Cultural Thesis Scan
Cultural Thesis Scan
The broken names bounced and the two healthier ones slipped. BellRing rose 15.07% on the week and Hims & Hers jumped 10.19% on Friday, both with no cause on file, while Nike climbed back above RSI 30 (37.7). Starbucks fell 4.18% to RSI 28.8, the book's only oversold name, in the week the Financial Times reported it had explored a takeover of Chipotle. Crocs, still the only name with positive trailing-year alpha, gave back 2.63%. Nothing changed on the long windows: six of eight names are below their 200-day and seven of eight carry negative alpha.
Numbers are the settled October 9 close for all 8 names (Friday), one week after the October 2 scan. All eight names have full 200-day and trailing-year data. Comparison baseline is the October 2 scan.
Quick Snapshot
| Signal | Reading |
|---|---|
| Overall | 🔴 6 of 8 up on the week, 5 of 8 green on Friday, but six of eight still under their 200-day and seven of eight negative on alpha; one name below RSI 30 (Starbucks) |
| Leaders | Tesla (RSI 59.7, 2% under its 200-day, thesis intact), Hims & Hers (57.1, +10.19% Friday), Domino's (50.5), BellRing (48.2, +15.07% week, thesis broken) |
| Laggards | Starbucks (RSI 28.8, gap to its 200-day widened to -8.3%), Nike (37.7), Lululemon (38.1), Crocs (41.9, below its 20-day) |
| The horizon check | Above the 200-day: Hims (12.9%) and Crocs (7.3%). Positive alpha: Crocs only (27.02). Hims is above its line on a -46.92% year. Tesla is the closest name under the line (-2%) |
| Caveat | Starbucks' week has dated news: the FT report that it worked with advisers on a Chipotle takeover proposal (via Bloomberg and CNBC, October 8); Starbucks said it does not comment on rumors (statement relayed on X). That is context, not a confirmed cause of the price move. Hims' Friday jump and BellRing's week are cause unknown: their news was last checked September 18 and September 11, so news was not pulled for these moves. No articles or posts dated October 9 are on file, and the October 9 events calendar lists only Delta's earnings and Oracle's dividend. |
What's Going On
The week ran against the long-window ranking. The names with the worst years led: BellRing +15.07% (RSI 48.2, from 22.9 on October 2), Hims +6.62% with a 10.19% Friday on 1.61 times normal volume, Domino's +3.94%, Tesla +3.27% and Nike +2.48%. The two names closest to healthy fell: Starbucks -4.18% and Crocs -2.63%. None of the bounces changed a long-window verdict. BellRing is still 41.3% under its 200-day on a -75.81% year with its thesis rated broken. Nike is 27.7% under on a -49% year. Neither Hims' Friday move nor BellRing's week has a cause on file.
Starbucks is the dated event. On October 6 Semafor reported that a Starbucks takeover of Chipotle was a theory that "keeps coming up," while people close to Chipotle said it had received no bid. On October 8 Bloomberg relayed a Financial Times report that Starbucks had worked with advisers in recent months on a takeover proposal, and Chipotle's shares jumped. Starbucks' reply, relayed on X, was that it does not comment on rumors and expects to share its fourth-quarter results and fiscal 2027 guidance later this month. Starbucks closed Friday -2.64% on 1.48 times volume at RSI 28.8. Its gap to the 200-day ($98.92) widened from -4.1% to -8.3%. Its year is still 13.75% with alpha -2.25, so it remains the most pullback-shaped name under the line, but the repair noted on October 2 has reversed.
Tesla is the closest to a structural change. It is 2% under its 200-day ($390.6) at RSI 59.7, up from -5.7% a week ago, on a -12.13% year with alpha -28.14. The desk rates its thesis intact. The chart needs a held close above the 200-day, and the 386.83 pivot of a 7.8-week base sits just below that line. Its report is scheduled for October 21.
Crocs is the one name that passes the horizon check, and it is cooling for a second week: RSI 41.9, 3.8% under its 20-day, still 7.3% above its 200-day ($107.15) on a 43.03% year with alpha 27.02. That is a pullback inside an intact trend. Hims is above its 200-day by 12.9%, but on a -46.92% year and -52.65% from its high it is a recovery from a drawdown, not an uptrend.
What Changed Since Prior Scan
- RSI below 30: Starbucks only (28.8). BellRing (22.9) and Nike (28.2) left the zone; Starbucks entered it from 35.
- Names under their 200-day: six (BRBR, NKE, LULU, SBUX, DPZ, TSLA), the same six as October 2. Tesla's gap narrowed from -5.7% to -2%; Starbucks' widened from -4.1% to -8.3%.
- Positive alpha: one (Crocs, 27.02), unchanged.
- Breadth: six of eight up on the week; Friday closed 5 green, 3 red, with Hims (+10.19%) leading and Starbucks (-2.64%) trailing.
- Leadership: Tesla still tops the RSI ranking (59.7) and Hims is second (57.1); Domino's (50.5) and BellRing (48.2) moved ahead of Crocs (41.9).
How To Read The Board
The long layer is unchanged: seven of eight names have negative alpha, and the four with trailing years worse than -45% (BellRing, Lululemon, Nike, Hims) are not discount candidates no matter how they bounce. A 15% week in BellRing on a -75.81% year with a broken thesis is noise until something on file explains it.
The cultural-thesis idea is a consumer-behavior frame rather than a valuation screen, and the price side still says the frame is mostly not working. Crocs is the only name passing the horizon check. Starbucks and Tesla are the two names close enough to their 200-day for a repair to matter.
Source limits: price and RSI against moving averages and the desk's thesis rating (BellRing broken, Tesla intact). No revenue, comparable-sales or estimate data are on this board, and news checks for Hims, BellRing, Domino's, Lululemon and Crocs are weeks old.

Entry Zones

| TSLA | A held close above its 200-day (390.6), with the 386.83 base pivot first | Thesis intact, -2% under the line, negative alpha; report scheduled October 21 |
| SBUX | A reclaim of its 200-day (98.92), -8.3% away; the 86.8 shelf is first support | Positive year, near-flat alpha (-2.25); the takeover report adds event risk, not a setup |
| NKE | None | Back above RSI 30 but 27.7% under its 200-day on a -49% year |
| BRBR | None | Thesis broken; the bounce has no cause on file |

| Crocs at its 200-day (107.15) | The only positive-alpha name has cooled two weeks running; its report is scheduled October 29 |
