WFE / Test & Metrology Scan
WFE / Test & Metrology Scan
After two all-green Fridays, all 13 wafer-equipment, test and metrology names lost ground on the week, and the overbought readings are gone. The pullback stayed inside the trends. All 13 names still carry positive trailing-year alpha for a fourth straight scan, and 12 of 13 sit above their 20-day. Camtek and MKS Instruments lost their thin 200-day reclaims, and Amkor's gap widened from -2.2% to -14.7%. Entegris (RSI 65.2, -0.41% on the week) is now the strongest name, and ASML's October 14 report is the next dated test.
Numbers are the settled October 9 close for all 13 names (Friday), one week after the October 2 scan. No name in this book is missing a 200-day or trailing-year comparison. Teradyne, Kulicke & Soffa and Amkor also appear in the supply-chain book, and FormFactor and Onto in the optical book. Comparison baseline is the October 2 scan.
Quick Snapshot
| Signal | Reading |
|---|---|
| Overall | 🟡 0 of 13 up on the week; 9 of 13 green on Friday; 13 of 13 positive on trailing-year alpha; three names below their 200-day (from one); none at RSI 70 or higher (from two) |
| Leaders | Entegris (RSI 65.2, uptrend, -11.31% from its high), FormFactor (60.5), Axcelis (57.4), KLA (54.6), Applied Materials (54.6) |
| Laggards | Amkor (RSI 42.7, -14.7% vs its 200-day), MKS Instruments (48.1, back under its 200-day), Onto (51.1, -10.14% week), Lam Research (51.2) |
| The horizon check | Every name is positive on alpha (Camtek lowest at 17.92). Below the 200-day: Camtek (-2.6%), MKS (-3.8%), Amkor (-14.7%), all with positive years (33.93%, 97.01%, 60.37%): trends under test, not broken |
| Caveat | The week includes two dated cohort days. On October 6 the market brief counted deposition, test and packaging equipment each down about 3%, mostly on below-average volume, cause unknown. On October 8 the AI-hardware cohort sold after OpenAI's revenue report (CNBC), with Bloomberg noting the worry spread to chipmakers. Friday's moves have no cause on file. Applied Materials' news was last checked October 8, Lam's October 5, ASML's and MKS's October 6, and the rest earlier. No articles or posts dated October 9 are on file, and the October 9 events calendar lists only Delta's earnings and Oracle's dividend. |
What's Going On
The stretched short layer reset. A week ago Axcelis (73.6) and FormFactor (72.8) were overbought and ten names sat more than 12% above their 20-day. Today the highest RSI is Entegris at 65.2, and no name is more than 10% above its 20-day. The decline was broad but moderate: Amkor -12.32%, Teradyne -10.32%, Onto -10.14%, Axcelis -8.84%, Kulicke & Soffa -8.69% and Lam -8.24% were the largest. Entegris barely moved (-0.41%). Two cohort days carried the week. On October 6 the equipment lanes each fell about 3% with no cause on file (October 6 market brief). On October 8 chipmakers sold with the AI-hardware cohort after CNBC confirmed that OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was about $50 billion.
The long layer held. Every name keeps positive alpha, and trailing years run from 33.93% (Camtek) to 264.1% (FormFactor). The large tool-makers are deeper pullbacks inside intact trends than a week ago: KLA is -36.37% from its high (8.8% above its 200-day, 85.64% year), Applied Materials -31.45% (16.7% above, 130.15% year) and Lam -27.29% (14.2% above, 126.13% year). ASML is the closest large name to its high (-10.98%), basing 14% above its 200-day, with a 13.8-week base pivot at 1896.35.
The repair at the bottom unwound. Camtek (from +6.1% to -2.6% versus its 200-day) and MKS Instruments (from +2.6% to -3.8%) lost the thin reclaims noted on October 2. MKS is -28.24% over three months and -40.91% from its high on a 97.01% year. Amkor's gap widened from -2.2% to -14.7% after a -12.32% week; its year is 60.37% with alpha 44.36. All three are trends under test with positive years, not breakdowns. The 200-day is the line for each. Amkor's news was last checked September 25, so news was not pulled for its move.
What Changed Since Prior Scan
- Breadth: 0 of 13 up on the week, after 13 of 13 closed green on October 2 and September 25. Friday was 9 green, 4 red (KLA, Applied, Lam, Amkor).
- Names below their 200-day: three (CAMT, MKSI, AMKR) versus one (AMKR).
- Trailing-year alpha: still 13 of 13 positive, the fourth consecutive scan with a clean sweep.
- Overbought: none at RSI 70 or higher, versus two (ACLS, FORM). Lowest RSI is Amkor at 42.7, from 58.8.
- Leadership: Entegris (65.2) moved to the top; Axcelis cooled from 73.6 to 57.4 after an -8.84% week.
- Distance from highs grew for the large tool-makers: KLA from -32.69% to -36.37%, Applied from -26.99% to -31.45%, Lam from -20.75% to -27.29%.
How To Read The Board
The long layer is still as good as it gets: 13 of 13 names with positive alpha and 10 of 13 above their 200-day. The short layer went from stretched to neutral in one week, which is the flag stage of a trend, not the end of one. The pullbacks that matter are the large tool-makers (KLA, Applied, Lam) now 27% to 36% off their highs while still above their 200-days.
Camtek, MKS and Amkor are the three trend-under-test labels: under the 200-day with positive alpha. None of them is a buy signal until it reclaims the line.
Source limits: price and RSI against moving averages; this board has no order-backlog, wafer-equipment spending or earnings data. The desk's thesis rating covers only Kulicke & Soffa (intact but priced).
