1. The Read
The AI-hardware cohort sold as one on Thursday, October 8, after OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was about $50 billion, not the $68 billion to $70 billion widely cited, while the S&P 500 fund slipped only 0.42%.
The report did the damage, not the macro. The Financial Times had the figure first and CNBC confirmed it. The gap is a booking choice: the higher number added sales routed through cloud partners, to match how Anthropic reports (CNBC). Bloomberg wrote that the worry "bled through to other artificial intelligence bets and chipmakers." The Nasdaq-100 fund fell 1.34% and the semiconductor fund 2.84%, but the equal-weight fund rose 0.6% to close above its 20-day average ($211.59), and 39 of 124 lanes closed at least 90% down. The month's rotation still runs out of nuclear fuel, neoclouds and nearline storage, with energy and Canadian oil emerging.
Rates, oil and credit did not confirm a risk-off day. The long-bond fund rose 0.93%, and CNBC reports options traders calling a bottom in the bond rout after a "bullet bid" 10-year auction. The 10-year was still 5.28% on October 7 (FRED); it has held above the 5% warning level since first crossing it on September 16. The oil fund gained 2.55% as Iran stepped up tanker attacks, Houthi missiles hit Riyadh for a second day and a hurricane threatened US Gulf output (CNBC; Semafor). The VIX closed at 15.41 and the high-yield spread was 3.09% on October 7 (FRED).
The neocloud stack went 1 for 10 at a −6.7% median, its second straight lane-wide decline. CNBC named CoreWeave among the stocks that sank on the report. It fell 7.77% to $81.58, under the $85.64 shelf named in the October 7 market brief and 11.9% under its 200-day on a −41.72% year: broken. Nebius fell 7.35% to $219.71 and closed on that brief's $219.70 shelf; 28.6% above its 200-day on a +80.09% year, it is a deep pullback in an intact trend. Hut 8 is the change: down 10.87% on 2.14 times volume, it closed 2% under its 200-day ($81.21) despite a +78.45% year, so its long trend is now under test. IREN, Cipher Digital, Galaxy, TeraWulf, Cerebras and Core Scientific fell 3.64% to 7.7%. Applied Digital rose 0.17% on 2.94 times volume a day after its beat, the only gain. News pulled October 8 carries no name-specific cause for the other eight, and the lane also sold on October 7, before the FT story: the report deepened a decline already under way.
The suppliers sold with the renters. Optical went 0 for 28 at −5.8%, memory 0 for 10 at −4.6%, network-switch vendors 0 for 13 and data-center power chips 0 for 12. Applied Optoelectronics (−13.58% on 2.42 times volume), MaxLinear (−12.72%) and AXT (−10.19%) led optical down. Most long trends held: Lumentum sits 37.9% above its 200-day and Micron 48.4% above its own on a +427.04% year. The breaks are Applied Optoelectronics, now 4.3% under its 200-day on a +228.68% year, and Western Digital, 2.8% under on a −14.97% week. Memory has a second item on file: StockAnalysis, citing Investopedia, says Samsung's preliminary results disappointed.
Money went to the other side of the tape. Government compute rose 6 for 6 at +5.5%, led by Science Applications (+6.25%) and Booz Allen (+6.09%); cause unknown, since news for most of the lane was not pulled for this move and Palantir's news carries nothing on it. Booz Allen and Leidos remain under their 200-days: a bounce. Tankers led the Iran-war lane (+4.2%, 6 of 7), Canadian oil and gas went 7 for 7 and consumer staples 9 for 10.
Space, quantum and crypto sold as blocks too. Space went 0 for 11 at −4.2%. Quantum went 1 for 13; Arqit fell 18.27% the day it posted preliminary full-year revenue of $975,000 to $1.0 million (Markets Insider). Crypto went 0 for 26; bitcoin lost 1.95% and holds 13.7% above its 200-day on a −33.81% year, and Grayscale's Zcash fund fell 12.25% after its first weekly outflow, $93.56 million (CryptoRank).
The movers. Haemonetics rose 17.46% on 4.91 times volume after an update to its CSL Plasma supply deal (StreetInsider) and a Citi upgrade to Buy with a $123 target (StocksToTrade); at RSI 76.6 it is extended. Argenx, a focus name and Wednesday's cleanest pullback, fell 11.83% on 8.92 times volume after ending a Phase 3 trial in Sjögren's disease, which overshadowed a Phase 2 win in celiac disease (Endpoints News). It closed 3.9% under its 200-day ($852.10) at RSI 24, on the $807.38 shelf: a long trend under test, with no entry before a reclaim and a report on October 22. PacBio fell 15.44% and Vita Coco rose 10.52%; nothing in October 8 news or the earnings calendar explains either move, so the causes are unknown.
After the bell
SpaceX agreed after the close to buy Grain Management's 800 MHz spectrum, up to 14 MHz of paired low-band airwaves, subject to FCC approval, price undisclosed (CNBC). Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile had closed up 1.27%, 1.63% and 2.18%; an after-hours intraday snapshot, not a close, had them 5.83%, 6.65% and 6.61% below those closes. SpaceX ($SPCX) traded 2.52% above its $160.57 close. The FCC votes October 29 on seeking comment on 482 MHz more for coverage from space (CNBC).
