Risk went back on across the board, and it went on calmly. SPY closed +1.8% at 771.33 (+4.1% on the week), QQQ +3.4% (+7.2% on the week), IWM +1.9%, with 795 names up against 228 down across the tracked tape and a median move of +2.2%. Nothing in it looked like a squeeze — the VIX sat at 16.5 and credit stayed orderly, HYG +0.7% over seven days. What broke was the defensive trade. Oil fell hard, USO −5.2% on the day (still +10.95% over 30 days), as Aramco's 33%-profit print put supply back in the headline mix (Semafor and CNBC, August 4); silver extended (+2.6% today, +4.1% on the week) while gold sat flat; and odds of a September rate hike fell from almost 60% to 48% per the day's Fed coverage. A China-currency debate surfaced in seven separate sources on the day's wire — background noise today, worth a name-check because convergence that wide usually isn't idle.
The money went where the prints were. Palantir's Monday report paid off at +29.5% on 4.8× average volume — revenue $1.935B, up 93% year over year against a ~$1.812B consensus, with full-year guidance lifted to $8.15–8.16B (Wall Street Journal, August 4) and a Rule of 40 score of 155 (Invezz, August 4) — the loudest single move of the session. Today's slate then lit the entire supply chain underneath it: the optical board's median gained +9.0%, CPU-shortage names +8.1%, wafer-fab equipment +7.5%. Entegris jumped +15.5% after confirming its Q2 release (actuals still unposted), Teradyne +10.3% reclaimed its 50-day post-print, Leidos +10.0% on 2.1× volume, Arm +17.4%, and Kratos beat and raised — revenue $458.8M against a $410M street number, full-year organic growth guidance to roughly 18–23% (Wall St Engine, August 4). SpaceX's first print as a public company beat on both lines: $7.8B revenue against $6.81B expected, AI-compute revenue up 247% to $2.6B, backlog $47.5B, shares +9.4%. The casualty list was just as loud and far less explained — Bruker cratered −21.8% on 4.7× volume, Centuri −21.5% on 4.9×, Cipher Mining −15.7%, Rockwell −7.4%, all report-day tape with actuals still unconfirmed in the day's pulls. Those fills land as the filings post.
The names reporting tonight did not wait for their own numbers. Astera Labs closed +12.7% on 1.9× volume, AMD +7.0% at $518.58, Arista +3.0% to within 2.0% of its 52-week high — all in the session before the bell they report after. That is the risk stated plainly: the hardware rip has already been paid for. It also lands into a live argument about the product claims underneath it. An open letter to AMD from Ben Pouladian, circulated by @zephyr_z9 on X, points out that the Venice chip behind AMD's "beats Nvidia's Vera by 20%" claim carries no model number, no wattage and no price anywhere in AMD's own 132-page deck. On the SpaceX call the same day, Elon Musk said the company will build its AI compute exclusively on Nvidia's Vera architecture going forward.
Underneath the frenzy is leverage, and the clearest picture of it is still Korean. Citi counted more than 360,000 margin accounts forced into liquidation there, 62% of them under 35 (@unusual_whales, July 29). A country of 52 million carries roughly 14 million retail traders — the "ants" who turned the stock market into a housing fund once housing stopped being reachable (@gabriel_horwitz, July 31). And when SK hynix limit-upped 30% on the KOSPI's record +17.91% Friday, the 2x inverse product retail had crowded into lost close to 60% in a single session (@fintergirl, July 31). The same leverage that made the crash violent is now flattering the recovery. The SK hynix ADR crossed 151 today and closed $154.38 — on 0.62× average volume, which is exactly why that level reads provisional until it holds; the Korea ETF is +6.8% on the day, +13.0% on the week and still 22.5% below its high. An August 4 ETF.com piece makes the same case on this side of the Pacific: fund flows and positioning are amplifying the moves in crowded AI trades, in both directions.
