Geopolitical Risk

raw scan snapshot — prices as of scan date, not live 34 rows · screens, not recommendations prior scanresearch/scans/2026-06-26-geopolitical-risk.md

Data as-of 2026-07-06 close. Numbers read directly from geopolitical — no prose math. Prior scan: 2026-06-26-geopolitical-risk (2026-06-26).

The prior scan's clean divide — defense rising, oil capitulating, bonds the only working haven — has scrambled. TLT cooled from "working haven" (RSI 65.8) to a neutral RSI 47.1, while gold and silver, last scan's safe-haven failures, are both recovering (GLD RSI 35.8→45.4, SLV RSI 31.7→41.7) as the dollar unwinds (see 2026-07-07-macro-commodities.md). Energy is the one line item the reversal hasn't touched: HAL (RSI 26.7) and OIH (RSI 27.7) pushed deeper into oversold, and every oil name is still below RSI 40. Defense (RTX/NOC/GD/ITA/DFEN — full detail in 2026-07-07-defense-contractors.md) is now running hotter than the prior scan, not just holding.

Quick Snapshot

Signal Reading
Overall 🟡 Havens reshuffling — bonds cooling, gold/silver waking up; energy still capitulating
Biggest surprise TLT's haven trade lost steam (RSI 65.8→47.1) right as GLD/SLV turned up
Crisis loser Energy services — HAL (RSI 26.7) and OIH (RSI 27.7) worsened, not stabilized
Geopolitical winner Defense complex extended its bid further; RTX/NOC/GD all RSI 55-70

Oil Producers (Upstream)

Stock Price RSI 7D 30D vs SMA20 Trend 52wkHi
XOM $136.44 35.2 +0.5% -10.1% -3.5% weak-down -22.7%
CVX $168.10 34.1 0.0% -11.2% -5.1% down -21.7%
OXY $48.81 30.7 -2.7% -14.7% -7.2% down -27.6%
COP $103.58 32.4 -0.6% -12.9% -6.1% down -23.8%
DVN $40.36 33.0 -5.4% -9.8% -5.9% down -23.4%
EOG $129.39 40.4 -2.4% -7.7% -3.3% weak-down -14.8%

All six are still below RSI 41, golden-cross intact (pullback-in-uptrend, not breakdown, per the prior scan's read) but none has stabilized — every name's 30D drawdown is roughly the same magnitude or slightly worse than 10 sessions ago. EOG remains the relative-strength name (smallest drawdown, least oversold).

Energy Services (deepening, not bottoming)

Stock Price RSI 7D 30D vs SMA20 Trend 52wkHi
SLB $45.72 29.4 -3.5% -19.2% -9.1% weak-down -22.3%
HAL $33.00 26.7 -4.1% -18.5% -9.0% weak-down -24.3%

Both services names were already oversold at the prior scan (RSI 29.2/30.5) and have pushed further into oversold since (RSI 29.4/26.7) — this is the one part of the geopolitical book still deteriorating, not repairing. No floor signal yet.

Energy ETFs

Stock Price RSI 7D 30D vs SMA20 Trend 52wkHi
XLE $53.13 37.0 -1.3% -8.3% -3.2% weak-down -16.3%
OIH $359.85 27.7 -4.3% -16.3% -8.6% weak-down -21.7%
XOP $153.96 38.7 -1.3% -8.1% -2.4% weak-down -19.1%
USO $104.35 30.5 -2.8% -22.8% -10.2% weak-down -32.3%

OIH worsened the most (RSI 32.5→27.7). USO's 30D drawdown deepened further (-19.5%→-22.8%) since the prior scan — crude has not found a geopolitical floor despite the defense complex running hot.

Safe Havens (the reshuffle)

Stock Price RSI 7D 30D vs SMA20 Trend 52wkHi
TLT $85.45 47.1 -2.2% +1.4% -0.4% weak-up -7.3%
GLD $382.13 45.4 +2.4% -3.8% 0.0% strong-down -25.0%
SLV $56.11 41.7 +4.7% -8.9% -2.6% down -48.9%
UNG $11.71 52.9 +0.9% +3.0% +1.1% weak-up -31.2%

The haven rotation flipped. TLT was the prior scan's "the WORKING safe haven" at RSI 65.8, +2.8% 30D — it has since cooled to a neutral RSI 47.1 with 7D actually negative (-2.2%). Meanwhile GLD and SLV, last scan's explicit "not working" and "clearest safe-haven failure," are both up on the week as the dollar cools. This is a genuine handoff, not just noise — worth tracking whether gold reclaims SMA200 (currently below) as confirmation.

Defense Quick Look

Stock Price RSI 7D 30D Trend 52wkHi
ITA $250.78 69.9 +3.6% +10.4% strong-up -0.1%
PPA $182.44 66.1 +4.5% +7.6% strong-up -2.1%
DFEN $87.85 69.5 +10.7% +31.4% up -10.1%
RTX $201.37 69.7 +5.1% +12.7% up -6.1%
NOC $547.75 55.3 +9.9% +1.3% weak-up -29.2%
GD $376.88 69.0 +6.6% +11.1% strong-up -0.1%
LMT $538.00 55.9 +7.8% +3.5% weak-up -22.3%
LHX $301.27 50.2 +3.8% -0.3% strong-down -20.6%

Defense is running hotter than the prior scan across every name, including a dramatic reversal in NOC (was near-capitulation at RSI 30.9). See the full 2026-07-07-defense-contractors.md scan for the complete picture — including LEU's unverified single-day pop and the new TTMI addition already breaking down.

Promotion Candidates

  • GLD / SLV — the haven-rotation flip is the clearest new signal this scan; both are no-view/unrated and worth a fresh look now that the dollar headwind is easing.
  • EOG — the relative-strength name in oil producers; smallest drawdown of the six, worth tracking for a floor first.

Rollover Risks

  • TLT — the bond-haven trade cooled from RSI 65.8 to 47.1; if it breaks further, the "bonds are the working haven" thesis from the prior scan is dead.
  • HAL / OIH — both worsened into deeper oversold with no floor; do not treat the broader dollar-driven recovery elsewhere as a signal to buy here.
  • USO — 30D drawdown deepened to -22.8% (from -19.5%); no geopolitical catalyst has shown up to arrest the slide despite the defense-side bid staying strong.
