin the desk flagged as narrow is now gone. Its trailing-year return is still positive at +14.88%, which is precisely the pattern the desk labels underperformance hiding behind a flat chart. Friday's 2.14 times average volume is expiry flow, not a signal.

Crocs went the opposite way with no explanation attached. It rose 8.68% on the week and 17.2 RSI points — by far the largest move in this book — closing 3.9% above its 20-day and 16.7% above its $104.77 200-day, with a trailing-year return of +52.12% and alpha of +37.10. Its news pull completed September 11 and carries nothing newer than that date; the desk's event record holds no Crocs event this month, and its next scheduled print is October 29. The move is unattributed. It is also the only thing keeping this book from having zero names that pass the horizon check.

Tesla continued a deterioration now three scans long. Its RSI barely moved (54.5 → 53.8) while its trailing-year return fell from -0.91% to -12.61% and alpha from -17.13 to -27.63; it sits 8.3% below a $397.33 200-day. The desk's thesis rating for the name is still intact. The horizon data has moved further from that label every week for three weeks, which is worth saying plainly rather than reconciling: the short-term chart looks fine and the long-horizon record keeps getting worse. Its next print is October 21.

The rest of the book did very little. Hims & Hers was the only green name on Friday (+0.36%) and gained 2.5 RSI points, closing exactly at its $27.98 200-day. Lululemon added 2.5 RSI points on a -0.92% week — a third consecutive small technical bounce inside a name still 34.4% below its 200-day with alpha of -57.25. Domino's fell 5.58%, the worst week here, on a receipt that has not completed since June. BellRing held its broken rating with the worst numbers in the book: down 75.52% over the trailing year, alpha -90.53, 44.9% below its 200-day and 75.91% below its 52-week high.

What Changed Since September 11

  • SBUX: RSI 31.8 → 28.8 (-3.0), and the change that matters — trailing-year alpha +3.67 → -0.14, and 200-day position +0.8% → -2.5%. Last scan's open question resolved against the name.
  • CROX: RSI 36.3 → 53.5 (+17.2), the largest move in this book by a wide margin, on a +8.68% week and 2.26x average volume; no cause on file.
  • HIMS: RSI 43.1 → 45.6 (+2.5); LULU 33.9 → 36.4 (+2.5), a third small bounce.
  • DPZ: RSI 34.8 → 31.7 (-3.1), on the book's worst week at -5.58%; NKE 34.2 → 32.2 (-2.0); BRBR 32.0 → 31.1 (-0.9); TSLA 54.5 → 53.8 (-0.7).
  • The positive-alpha group narrowed from two names to one. Crocs is now the only name in this book positive on both the trailing year and alpha.
  • Tesla's trailing-year return fell from -0.91% to -12.61% and its alpha from -17.13 to -27.63 — the third consecutive scan of deterioration on a name the desk still rates intact.
  • Seven of eight names closed red on Friday, against 27 of 28 green in the optical book on the same session. Hims was the sole green name here.

How To Read The Board

The useful division in this book is no longer strong versus weak — it is one name versus seven. Crocs passes every check the desk runs: above its 20-day, 16.7% above its 200-day, up 52.12% on the trailing year with alpha of +37.10. The other seven all carry negative trailing-year alpha, and six of the seven sit below their 200-day, with Hims sitting exactly on it.

That makes the low RSI readings here uninformative as entries. Starbucks at 28.8, Domino's at 31.7 and BellRing at 31.1 are oversold inside trends that are damaged on the long windows, not discounted inside intact ones. Starbucks is the clearest case of the distinction closing this week: as long as it was above its 200-day with positive alpha, a sharp drop read as a violent pullback; now that both have flipped, the same RSI means something worse.

Tesla is the opposite trap and the one the desk keeps flagging. Its RSI is the second-highest in the book, it sits 1.3% above its 20-day, and every long-horizon number has deteriorated for three consecutive scans. Read the direction of the horizon data, not the level of the RSI.

The Crocs move needs verification before it earns any weight. An 8.68% week and a 17.2-point RSI jump with a news receipt that predates the move and no event on the desk's calendar is a tape fact and nothing more. Its October 29 print is the first thing that can confirm or kill it.

SBUX $95.83 28.8 $102.94 -6.9% -2.95% -8.72% basing (lost its $98.26 200-day this week; alpha turned negative at -0.14)

Tier Analysis

Capitulation (RSI below 25): none.

Oversold (RSI 25-40) — 5 names: SBUX (28.8, and now below its 200-day with negative alpha — the reading changed meaning this week), BRBR (31.1, rated broken), DPZ (31.7, unverified for three months), NKE (32.2), LULU (36.4). Not one of the five carries positive trailing-year alpha, so none of these readings is a discount on an intact trend.

Neutral to strong (RSI 40+) — 3 names: TSLA (53.8, deteriorating on every long window), CROX (53.5, the book's only clean name), HIMS (45.6, exactly on its 200-day with alpha -65.21).

Entry Zones

Stock Entry zone Condition
CROX $117-122 (at or above the $117.69 20-day) The only name here above its 200-day with positive trailing-year alpha, but this week's 8.68% advance has no cause on file. The condition is the October 29 print, not the level
SBUX $95-98 (below the $98.26 200-day) Oversold at RSI 28.8, but the 200-day broke this week and alpha turned negative — reclaiming $98.26 is the condition that would make the low RSI mean what it meant last month
HIMS $27.98 (its 200-day, where it closed) Sitting exactly on the line, the only green name Friday, but alpha of -65.21 means the long record does not support a bounce thesis
LULU, NKE, DPZ, BRBR not zones All four are below their 200-day with deeply negative trailing-year alpha; low RSI here is damage, not discount

What To Watch Next

Watch Why it matters
Whether Starbucks reclaims its $98.26 200-day The line it lost this week, and the difference between an oversold pullback and an oversold breakdown; scheduled to report October 28
What drove Crocs' 8.68% week The largest move in this book, on a receipt that predates it, in the only name that passes the horizon check
Tesla's trailing-year alpha Down for three consecutive scans while the thesis rating stays intact — the gap between the two is the finding
A working news pull on Domino's Nothing has completed since June 21; the worst week in the book is entirely unchecked
Nike's print, scheduled October 1 on a provider-estimated date The first dated catalyst in this book, on a name 29.3% below its 200-day
Whether Hims holds its 200-day It closed exactly on $27.98 — the cleanest binary level in the book

The Gold

Key Discoveries

Discovery Implication
Starbucks lost both its 200-day and its positive alpha in the same week The desk's open question from last scan resolved against the name; its oversold reading now means something worse than it did
One name out of eight passes the horizon check This is no longer a book with a weak half — it is one working name and seven damaged ones
Tesla's horizon data has worsened for three consecutive scans An intact thesis rating and a deteriorating trailing-year record cannot both stay true indefinitely

Mistakes (Don't Repeat)

Mistake Lesson
Treating a low RSI as a discount without checking the 200-day Five oversold names here, none with positive trailing-year alpha — the tier tells you nothing on its own
Letting a three-month-dead news pull pass as "no news" Domino's has not had a completed pull since June 21; that is an unchecked name, not a quiet one

Open Questions

  • What drove Crocs' 8.68% week, and does it survive the October 29 print?
  • Does Starbucks reclaim $98.26, or was the trailing-year edge the last thing holding the read together?
  • How long does Tesla's intact rating survive three consecutive scans of worsening trailing-year alpha?