Two claims from the week's reading are worth checking against prints, and one worth discounting. Check the financing math: hyperscalers have raised about $270bn of debt this year against $1.9T of already-contracted revenue — seven dollars of signed backlog per dollar borrowed, Microsoft at $627bn of remaining performance obligations, Oracle $553bn (+325% year over year), Google Cloud $460bn, AWS $364bn (@KawzInvests, August 4). That is a numeric answer to the AI-leverage headlines, and it is the same contracted demand the rotation read is picking up as money moving into government compute and cloud software. Check the memory mechanism: every HBM4 stack now carries a logic die at its base, and Samsung is the only memory maker with its own leading-edge foundry to build one (@MarkosAAIG citing Digitimes, August 4). Discount, for now, the flow read that has memory as the largest 30-day outflow lane while SanDisk ran +30.3% into its own print — Barron's called SanDisk July's biggest S&P 500 loser at −54%, and a trailing window is about to be tested by two NAND prints.
Watch the after-bell tape from AMD, Arista and Astera Labs — the direct read on whether today's rip was news or positioning, delivered into names that already moved. Then Wednesday is the heaviest print day of the week, 130 tracked names, led by SanDisk and Western Digital, where the only question the memory thesis actually has is whether a +69% NAND operating margin is a baseline or the cycle top; Nutrien, Lilly and Novo Nordisk print into the same session.

3. Focus List
IONQ / QBTS / QUBT / INFQ / XNDU / HQ / ARQQ / LAES — The quantum block prints across Wednesday and Thursday (IONQ and XNDU tomorrow), and ran again today — IONQ +7.4%, QBTS +9.3%. Watched as a coverage bucket, not owned as a thesis; several ran +15–30% this week into their own prints, which is exactly the shape not to chase.
The desk's takes cover 16 of 24 names; the rest show the mechanical tape state. 1 authored take matched no row (IONQ / QBTS / QUBT / INFQ / XNDU / HQ / ARQQ / LAES) — kept in the chapter text above.
4. Sector Scorecard
CPU-shortage supply chain — +8.1% today, +18.2% on the week, zero red names; the shortage trade is being repriced print by print, with Astera Labs marked up +12.7% before its own report. WFE / test & metrology — +7.5% today, +15.6% on the week, 0 of 14 red — the picks-and-shovels layer confirming what the optical board says. Canadian oil & gas / Iran-war traces — Worst boards of the day at −1.8% medians as crude broke; the war-premium tape keeps deflating.
The desk's assessments cover 5 of 68 lanes. 3 authored assessments matched no lane (cpu-shortage supply chain, wfe / test & metrology, canadian oil & gas / iran-war traces) — kept in the chapter text above.
5. The Wild & Whacky
- Wayfair closed +30.0% on 4.2× volume and Zebra +26.5% at an RSI of 85.1 on report-day tape — two of the largest moves in the entire book — and not one of the day's news or social pulls carried a number to explain either. The filings will explain them. Today, nothing on the wire does.
- A "BREAKING: manufacturing is booming" presidential post crossed the same afternoon September rate-hike odds fell twelve points. The tape believed the second thing.
- Kratos beat on both lines and raised full-year guidance, closed +5.41% — and is still 61.3% below its 52-week high. A print that good barely dented the hole.
- Palantir drew only about twice its average social volume on a +29.5% day. The loudest print of the week was, on the chatter meters, oddly quiet.
6. What I'd Tell a Friend
Don't chase a board that just printed +9% in a day; the optical and CPU lanes have earned a pullback entry, not a market order. The conditions worth writing down are all levels, not moods: Teradyne's reclaim only counts if 383 holds on the retest; Cerebras closed $227.15, clearing the 221.30 confirmation line, so the follow-through is the test, not the cross; the SK hynix ADR's move through 151 came on 0.62× average volume and needs a hold on real volume before it means anything; Nvidia sits ~1% above 209.81, Arm just reclaimed 270 with weak-down momentum, and Microsoft's 442 is still 11% below the tape. Everything that decides this week is already scheduled — AMD, Arista and Astera Labs tonight tell you whether the hardware rip was news or positioning, and SanDisk and Western Digital tomorrow answer whether a +69% NAND operating margin is a baseline or the top. If you want one thing to watch: Wednesday's 130-print wall, the widest single-day earnings exposure on the calendar this quarter.

A desk call is an authored stance from a published report; entry and invalidation conditions are human-read, and the full ledger lives at /calls.
30d vs SPY is the raw name-vs-SPY move since the call — for trim/sell calls a NEGATIVE number means the call worked (the name fell after it).
