Brief — Sep 2, 2026

Brief Ticker Tape

1. The Read

Two things moved this week that do not usually move together, and the market is pricing only one of them. Traders now put a quarter-point Federal Reserve hike in September at 59% on Polymarket, up 26 points in a week, while Kalshi's odds of a hold collapsed to 39%, down 29. That is a violent repricing toward tighter policy. The bond market half-agrees — the ten-year sits at 4.75% and the two-year at 4.34%, leaving the curve barely positive at 0.40% — but the volatility market does not agree at all. The VIX closed at 15.2, down 7% on the day and firmly in complacent territory, and credit stayed orderly with high-yield off 1.0% over the week and investment grade off 1.3%. Orderly credit alongside a hawkish repricing means the selling that has happened is positioning, not a credit event. The index tape reflects that split: the S&P proxy closed 765.16, up 0.44% with an RSI of 51.9 and a basing regime, while the Nasdaq proxy at 709.31 is up only 0.24% and reads weak-down at RSI 47.7. Beneath them, 405 names sit in pullback against 271 uptrends and 174 in outright collapse.

There is a reason to think the complacency is the mispricing rather than the hawkishness. Axios reported on September 2 that the United States struck two Iranian oil tankers — a real change of posture after months in which it enforced a naval blockade without attacking tankers outright. That story reached the desk through nine separate sources today, the widest convergence on the board, and it is the mechanism sitting under everything else on this page: crude in the nineties, a ten-year at 4.75%, and an energy complex pinned at its highs. A Congressional Research Service report already described Iranian attempts to control the Strait of Hormuz cutting traffic sharply, and OPEC output fell 27% in March with Brent moving from roughly $70 to $97. When the same conflict first broke out in March, equities fell more than 10%. This time the index is 1.8% from its high and the VIX is at 15.2.

Under a flat index, the rotation was violent. Cybersecurity was routed on good news: Palo Alto Networks fell 9.28% on 2.33 times normal volume after a quarter its own coverage described as a beat, dragging CrowdStrike down 5.42%, SentinelOne 4.60%, Fortinet 4.52% and Cloudflare 4.47%. When a whole group sells a beat, the news is not the problem — the positioning is. Energy went the other way and is now pinned at its highs: the sector fund closed at an RSI of 71.7 and 0.4% off its 52-week high, oil and gas exploration at RSI 70.2, and ConocoPhillips at RSI 70.8 and one-tenth of one percent from its high. Worth noting that the exploration fund managed that on only 0.63 times normal volume — the price is at the highs, the participation is thinning. The one lane that is both leading and still accelerating is food security, up 16.2 on 30-day relative strength with every member higher; fertilizer and agriculture names are running on real volume rather than thin froth, with CF Industries and Corteva alongside the leader, Nutrien ($NTR), at RSI 76.1. Everything else near the top of the leaderboard — hard assets, crypto, copper, biotech — is leading but decelerating.

The news pass explains the day's biggest moves rather than leaving them as price. Credo fell 20.04% on 6.92 times normal volume, and the reason is not a miss: Seeking Alpha and Yahoo Finance both report revenue of $479 million that beat expectations, with the selling driven by margin and guidance concerns. A beat that trades down 20% is a story about what was already priced in. Dell ran the other way, up 15.81% on 6.30 times volume, having reported earnings of $7.04 a share on revenue of $47 billion against a $44.84 billion consensus, per StreetInsider alongside the company's own results release. GitLab added 9.98% on revenue of $286.3 million, up 21% year over year, with net annual recurring revenue growth of 42% and full-year guidance lifted to roughly $1.13 billion. Then Broadcom reported after the close and made it three. Its own release puts fiscal third-quarter revenue at $29.6 billion, up 86% year over year, with non-GAAP earnings of $3.32 a share and AI semiconductor revenue up 221%, and it raised fourth-quarter revenue guidance to roughly $34.8 billion. The stock fell about 6.5% in extended trading anyway, which TheStreet and CNBC both attribute to a fourth-quarter outlook the market read as soft. Commentary relayed from the call has the chief executive saying demand for lasers is far surpassing industry supply even as Broadcom triples its own laser capacity — worth treating as second-hand until a transcript confirms it, but consistent with TrendForce's model of memory rising from 47% of cloud-provider capital spending this year to 68% next. The supply story in AI infrastructure is not softening. The stocks have simply stopped paying for it automatically.

Watch Thursday: Ciena reports before the bell, and it is the read that either corroborates the laser-supply tightness Broadcom described or leaves it a single company's claim. Snowflake, HPE, NetApp and C3.ai landed alongside Broadcom tonight and set up Thursday's software and storage tape. Further out, the September 16 Federal Reserve meeting is the event the crowd has repriced hardest toward — and a VIX at 15.2 says the options market has not repriced with it.
