1. The Read
On Tuesday, October 13, the S&P 500 fund closed flat at $778.01 while memory and chip-equipment stocks sold again on reports of Chinese memory progress, bank beats drew sellers, and a zero-coupon convertible took 12.77% off Cipher Digital.
The index held; the average stock did not. The S&P 500 fund slipped 0.01%, 0.46% under its 52-week high and still under the $779.37 line it must clear on two closes. The Nasdaq-100 fund fell 0.33% to $743.57, under its $748.65 leg, and the equal-weight fund rose 0.05% to $213.30, under its $217.12 line. Tracked names split 493 up and 697 down, and 10 of 125 lanes closed with at least 90% of their names lower.
Rates eased into Wednesday's CPI. The long-bond fund rose 0.41% as Treasury yields fell with energy prices (CNBC). The last FRED readings, from October 9, put the 10-year at 5.24% and the 2-year at 4.80%. The VIX closed at 15.27, the high-yield spread was 3.11% on October 12, and none of the twelve standing macro alarms fired. Economists expect September CPI to rise 0.6% on the month and 3.6% on the year (CNBC). The Fed is split ahead of it: Boston's Collins said rates will likely need to rise more before year-end (Bloomberg), while New York's Williams sees one more hike in 2026 and none in 2027 (CNBC).
Oil split between two wars. The US oil fund rose 1.36% and the Brent fund was flat (−0.03%), 1.06% under its high on a +125.49% year. CNBC had crude falling during the session on prospects of more Russian diesel; Bloomberg's note for October 14 has it rising on a flare-up of Middle East attacks, after Bloomberg, citing people with knowledge of the matter, reported a Houthi missile strike on Saudi Aramco's Dhahran headquarters. Energy closed 13 of 16 up at a +1.2% median and Canadian oil and gas 6 of 7 at +1.8%.
The neocloud stack fell 1.4% at the median, 2 of 10 up, and the damage was Cipher's. Cipher Digital dropped 12.77% to $11.34 on 3.87 times normal volume after launching $850 million of 0.00% convertible notes due 2032 (ChartExchange; StockMarketWatch); at 37.9% under its 200-day on a −44.25% year, it is broken. The siblings did not follow: Core Scientific rose 2.73%, Cerebras 1.68% and IREN closed unchanged. Nebius fell 1.52% to $206.86, under the $219.70 shelf but 19.8% above its 200-day on a +52.71% year: a deep pullback in an intact trend. Hut 8 ($83.61) holds only 2.3% above its $81.69 200-day on a +70.25% year; CoreWeave fell 3.05% to $77.81, 16% under its own on a −45.06% year. The read-through for the siblings is the price of money, not demand: Semafor reports lenders demanding high rates and a credit-rating provision on Volta's $5 billion debt deal for an Anthropic-backed project, and Anthropic is set to show updated financials to investors this week (CNBC). The stack ranks last of 125 lanes on the month.
Memory and chip equipment sold as one. Memory went 0 of 10 at −2.5%, DRAM 0 of 4 at −3.0% and deposition equipment 0 of 3 at −3.2%. CNBC tied the global chip rout to reports that China's CXMT has made progress on new memory designs, MarketWatch called it the chips' worst stretch in 16 months, and Bloomberg had emerging-market stocks at their worst day since July. Micron fell 3.62% to $953.19, under the $965.55 shelf and its $981.98 50-day; by the condition Monday's flagship set, that means waiting for a new base. At 34.5% above its 200-day on a +394.47% year, it is a deep pullback in an intact trend. Applied Materials fell 6.69% on 1.8 times volume and holds 6.3% above its 200-day. The semiconductor fund lost only 0.49% and closed above its $580.10 50-day.
Space and the alternative managers sold too. Space went 0 of 11 at −3.7%, led by AST SpaceMobile (−8.53%) on a MarketWatch report of an analyst warning that launch problems and SpaceX's wireless plans could delay its rollout. The alternative managers went 0 of 10 at −2.3%; no cause is on file. BioNTech fell 7.13% after its head-and-neck cancer vaccine missed the first of two endpoints (Endpoints News).
