Brief — Oct 1, 2026

Brief Ticker Tape

1. The Read

Thursday, October 1 split the AI trade: the suppliers (optics, memory, contract manufacturers, chip tools) closed up as one, the neocloud operators that buy from them went nowhere, and the 10-year Treasury yield touched a 24-year high before backing off.

The index was quiet; rates were not. $SPY rose 0.18% to $763.99 (RSI 49.2), 0.1% under its 20-day and 1.97% off its high; $QQQ added 0.31%. Equal weight is the weak leg: $RSP sits at RSI 33.8 and −3.95% over 30 days, though still 1.6% above its 200-day. Breadth leaned positive, 657 up and 459 down. The 10-year hit its highest level in 24 years intraday, then slid as France's fiscal trouble pushed money into Treasuries (Bloomberg and CNBC headlines); the last official reading is 5.29% for September 30, and the 5.00% trigger has been fired since September 16. The real yield is 2.93% against its 3.00% trigger, and high-yield spreads (3.12 points) remain under their 3.50 line, so the high-yield ETF's slide to RSI 17.3 reads as rates, not credit stress. Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman said she sees no urgent need for further action (Bloomberg). Tonight's rates and Fed read rests on Treasury data and wire headlines, not full articles.

Oil rose on supply headlines. Brent jumped more than 4% on a report of a third US carrier group (CNBC); The Kobeissi Letter credits Chinese refiners suspending exports (relayed). A UKMTO notice relayed on X reports the week's fifth tanker strike, inside the US-protected Hormuz lane. CNBC had Hormuz crude exports back at prewar levels on September 30; Eric Nuttall counts total exports still about 4 million barrels a day short. Refiners ($VLO +5.38%, $MPC +6.25%) and tankers ($DHT, $INSW, each a fraction of a percent from its 52-week high) do not price a return to normal.

The neocloud stack lagged its suppliers. The neocloud lane closed flat (−0.1% median) and is the fastest-fading former leader over 30 days. Sort it by trend, not by day. $NBIS (−1.53%, $232.28) is 22.54% off its high but 39.1% above its 200-day on a +100.92% year: a deep pullback in an intact trend. $HUT fell 14.95% on the week and stays 8% above its 200-day on a +136.41% year. $CRWV (+1.66%, $88.57) is the test: 3.9% under its 200-day (about $92.19), −35.37% on the year, with the $85.64 shelf beneath. $IREN, $APLD, $CORZ and $GLXY are down on the year and under their 200-days. $CBRS fell 4.58% (17.87% on the week); news checked Thursday showed quote pages only, cause unknown. Nebius's Inferize acquisition and a 50 MW AIB Data Centers contract are relayed on X, not filed; Nebius's Thursday 6-K is unread.

The suppliers closed as one. Data-center fiber and cabling rose 4.5% (14 of 15 up), optical supply chain 3.8% (26 of 28), co-packaged optics 3.3% (31 of 34), contract manufacturers 3.2% (7 of 7), etch 3.2% (6 of 6), NAND 2.8% (5 of 5). $COHR gained 10.9% to $319.19; $LITE rose 7.67% to $1,045.78, 3.68% from its high. Photonics accounts on X relayed a Morgan Stanley note (not in hand): curbs on Chinese transceivers would start at 3.2T, possibly in October, with a 65% US-content exemption, and the effect lands in laser pricing more than share. A second relay puts the 3.2T volume ramp in 2029: a pricing story, not a shipment one. $MU added 3.03% to $1,097.39 after its print (EPS $33.42 against $31.82 consensus); Micron's prepared remarks count 26 strategic customer agreements, over 35% of revenue through 2030, backed by $32 billion of commitments, mostly cash deposits. At 62% above its 200-day, MU needs a close over $1,108.72.

Two software rallies. $ACN jumped 15.78% to $212.30 on 5.43× volume: Accenture's release reported fourth-quarter revenue above the top of its guided range, with growth across every geography, industry group and type of work; EPS was $3.29 against $3.18. It cleared $197.63, the entry in the September 25 desk call, but at RSI 70 and −12.89% on the year this is the pop; the entry is a flag that holds the 200-day (about $196.29). $SNPS rose 12.78% (RSI 74.4); aggregator pages cite a raised long-range model, a $1 billion buyback and fiscal 2027 guidance above consensus, but Synopsys's own release is not in hand.

Corteva did not crash. The −83.81% print is a spin-off distribution: Corteva's 8-K says it completed the separation of its seed business into Vylor Inc. on October 1 by a dividend in kind to holders of record on September 24; crop protection continues as Corteva. Vylor began trading as VYLR ($69.75 on a Schwab quote after the close). The price history carries no adjustment yet, so any screen calling CTVA oversold or cheap is reading the distribution.

Biotech was the weak side. The IBB lane fell 1.9% (4 of 37 up), peptides 1.8% (0 of 10) and GLP-1 manufacturing 3.1% (0 of 7), the one lane whose day contradicts a leading 30-day rank; $IBB stays 13.9% above its 200-day. $NKTR fell 22.39% on 4.44× volume; Nektar filed an 8-K the same day, body unread, so the cause is unknown. $UMAC (−11.03%) and $WOLF (+10.81%): quote pages only, cause unknown. $AVGO closed at $343.64, under the $345.49 shelf that invalidates its September 25 desk call; cause unknown, with no news on file since September 25.

Nike printed after the bell. $NKE settled at $35.15 (−0.71%), reported EPS of $0.48 against $0.44, then traded at $32.25 on an after-hours Schwab quote. CNBC's headline cites disappointing sales and layoffs; the article is not in hand. At 28.1% under its 200-day on a −52.63% year, this is a broken trend, not a dip.

Watch Friday: the September jobs report, scheduled for the morning on the BLS calendar (no shutdown delay shows in the day's captures), lands on a 10-year that just touched a 24-year high; a real yield through 3.00% would fire the next rate trigger. Nike's after-hours price meets the open. Levels: CRWV's 200-day near $92.19, MU's $1,108.72 pivot, an ACN flag above $196.29. September CPI is scheduled for October 14; Vicor's print, expected around October 20, follows a September 30 guidance raise.
