Novo Nordisk broke this week, and the desk has a real reason for it: the company's own 2030 growth targets, announced September 20, read as insufficient against rising GLP-1 competition and looming patent expirations, and the stock fell about 6% that day. $NVO now sits at RSI 27.5, down 8.49% on the week and 35.89% on the year — the cut's clearest structural breakdown. $NKTR joined it from the other direction: RSI fell from 38.7 to 24.6 with no driver on the desk's record, the first name to sit in outright capitulation since $RARE vacated the band two scans ago. At the other end, the top of the cohort kept extending: $MRNA (RSI 71.9) and $ILMN (71.5) are both now in the near-overbought band the desk's own stretch screen flagged today, and $BIIB jumped from RSI 50.4 to 63.4 on a 5.33% week with nothing in its news file to explain it.

Data as-of the 2026-09-23 close (Wednesday's settled session) — every name in this cut carries a fresh bar; universe unchanged at 39 tickers.

Quick Snapshot

Signal Reading
Overall 🟡 A cohort splitting further apart — a real, sourced breakdown in $NVO, an unexplained new capitulation print in $NKTR, and the top of the board pushing into stretched territory on thin-to-normal volume
Leaders $MRNA (RSI 71.9, +25.06% on the week, +606.13% on the year); $ILMN (71.5, +11.55% on the week, +157% on the year, but on only 0.62x average volume); $TMO (71.5, +2.6% on the week, trend intact); $BIIB (63.4, +5.33% on the week, no news receipt covering the move)
Laggards $NKTR (24.6, cratered from 38.7, no cause found); $NVO (27.5, -8.49% on the week on a sourced 2030-guidance disappointment); $IMVT (28.5, down from 36.1, but still 10% above its 200-day with a +131.81% year — a pullback, not a breakdown)
Key insight $NVO is the one name in this cut with an actual corpus-sourced cause for its break; $NKTR's identical-looking capitulation print has none — treat the two very differently
Caveat $NKTR's news file was last pulled June 21 and predates this move by three months; that silence is a coverage gap, not evidence nothing happened

What's Going On

The cohort's bottom got a real story this week. Novo Nordisk laid out 2030 growth targets on September 20 that investors read as inadequate given rising GLP-1 competition and approaching patent cliffs, and the stock dropped roughly 6% that session (Investing.com, via the desk's news pull). A day later Wegovy picked up a China approval for MASH, a genuine positive, but it didn't offset the guidance reaction: $NVO closed the week at $38.17, RSI 27.5, down 8.49% on the week, 18.65% on the month and 35.89% on the year, now 17.1% below its 200-day. This is the rare case in this cut where a name's break has a corpus receipt behind it rather than an open question.

$NKTR is the opposite case. RSI fell from 38.7 to 24.6 — the cut's only capitulation print — on a 14.43% weekly decline that has nothing behind it on the desk's record. Its news file was last pulled June 21, three months before this move, so the silence there is a coverage gap, not an answer. The break also changed $NKTR's structural read: a week ago it passed the long test with a positive year and a price above its 200-day; it now sits 11.9% below that average with a -3.26% year, a genuine trend failure rather than a bounce-worthy dip.

The top of the cohort kept running, and two of those names are the exact ones the desk's own stretch screen flagged today. $MRNA closed at $182.11, RSI 71.9, up 25.06% on the week and 606.13% on the year, on volume close to its average (0.96x) — an extreme multi-quarter move continuing rather than reversing. $ILMN closed at $255.38, RSI 71.5, up 11.55% on the week and 157% on the year, but on only 0.62x its average volume — the same stretch, thinner participation behind it. $TMO also crossed into the same band at 71.5. None of these three is a new signal; each is the continuation of a trend this scan has called extended for multiple weeks running.

$BIIB is the week's quieter surprise: RSI jumped from 50.4 to 63.4 on a 5.33% gain, and the desk's news file — last pulled September 16 — has nothing dated to this move. $IMVT deserves the opposite read from what its falling RSI suggests: it dropped from 36.1 to 28.5 on a 5.06% weekly decline, but it remains 10% above its 200-day with a 131.81% year and a +116.04 alpha — a deep pullback inside an intact, strongly working trend, not a breakdown, even though its RSI now sits below several names the desk is calling broken.