Banks opened earnings season with beats the market sold. Against the provider's consensus, Goldman's EPS beat by 30.0% and JPMorgan's missed by 3.2%; Goldman fell 0.23% and JPMorgan 0.86%. Citigroup beat and fell 5.6% on sequential declines in investment banking and trading (Barchart). UnitedHealth raised its 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to at least $20.50 (CNBC), opened at $397.63 against a $378.52 prior close and finished down 0.2% (StockAnalysis). Johnson & Johnson beat the provider's consensus, raised guidance and fell 5.73% on 2.41 times volume; no receipt names the cause. Nurix's $4.73 of EPS came from the Roche upfront payment and beat a consensus loss of about $0.60 (MarketBeat): not a miss.
On the board, Microsoft rose 0.43% to $543.45 on 1.07 times normal volume, a close over its $542.74 base pivot (the $537.22 level Monday's flagship set has since moved up with the base high) on the above-average volume that flagship asked for; at RSI 70.7 it is extended. Lilly ($1,166.51), Bloom Energy ($263.45) and Generac ($214.29) sit inside their zones, but Generac closed 0.5% under its 200-day.
Watch Wednesday: September CPI is scheduled before the open, and ASML, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, Progressive and BlackRock are scheduled to report before the bell (provider-estimated); TSMC is scheduled for Thursday. The S&P 500 fund confirms on two closes over $779.37 with the Nasdaq-100 fund above $748.65 and the VIX under 16; it de-risks on two closes under $756.86 with the equal-weight fund already under $217.12. In the lanes: Micron's next shelf is $921.02, Nebius needs $219.70 back, Hut 8 must hold $81.69 and the chip fund its $580.10 50-day. A hot print that lifts the VIX to 20 or the high-yield spread to 3.50 turns a chip rotation into a rate problem.

3. Pulse
- China's memory push hits the chip complex — China's CXMT has reportedly made progress on new memory designs, and the chip selloff spread from the US to Asian and European markets; MarketWatch calls it the chips' worst stretch in 16 months, and Bloomberg had emerging-market stocks at their worst day since July. A credible Chinese DRAM rival would cap the pricing power behind memory margins. Paradis, citing Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan, says about 95% of Tuesday's KOSPI selling was tech, with foreigners selling and Korean investors buying (single-source relay). Memory ↓ · Chip equipment ↓ · Korea ↓. CNBC, 2026-10-13. Change: none proposed.
- Houthis hit Aramco's headquarters — A Houthi missile attack hit Saudi Aramco's Dhahran headquarters and started a fire (Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter). Trump said the Houthis are "behaving very badly" and "I'll be there after the elections" (the Kobeissi Letter, single-source), and CNBC reports Iran fortifying nuclear sites ahead of possible US strikes after the midterms. Bloomberg's note for October 14 has oil rising on the flare-up; the Brent fund had closed flat (−0.03%), 1.06% under its high on a +125.49% year. More strikes on Saudi infrastructure would keep crude and tanker rates bid into CPI. Oil ↑ · Tankers ↑ · Airlines ↓. Bloomberg, 2026-10-13. Change: none proposed.
- A Russian diesel deal meets Republican resistance — CNBC had crude falling early as traders weighed more Russian diesel reaching world markets, and more Republican senators came out against Trump's diesel deal with Putin (CNBC). Bloomberg reports Russia's Black Sea oil loadings slowing, with ships moored twice as long as normal. A deal that frees Russian diesel would loosen fuel supply and press refining margins; its collapse keeps them tight. Refiners ↓ · Diesel ↓. CNBC, 2026-10-13. Change: none proposed.
- The Fed splits before a hot-looking CPI — Economists expect September CPI at +0.6% on the month and 3.6% on the year (CNBC; The Right Trader shows 3.6% against 3.4% prior). Collins says rates likely need to rise more before year-end (Bloomberg), Williams sees one more hike in 2026 and none in 2027 (CNBC), Goolsbee calls AI an inflation problem (Semafor), and the IMF warns bond yields could spike in a disorderly way (CNBC). The 10-year was 5.24% and the 2-year 4.80% on October 9 (FRED), and the long-bond fund rose 0.41% Tuesday; a hot print reverses that and presses long-duration and small-cap trades. Long bonds ↓ · Small caps ↓. Bloomberg and CNBC, 2026-10-13. Change: none proposed.