Watch Friday: Delta is scheduled to report before the open (a provider estimate), and the carriers get their first full session on the spectrum deal. FedEx reports Monday after the close; JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo on Tuesday, October 13; September CPI, ASML, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley on Wednesday, October 14; TSMC on October 15. The neocloud levels are Nebius's $219.70 shelf, Hut 8's 200-day ($81.21) and CoreWeave's broken $85.64 shelf. The S&P 500 fund needs two closes above $779.37 with the Nasdaq-100 fund above $748.65 and the VIX under 16; a high-yield spread at 3.50 or a VIX at 20 would turn a cohort selloff into a market one.

3. Pulse
- OpenAI's revenue is smaller than the street's number — OpenAI told investors it reached about $50 billion of annualized revenue at end-September; the $68 billion widely reported added partners' gross sales. A lower base makes debt-funded GPU buildouts harder to finance; Chris Camillo's gross-versus-net reading says the customer spending is real either way. Neoclouds ↓ · Optical ↓ · Memory ↓. CNBC, 2026-10-08. Change: none proposed.
- The Gulf takes fire from two sides — Iran stepped up tanker attacks in Hormuz, Houthi missiles hit Riyadh a second day, a hurricane threatens US Gulf output, and Treasury sanctioned 17 shadow-fleet tankers; Trump said the US will not attack Iran before the midterms and called talks "productive." More strikes lift tanker rates and fuel costs, with Delta reporting Friday. Tankers ↑ · Canadian oil ↑ · Airlines ↓. Semafor and CNBC, 2026-10-08. Change: none proposed.
- SpaceX goes after the carriers — SpaceX is buying 800 MHz low-band spectrum to make Starlink a US mobile carrier, pending FCC approval, and the three carriers traded more than 5% lower after hours. Approval, and the FCC's October 29 vote on more space spectrum, would pressure carrier valuations; AST SpaceMobile also traded lower after hours. Telecom carriers ↓ · SpaceX ↑. CNBC, 2026-10-08. Change: none proposed.
- A Fed voice for another hike — Musalem said rates may need to rise over the next six to nine months, and New York Fed researchers found tariffs added 2.9 points to inflation in 67 goods categories (CNBC). A hot September CPI on October 14 would push the 10-year further above 5%. Long bonds ↓ · Small caps ↓. Bloomberg, 2026-10-08. Change: none proposed.
- The AI-infrastructure IPO window narrows — Firmus Grid is expected to postpone its Australian IPO after a run of weak AI-infrastructure debuts. Neocloud and data-center developers fund growth with outside capital, so a closing window raises their cost of money. Neoclouds ↓ · AI credit ↓. Bloomberg, 2026-10-08. Change: none proposed.
Hatch: open — the selling stayed inside the AI-hardware cohort while the S&P 500 fund closed 0.98% under its high, the equal-weight fund rose, the VIX closed at 15.41 and the high-yield spread was 3.09% on October 7. Nothing in credit or volatility argues for tightening tonight; a VIX at 20 or a spread at 3.50 would.

6. The Wild & Whacky
- A beat, a cut and a rally. PepsiCo beat ($2.34 a share against $2.30), cut its full-year profit forecast (CNBC), and rose 3.73% on 2.48 times volume.
- Expedia math. Chris Camillo's answer to the $50 billion figure: Expedia booked $120 billion last year and reported $15 billion of revenue. "The $20B didn't disappear."
- To the penny. Nebius closed at $219.71, on top of the $219.70 shelf named the night before.
- Up in the session, down after it. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all closed higher, then traded more than 5% lower after hours on SpaceX's spectrum deal (intraday snapshot, not a close).
- The crowd didn't flinch. Polymarket's odds that NVIDIA ends the year as the largest company sat at 83%, up 3 points on the week, on a day CNBC listed it among the AI stocks that sank.
7. What I'd Tell a Friend
An AI-revenue scare hit every layer of the hardware stack while credit, volatility and the equal-weight index shrugged. Mark the broken levels; don't buy the drop yet.
- Nebius ($219.71): on the $219.70 shelf, 28.6% above its 200-day on a +80.09% year: the flag in an intact trend. The condition is a hold of the shelf, then closes back above the 50-day ($223.77) and 20-day ($229.54). Below the shelf, the 200-day ($170.82) is the next line.
- CoreWeave ($81.58): through the $85.64 shelf and 11.9% under its 200-day ($92.60). Out until it reclaims both; the next shelf is $77.92.
- Hut 8 ($79.59): 2% under its 200-day ($81.21) on a +78.45% year. A close back above that line is the repair; until then the trend is under test.
- Argenx ($818.63): under its 200-day ($852.10) at RSI 24, on the $807.38 shelf after the trial failure. No entry before a reclaim of the 200-day; the October 22 report is the next test.
- Vistra ($156.14): back inside the $155–$160 zone the October 6 Vistra deep dive set, above its 200-day ($154.74), after a 6.35% drop with no cause on file. The dive's buy is a hold there that turns up; a close under $149 is out.
- Small caps (Russell 2000 fund, $277.57): 0.2% above its 200-day ($276.94). A close under it puts the small-cap trend under test before CPI.
Today: nothing to buy at Thursday's prices. The one thing to watch: whether the selling reaches credit. A high-yield spread at 3.50 or a VIX at 20 would make this a market problem, not a cohort one.
