Brief — Sep 29, 2026

Brief Ticker Tape

1. The Read

Tuesday, September 29 was flat for the S&P 500 and busy underneath it: chip-equipment stocks rose together, crude fell hard, the 30-year Treasury yield reached its highest level since 2002, and Micron's report after Wednesday's close now decides where the semiconductor trade goes next.

The index barely moved, but the rate and credit markets did. SPY slipped 0.18% to $764.20. It is still 6.2% above its 200-day average and up 15.15% over the year. Equal-weight RSP (−0.11%) and small-cap IWM (−0.36%) are the weaker legs. Both sit within 2% of their 200-day averages, with RSI readings near 31–32. Losers beat gainers 605 to 486. Bonds did the damage. TLT fell 0.50% on about twice its normal volume and sits 8.6% below its 200-day, and CNBC reported the 30-year yield at its highest since 2002. The 10-year stood at 5.24% as of Monday (FRED). The high-yield fund HYG fell 0.23% on 3.34 times normal volume, with RSI 21.1. That is heavy selling of the ETF. The measured high-yield spread was still 3.02% as of Monday, so this reads as rate pressure rather than a credit event, for now. Crude fell sharply: USO −4.44%, BNO −2.62%. Several reports point the same way. Kpler put flows through and around Hormuz back near 80% of prewar levels (via Semafor). The White House offered to lend producers up to 40 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (Semafor). The Saudi pipeline hit by a drone strike is ramping back up (CNBC, Monday). Bloomberg said cheaper oil eased energy-inflation fears. Gold rose (GLD +1.32%) but is still 8.0% below its 200-day. VIX closed at 16.04, the calmest reading in the desk's volatility gauge. Semafor also reported US consumer sentiment at its lowest since 2014.

The strength was concentrated in wafer-fab equipment. The equipment-and-metrology lane closed 13 for 13 up, with a +3.6% median. Etch equipment went 6 for 6. Applied Materials rose 5.19% to $512.01, Lam 2.99%, ASML 3.56%, Camtek 7.16% and Onto 5.52%. Each is above its 200-day, and Applied and Lam are up about 150% over the year. That makes this a thrust inside an intact trend, not a bounce off a low. The cause is unknown. News was pulled Wednesday for AMAT and LRCX and nothing covered the move; stock-events and the day's captures were checked too. Optical rose alongside (+3.1% median, 25 of 28 up; Lumentum +5.66%).

The AI-provider stack did not follow. The neocloud group closed at a −0.4% median. Nebius (+2.36%) was the exception: 43.4% above its 200-day and up 115.35% on the year, so its long trend is intact. The miner-conversions are the weak part. IREN, Core Scientific, Cipher, TeraWulf and Galaxy all lost 12–15% over the week and all trade below their 200-day averages. Hut 8 is the one miner still above it (16.7%, up 166.46% on the year). CoreWeave rose 1.01% but is 6.7% below its 200-day and down 29.86% on the year, so its long trend is under test. Wednesday's news pulls had no fresh item on any member. Supply-side names drifted up ahead of the print: Micron +1.05%, SanDisk +0.98% (still below the $1,740 close its watch call needs), Nvidia −0.72% at $227.21, 4.1% under its $237–$245 zone.

Three of the big movers have sourced causes and four do not. Iovance rose 31.48% on 5.6 times volume after raising 2026 revenue guidance to $410–$420 million from $350–$370 million (BioSpace, Yahoo Finance). Biotech funds were flat (IBB +0.16%), so this was company news, not a sector move. Carnival rose 13.41% on a record third quarter and a full-year EPS guide of $2.24 (GuruFocus, MarketBeat). Royal Caribbean (+7.45%) and Norwegian (+3.42%) followed, and travel went 8 for 9. Carnival is still 8.8% below its 200-day and down 14.59% on the year, so this is an early turn, not a repaired trend. AAR fell 7.25% on 6.1 times volume despite beating. The Motley Fool and StockStory tie the drop to the roughly $2.1 billion of new debt funding its MRO Holdings purchase. Ginkgo (+14.34%) and Bloom (+10.8%) have no attributed cause; news pulled Wednesday, stock-events checked. National Energy Services fell 11.14% on the same day oil did, but no report ties the two, so its cause is also unknown. It is still 6.5% above its 200-day and up 152.29% on the year: a deep pullback in an intact trend. Neogen fell 7.22% on 4.3 times volume. Its news pull has not been refreshed since June 21, so the cause is unknown rather than absent.

Space and drones were the day's worst lanes. Space fell 2.3% (3 of 11 up): Rocket Lab −3.45% and 14.2% below its 200-day, Intuitive Machines −4.28%, Redwire −4.20%, Firefly −5.18%. Drone-defense fell 1.2% (3 of 20 up). AeroVironment, Kratos and Axon all trade below their 200-day averages, and Unusual Machines (+4.09%) is the lone small-cap above it. No cause: those names' news was last pulled September 24–26, so it was not pulled for this move.

On the desk's calls: Zscaler held its September 25 flush low on closes and finished at $198.36, just above $198 on light volume. The watch stays live. Viasat closed at $69.09, below its $69.33 shelf, which invalidates the setup. GE Vernova is back inside $960–$1,010 at the lower edge, Bloom is 6.7% above its zone, and CF is just above its zone. No open call has four or five of its five signals lit; twelve have three.

News adds one story that is still unconfirmed in its details. Reuters reported on Anthropic's IPO prospectus, including steep losses and a warning of existential risks (via Semafor), and a Reddit post with 4,099 points printed figures it says come from that document. SEC EDGAR showed no public S-1 from Anthropic PBC as of Wednesday, so the prospectus is not public and any financials attributed to it are unverified. The confirmed record is a June confidential filing and a September 18 report of a November target. CNBC separately reports third-quarter IPO postponements accelerating after Oura pulled its deal. A secondhand post claims Michael Burry covered shorts on Micron, Nebius, CoreWeave and Nvidia. The same post says he replaced them with puts, so it does not describe a bullish turn. Social coverage was partial Tuesday: most followed X accounts and Discord returned nothing, so a thin social read here means missing data, not a quiet day.

Watch Wednesday: the PCE inflation release (CNBC), Jabil and Cal-Maine before the open, then Micron after the close. JPMorgan expects a beat-and-raise (per a Reddit link post), while 24/7 Wall St warns guidance may look weak. Micron sits at $1,065.08, 15.13% below its high and 59.2% above its 200-day. The printed read-through runs to SanDisk ($1,740), Nebius and CoreWeave. Separately, RSP holding its 200-day decides whether breadth weakness spreads.