- AI financing gets dearer — Cipher Digital launched $850 million of 0.00% convertibles due 2032 with an exchange of its 2030 notes (ChartExchange; StockMarketWatch), SentinelOne launched $1.25 billion of convertibles due 2031 (Connor Bates on X, single-source), and Semafor reports lenders demanding high rates and a credit-rating provision on Volta's $5 billion debt deal for an Anthropic-backed project in Norway. Anthropic is set to show updated financials to investors this week (CNBC): strong numbers would ease the GPU hosts' financing case, weak ones would raise their cost of money again. Neoclouds ↓ · AI credit ↓. Semafor and CNBC, 2026-10-13. Change: none proposed.
Hatch: open — the selling stayed in chips, memory, space and one GPU host's balance sheet while the S&P 500 fund closed at $778.01 (−0.01%), 0.46% under its high, the Nasdaq-100 fund at $743.57 (−0.33%) and the equal-weight fund at $213.30 (+0.05%); the VIX closed at 15.27, the high-yield spread was 3.11% on October 12 and all twelve standing macro alarms read quiet. Nothing argues for tightening the night before CPI; a VIX at 20 or a spread at 3.50 would.

5. Sector Scorecard
Neoclouds — −1.4% median, 2 of 10 up, about −13.5% over seven days and last of 125 lanes on the month (RS −19.0). Cipher Digital −12.77% to $11.34 on 3.87 times volume after its $850 million zero-coupon convertible (ChartExchange; StockMarketWatch), 37.9% under its 200-day on a −44.25% year at RSI 26.9; Core Scientific +2.73% and Cerebras +1.68% rose, IREN closed unchanged, and Galaxy slipped 0.81% through a Citi upgrade to Buy with a $28 target (StockAnalysis; Benzinga). Nebius and Hut 8 are the only members above their 200-days; Cerebras is too young for one. CoreWeave (−3.05%) closed at $77.81, 16% under its 200-day on a −45.06% year and under the $77.92 shelf the October 8 market brief named next. AI bottlenecks — −0.7%, 76 of 199 up. Fermi rose 14.46% to $3.72 on 5.0 times volume, a bounce inside a collapse: −87.6% on the year, 45.7% under its 200-day, and pre-revenue (MarketBeat's second-quarter report shows no revenue). News pulled October 14 carries nothing dated to the move, and no stock event or capture covers it; the cause is unknown. Memory — −2.5%, 0 of 10, lagging (RS −13.0). Micron −3.62% through its shelf; Sandisk (−0.34%) and Seagate (−0.8%) barely moved; Western Digital (−1.61%) stays 6.7% under its 200-day on a +220.3% year. DRAM — −3.0%, 0 of 4, lagging (RS −6.0). Micron, SK hynix's US shares (−3.19%) and Rambus (−2.84%) led it down. HBM memory — −2.7%, 3 of 15, neutral (RS −0.1). Applied Materials (−6.69%), Cadence (−4.08%) and Onto (−3.72%) led; TSMC (+0.17%) and Qualcomm (+1.39%) rose. Lithography, deposition and advanced-packaging equipment — −2.5% (1 of 6), −3.2% (0 of 3) and −3.0% (1 of 6), all neutral on the month. Applied Materials fell 6.69% on 1.8 times volume and holds 6.3% above its 200-day on a +111.52% year; KLA (−3.22%) and Onto sit 2% above theirs. Applied Materials' news was last pulled before the session, so its name-specific cause is not on file; the lanes sold the day CNBC tied the chip rout to CXMT. The semiconductor fund (−0.49%) closed above its $580.10 50-day. EDA software — −2.0%, 0 of 5, fading. Cadence (−4.08%) sits 2.2% above its 200-day on a +0.59% year; Synopsys (−1.59%) holds 10.9% above. Space — −3.7%, 0 of 11, lagging (RS −3.5), −13.8% over seven days. AST SpaceMobile −8.53% the day MarketWatch reported an analyst warning that launch problems and SpaceX's wireless plans could delay its rollout; SpaceX −4.21% and Planet −5.01%. Of the members old enough for a 200-day, only Iridium and Globalstar hold above it, and both trade on deal terms. Alternative managers — −2.3%, 0 of 10. TPG −4.94%, KKR −4.75%, Blackstone −4.18%; all ten sit under their 200-days on negative years. No cause is on file: