Brief — Sep 30, 2026

Brief Ticker Tape

1. The Read

The AI-compute landlords sold as a group on Wednesday, nine of ten neocloud names lower for a −2.0% median, hours before Micron reported a record quarter after the bell and said memory supply stays short through 2028.

The neocloud selling came before the print, so Micron did not cause it. Prices are September 30 settled closes unless marked. The Neoclouds lane closed 1.8 points under the S&P 500 with one of ten names up, and its median is −11.8% over the past week. The damage was concentrated: $CBRS −8.87% on 2.27× volume, now 54.02% off its high; $HUT −7.28%; $CIFR −4.12%; $APLD −4.09%. Neither large drop has a verified cause: news checked Wednesday evening carries nothing on either move, and no company event is on file. A Yahoo Finance summary ties Cerebras to execution and backlog worries, and an X post relays a SemiAnalysis claim that OpenAI's newest "Ultrafast" model runs on NVIDIA rather than Cerebras; both are attributed and unverified.

On the long windows the lane splits three ways. $NBIS (−0.62%) is +110.1% on the year and 41.9% above its 200-day: an intact trend, up 4.09% on the week. $HUT is a deep pullback inside an intact trend, +147.34% on the year and still 8.0% above its 200-day, the line to watch. $CRWV, the only gainer at +1.38%, is −36.34% on the year and 5.5% under its $92.14 200-day: broken until it reclaims that average. $IREN, $CORZ and $GLXY are down on the year and under their 200-days, so broken; $WULF, $CIFR and $APLD are up on the year but below the 200-day, so under test. An after-hours snapshot at 7:43 p.m. PT (not a close) showed no follow-through either way. Two unverified X posts carry demand news: a 50 MW US contract for Nebius from AIB Data Centers, and a $1.2 billion Vultr order for HPE-built AMD racks.

For the compute landlords, Micron's report is about cost and access more than demand. Per the Micron release and prepared remarks, fiscal Q4 revenue was $54.23 billion, $4.2 billion above the midpoint of its June guide; the December quarter is guided to $61.5 billion, with non-GAAP gross margin near 86.25%, down from 87.0%. Management said industry demand has strengthened, server units grow in the high teens, and per-server memory content is growing more slowly because supply is tight. On the call (third-party transcript) it said 2027 HBM prices are "much higher." Twenty-six take-or-pay agreements carry $32 billion of commitments, mostly cash deposits. The inference, which Micron did not state: a GPU's memory bill rises in 2027 and scarce supply goes first to buyers who prepay, which favors hyperscalers and well-funded labs over clouds renting capacity on borrowed money.

Supply side: memory waited, power and contract manufacturing sold. $MU closed flat at $1,065.11, +536.57% on the year and 58.2% above its 200-day, inside a 6.4-week base. The setup is a settled close above $1,108.72 on above-average volume; a close under $959.51 voids it, and a fiscal Q1 margin materially below 86.25% breaks the thesis. $SNDK (+0.59%) closed at $1,739.89, eleven cents under its $1,740.00 trigger; $RMBS rose 3.53% but sits 0.9% under its 200-day. Gas-turbine names closed 0 for 12 (−1.4% median), with $BE −4.90% and $VRT −2.83%. Contract manufacturers fell 2.8% at the median, led by $JBL −10.03% on 4.12× volume after an EPS beat (4.40 against a 4.08 consensus); the cause of the drop is unknown. $FORM rose 9.59%.

The macro backdrop is a rates shock under a cap-weighted index near its high. The 10-year Treasury yield was 5.26% on September 29 (FRED), up from 4.78% on September 4 and back to its June 2007 level; the real yield is 2.91%. The Fed raised rates a quarter point on September 16 (CNBC). Wednesday's core PCE came in at 3.0% against a 3.3% consensus (CNBC) and traders trimmed October hike bets (Bloomberg), yet $TLT still fell 0.58% to an RSI of 24.8. $SPY slipped 0.21% to $762.63, 2.15% from its high; $QQQ rose 0.25%. The average stock is weaker: equal-weight $RSP fell 0.71% to an RSI of 29.2, and 690 names fell against 421 that rose. Credit is orderly, with the high-yield spread at 3.08 on September 29.

Software re-rated for a day. Cloud SaaS closed 16 for 16 green at a +1.9% median and cybersecurity 10 of 11 at +1.6%, while the 30-day rank still calls SaaS lagging. No cause is on hand; the newest news on most of these names predates the move. Staples (0 of 10) and airlines (0 of 6) closed entirely red.

The calls. Thirteen desk calls have three of five signal families lit; none has more. $ZS met its condition, holding $188 and closing back over $198 at $199.42, but its year is −33.45%, so the long trend has not repaired. $AMAT, $LRCX and $MXL are 9–18% through their triggers, which makes them chases; $ILMN, $TWST and $P are stretched at RSIs above 73. $AKAM's watch is void at $106.35, under its $108.28 shelf, cause unknown. The $JBL and $NTR entry zones are retired; $AMZN, $GEV and $LLY keep their levels with stops untouched. $AAPL joined the steady climbers. $LQDA lost 57.19% on 18.31× volume; Liquidia filed an 8-K the same day, but its contents have not been reviewed, so the cause is unconfirmed.

Watch Thursday, October 1: Micron's first full session on the report, where a settled close above $1,108.72 on volume is the entry and a close under $959.51 voids it. Accenture is scheduled to report before the open, and its call wants a close above $197.63 from $183.37; Nike reports after the close. In the neoclouds, $HUT's $79.76 200-day and $NBIS's $219.70 shelf are the levels. $SPY sits between $779.37, the top of its 23-week base, and $756.86 below. The open question is whether Micron's supply story restarts the AI-hardware bid while the 10-year sits above 5%.