What Changed Since Prior Scan (2026-09-18)

  • $NVO broke on a sourced cause. RSI 41.3 → 27.5, price $43.24 → $38.17 (-8.49% on the week), on 2030 growth targets the market read as underwhelming (announced September 20) — the first clean corpus-sourced breakdown this scan has carried in weeks.
  • $NKTR fell into capitulation with no cause found. RSI 38.7 → 24.6, price $67.10 → $57.66; its long-test read flipped from passing to failing — year +14.2% → -3.26%, vs. its 200-day +2.7% → -11.9%. News file predates the move by three months.
  • $MRNA and $ILMN both crossed into the near-overbought band. MRNA: RSI 63.3 → 71.9, +25.06% on the week. ILMN: RSI 65.7 → 71.5, +11.55% on the week, but on only 0.62x average volume.
  • $BIIB jumped 13 RSI points with no driver on the desk's record. RSI 50.4 → 63.4, price $215.50 → $227.53 (+5.33%).
  • $AMGN exited the oversold band entirely. RSI 39.7 → 51.9, price $385.65 → $406.09 (+5.30%), continuing its recovery from two scans ago.
  • $PTGX and $BMRN both slid into the oversold band. PTGX: RSI 45.2 → 39.0, -2.90% on the week. BMRN: RSI 45.7 → 39.3, -3.89%. Both still pass the long test (positive years, above their 200-day) — pullbacks, not breakdowns.
  • $LEGN and $RARE both climbed out of oversold. LEGN: RSI 34.1 → 41.2, +8.53% on the week. RARE: RSI 28.1 → 32.6, +15.53% — but RARE is still 40.1% below its 200-day with a -47.61% year; the trend has not turned.
  • $IMVT dropped deeper into oversold inside an intact trend. RSI 36.1 → 28.5, -5.06% on the week — still 10% above its 200-day with a +131.81% year.
  • The capitulation band gained its first name since $RARE vacated it two scans ago. $NKTR (24.6) is now the sole occupant.
  • No stale bars this scan — every name carries a fresh 2026-09-23 close. Universe unchanged at 39 tickers.

How To Read The Board

RSI measures how stretched a name is over the last fourteen sessions: under 30 is oversold, over 70 near-overbought. The one-year return and the distance to the 200-day average separate a pullback from a breakdown, and this scan is a clean illustration of why that matters more than the RSI reading itself. $NVO and $IMVT both fell into oversold territory this week, but $NVO is now 17.1% below its 200-day with a -35.89% year (a genuine break, and one with a sourced cause) while $IMVT sits 10% above its 200-day with a +131.81% year (a deep pullback in a trend that has worked for a year). $NKTR's capitulation print looks the same as $NVO's on RSI alone but carries no established cause at all — the two names should not be read the same way just because their charts rhyme this week.

Tier Analysis

Capitulation (RSI < 25)

$NKTR (24.6) — new this scan, no established cause. Its long-test read flipped this week from passing to failing (now -11.9% below its 200-day with a -3.26% year).

Oversold (RSI 25-40)

$IONS (27.3), $NVO (27.5), $IMVT (28.5), $RARE (32.6), $COGT (33.6), $PTGX (39.0), $BMRN (39.3) — seven names. Only $IMVT (+131.81% year, +10% vs. its 200-day), $COGT (+142.74% year, though below its 200-day) and the newcomers $PTGX and $BMRN pass or partially pass the long test — those are pullbacks. $IONS, $NVO and $RARE fail both legs outright and are breakdowns; $NVO is the one with a sourced cause.

What To Watch Next

  • $NVO has a real, dated cause for its break — underwhelming 2030 growth targets announced September 20. The question now is whether the next print (or the China MASH approval already on the record) stabilizes the name above $36.93, its nearest support shelf, or whether the guidance disappointment keeps compounding.
  • $NKTR fell into capitulation with nothing on the desk's record explaining it; its news file predates the move by three months. Does a driver surface on the next pull, or does this stay the cut's one unexplained breakdown?
  • $MRNA and $ILMN are both now inside the near-overbought band the desk's own stretch screen flagged today. $ILMN's move is happening on only 0.62x average volume — worth watching whether volume confirms the breakout or the move fades on thin participation.
  • $BIIB jumped 13 RSI points on a 5.33% week with no news receipt covering it. Does a filing or transcript surface, or does this stay an unexplained gain inside an already-healthy trend?
  • $IMVT and $NVO both fell into oversold territory this week, but one is a deep pullback in a trend up 131.81% over the year and the other is a genuine, sourced breakdown. Watch whether the market keeps treating them differently or lumps them together on RSI alone.