news for KKR, Blackstone and TPG was last pulled in September and Apollo's on October 7, no stock event falls on the date, and no capture covers the move. IBB lane — −2.4%, 3 of 37. BioNTech fell 7.13% on 2.16 times volume after its head-and-neck cancer vaccine missed the first of two endpoints (Endpoints News); it sits 9% under its 200-day. Peptide economy — −2.3%, 1 of 10. Viking (−5.96%) and Altimmune (−5.08%) led; Lilly (−1.36%) held inside its $1,160–$1,197 zone. Financials — −0.72% median with 39% of 23 names up, near the bottom of the month's ranking. Against the provider's EPS consensus, Goldman beat by 30.0% and fell 0.23%, JPMorgan missed by 3.2% and fell 0.86%, Citigroup beat and fell 5.6% (Barchart: investment banking and trading fell from the prior quarter), and Wells Fargo fell 3.1% on revenue short of estimates (StockAnalysis). Bloomberg says three of the biggest banks set records for lending income. Citi now sits 1.4% under its 200-day on a +29.58% year, a trend under test; Wells is 4.3% under on a +2.31% year. Bank of America fell 1.14% the day Treasury fined it $1.2 billion (CNBC), a session before its report. Healthcare — −0.6% median, 25% of 24 names up. UnitedHealth raised its 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to at least $20.50 from $19.50–$20.00 (CNBC), opened at $397.63 against a $378.52 prior close (StockAnalysis) and closed down 0.2% at $377.76. Johnson & Johnson beat the provider's consensus and raised guidance, then fell 5.73% on 2.41 times volume; GAAP EPS was $0.09 after one-time charges (BioSpace), and one post on X (Austin Lieberman, single-source) puts the new $11.10 adjusted-EPS midpoint under an $11.29 estimate, but no receipt names the cause. Johnson & Johnson still holds 2.1% above its 200-day on a +30.23% year. Nurix reported $673.1 million of revenue and $4.73 of EPS on the Roche upfront payment (company release; Sci-Tech Today), against a pre-print consensus loss of about $0.60 (MarketBeat, single aggregator): a beat, not the miss the calendar line shows. Cybersecurity — −0.3%, 2 of 11, still first on the month (RS +19.5) but fading. SentinelOne fell 6.43% on 3.16 times volume after launching $1.25 billion of convertible notes due 2031 (Connor Bates on X, single-source; its news was last pulled October 3); at 40.7% above its 200-day on a +40% year, it is a pullback in trend. Canadian oil and gas — +1.8%, 6 of 7, emerging (RS +1.4), +5.4% over seven days. Baytex +3.64%, Whitecap +3.32%, Tamarack Valley +3.06%. Energy — +1.2%, 13 of 16. CVR Energy +7.15% at RSI 81, 88.9% above its 200-day; BP +3.85%, First Solar +3.83%, the refiners fund +3.24%. The refiners' cause is unknown: CVR's news pulled Tuesday carries nothing on the move, and Par Pacific and PBF have no news file. Food security — +1.8%, 9 of 11, a second up day against a weak month (RS −13.0). ADM +3.46%, Bunge +3.2%, Deere +2.75%, Nutrien +2.47%. No cause on file: news pulled Tuesday for ADM, Bunge and CF carries nothing on the move, Deere's was last pulled October 9, and no capture covers it. Volume setups — +1.4%, 10 of 12, emerging (RS +0.3). Abercrombie +3.41%, ConocoPhillips +2.43%, Visa +1.74%. Chemicals — +1.0%, 9 of 9, neutral (RS −2.6). Air Products +1.79%, Dow +1.39%. No cause is on file: news for Linde, Air Products and Dow was last pulled before the move. Specialty gases — electronic gases +1.0% (3 of 3, leading) and process chemicals +0.7% (3 of 5, lagging); Linde, Air Products and Entegris carried both, while Albemarle (−0.87%) sits 36.6% under its 200-day. Autonomous vehicles — +0.9%, 14 of 21, against a lagging month (RS −2.3). Analog and auto chips carried it: Magna +2.75%, Texas Instruments +2.17%, Analog Devices +2.08%, GM +1.98%; Aurora fell 5.65%. No cause on file: Texas Instruments' news pull failed and Analog Devices' was last pulled October 6.

6. The Wild & Whacky
- A 0.00% coupon and a 12.77% haircut. Cipher Digital asked investors for $850 million at zero interest in exchange for the right to convert (ChartExchange), and the stock fell 12.77% on 3.87 times volume. SentinelOne launched $1.25 billion of convertibles the same morning (Connor Bates on X, single-source) and fell 6.43%.
- The miss outperformed the beats. JPMorgan missed the provider's EPS consensus and fell 0.86%. Citigroup beat by 7.9% and fell 5.6%, Johnson & Johnson beat the provider's consensus by 2.7% and fell 5.73%, and Domino's beat by 4.8% and fell 4.76% (Yahoo Finance points to modest US same-store sales and a cautious outlook).
- Green at the open, red by the close. UnitedHealth raised its 2026 outlook, opened at $397.63 against a $378.52 prior close, reversed within the first hour (StockAnalysis) and closed down 0.2%.
- Anthropic, by way of Binance. 21Shares launched an Anthropic synthetic exchange-traded product in Europe that gets its exposure through total-return swaps on a reference rate built from Binance's Anthropic perpetual futures (Eric Balchunas on X, single-source).
- A flat index over a 16% drawdown. CNBC's Mike Santoli: the S&P 500 sits just under a record while its median stock is in a 16% drawdown. Tuesday's version: the S&P 500 fund down 0.01%, 697 tracked names down and 493 up.
7. What I'd Tell a Friend
Chips, memory and the weakest GPU host's balance sheet sold while the index sat flat and credit, volatility and yields stayed calm into CPI. Mark the levels; buy nothing tonight.
- Micron ($953.19): through the $965.55 shelf and the $981.98 50-day, so the pullback read now waits for a new base; the next shelf is $921.02. The long trend holds, 34.5% above its 200-day on a +394.47% year. The open question is China: CNBC and MarketWatch tied the slide to CXMT's reported design progress.
- Nebius ($206.86): 19.8% above its $172.63 200-day on a +52.71% year, under the $219.70 shelf after a −17.21% week. The condition is a reclaim of the shelf, then closes back over the 50-day ($224.70) and 20-day ($229.24).
- Hut 8 ($83.61): 2.3% above its $81.69 200-day on a +70.25% year, the stack's thinnest intact trend. A close under that line puts it under test.
- Microsoft ($543.45): the base breakout now has volume behind it, but RSI 70.7 is extended. Buy a pullback that holds the $542.74 pivot; a close back under it returns the stock to its base.
- The zones: Lilly ($1,166.51) sits inside $1,160–$1,197 (stop $1,110, report provider-estimated for October 29); Bloom Energy ($263.45) inside $256–$273 (stop $240, report scheduled for October 22 after the close); Generac ($214.29) inside $212–$219 but 0.5% under its $215.31 200-day; Medtronic ($93.01) inside $92–$95 but still short of the $94.17 close its entry needs.
Not on the list: Cipher and the other miner conversions, under their 200-days on falling years; CoreWeave, under the $77.92 shelf; space; the quantum names; and the refiners, with CVR Energy at RSI 81.
Today: nothing to buy ahead of CPI. The one thing to watch: Wednesday's September CPI, expected at +0.6% on the month and 3.6% on the year (CNBC). With the 10-year at 5.24% (October 9), a hot print that lifts the VIX to 20 or the high-yield spread to 3.50 makes the chip selloff a rate problem; a cool one, followed by two S&P 500 fund closes over $779.37 with the Nasdaq-100 fund over $748.65, confirms the advance. Two closes under $756.86, with the equal-weight fund already under $217.12, would mark de-risking instead.

A desk call is an authored stance from a published report; entry and invalidation conditions are human-read, and the full ledger lives at /calls.
30d vs SPY is the raw name-vs-SPY move since the call — for trim/sell calls a NEGATIVE number means the call worked (the name fell after it).

𝕏Paradis (@ParadisLabs) — Paradis — GS and JPM: Tuesday's KOSPI selling was about 95% tech, foreign sellers against Korean dip-buyers $EWY · link- Paradis says Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan confirm that Tuesday's KOSPI selling was about 95% concentrated in tech, mainly SK hynix and Samsung, with foreign investors selling while Korean institutions and retail bought. For the memory case that reads as foreign de-risking, not local capitulation. The quoted post adds th…
𝕏M. V. Cunha (@mvcinvesting) — M. V. Cunha — Nebius reportedly signs an LOI for a big share of a planned 600 MW AI campus in Rotterdam $NBIS · link- M. V. Cunha relays a De Telegraaf report that Nebius signed a letter of intent for a significant share of VOLT's planned 600 MW Rotterdam campus, whose first 200 MW phase alone is put at €7 billion. It is one newspaper report and an LOI is not a contract, but it would extend Nebius's European pipeline at a time when t…

𝕏Serenity (@aleabitoreddit) — Serenity — Asian coverage of Hock Tan's DBS remarks has him defending OpenAI, not calling AI a casino $AVGO · link- Serenity collects Hong Kong Economic Journal and Business Times coverage of Broadcom CEO Hock Tan at the DBS conference. In that coverage Tan called OpenAI's roughly $50 billion run-rate "by itself, not that bad", rejected the idea that OpenAI is overvalued, aimed the casino line at investors selling on one data point…
𝕏Satya Nadella (@satyanadella) — Satya Nadella — Maia becomes Microsoft's primary inference system at multi-gigawatt scale starting next calendar year $MSFT · link- Microsoft's chief executive in his own words: Maia scales to multi-gigawatt deployments from next calendar year as the primary inference system for Microsoft's products, and Maia 300 claims 40% more tokens per watt than leading GPU systems. This is the source behind Monday's reports that Microsoft will lean more on it…
webBloomberg — asset managers are dumping long-duration Treasury futures, a sign of forced selling $TLT · link- Bloomberg reports asset managers offloading long-duration Treasury futures, which it reads as forced deleveraging with cash yields just off multiyear highs. That puts a positioning unwind under this week's long-end selloff, worth separating from a repricing of inflation or deficits when judging whether the move has fu…
webSemafor — a large tanker from the US to Asia now costs up to $77M to hire, from under $10M last year $FRO $DHT $BWET · link- Semafor reports charter rates for large crude tankers at a record, up to $77 million for a US-to-Asia crude voyage against less than $10 million a year ago, as more crude moves through a Hormuz under attack. Gupta's point is the physics: a 2 GHz satellite signal stops at the first wall, 800 MHz gets indoors and most phones already support it, which is why the carriers repriced t…
𝕏SemiAnalysis (@SemiAnalysis_) — SemiAnalysis — rising H100 rents break the depreciation curve lenders underwrite, with $7T of debt coming $CRWV $NBIS · link- SemiAnalysis opened a group on how GPU clusters get financed, starting from an odd fact: H100 rental prices rose on a chip lenders model as losing value, and that depreciation curve sets how much a neocloud can borrow against its fleet. 𝕏Chris Camillo (@ChrisCamillo) — Chris Camillo — OpenAI's $70B vs $50B is gross vs net, not lost demand · link- The FT reported that OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was near $50B at end-September.
