1. The Read
Two things moved this week that do not usually move together, and the market is pricing only one of them. Traders now put a quarter-point Federal Reserve hike in September at 59% on Polymarket, up 26 points in a week, while Kalshi's odds of a hold collapsed to 39%, down 29. That is a violent repricing toward tighter policy. The bond market half-agrees — the ten-year sits at 4.75% and the two-year at 4.34%, leaving the curve barely positive at 0.40% — but the volatility market does not agree at all. The VIX closed at 15.2, down 7% on the day and firmly in complacent territory, and credit stayed orderly with high-yield off 1.0% over the week and investment grade off 1.3%. Orderly credit alongside a hawkish repricing means the selling that has happened is positioning, not a credit event. The index tape reflects that split: the S&P proxy closed 765.16, up 0.44% with an RSI of 51.9 and a basing regime, while the Nasdaq proxy at 709.31 is up only 0.24% and reads weak-down at RSI 47.7. Beneath them, 405 names sit in pullback against 271 uptrends and 174 in outright collapse.
There is a reason to think the complacency is the mispricing rather than the hawkishness. Axios reported on September 2 that the United States struck two Iranian oil tankers — a real change of posture after months in which it enforced a naval blockade without attacking tankers outright. That story reached the desk through nine separate sources today, the widest convergence on the board, and it is the mechanism sitting under everything else on this page: crude in the nineties, a ten-year at 4.75%, and an energy complex pinned at its highs. A Congressional Research Service report already described Iranian attempts to control the Strait of Hormuz cutting traffic sharply, and OPEC output fell 27% in March with Brent moving from roughly $70 to $97. When the same conflict first broke out in March, equities fell more than 10%. This time the index is 1.8% from its high and the VIX is at 15.2.
Under a flat index, the rotation was violent. Cybersecurity was routed on good news: Palo Alto Networks fell 9.28% on 2.33 times normal volume after a quarter its own coverage described as a beat, dragging CrowdStrike down 5.42%, SentinelOne 4.60%, Fortinet 4.52% and Cloudflare 4.47%. When a whole group sells a beat, the news is not the problem — the positioning is. Energy went the other way and is now pinned at its highs: the sector fund closed at an RSI of 71.7 and 0.4% off its 52-week high, oil and gas exploration at RSI 70.2, and ConocoPhillips at RSI 70.8 and one-tenth of one percent from its high. Worth noting that the exploration fund managed that on only 0.63 times normal volume — the price is at the highs, the participation is thinning. The one lane that is both leading and still accelerating is food security, up 16.2 on 30-day relative strength with every member higher; fertilizer and agriculture names are running on real volume rather than thin froth, with CF Industries and Corteva alongside the leader, Nutrien ($NTR), at RSI 76.1. Everything else near the top of the leaderboard — hard assets, crypto, copper, biotech — is leading but decelerating.
The news pass explains the day's biggest moves rather than leaving them as price. Credo fell 20.04% on 6.92 times normal volume, and the reason is not a miss: Seeking Alpha and Yahoo Finance both report revenue of $479 million that beat expectations, with the selling driven by margin and guidance concerns. A beat that trades down 20% is a story about what was already priced in. Dell ran the other way, up 15.81% on 6.30 times volume, having reported earnings of $7.04 a share on revenue of $47 billion against a $44.84 billion consensus, per StreetInsider alongside the company's own results release. GitLab added 9.98% on revenue of $286.3 million, up 21% year over year, with net annual recurring revenue growth of 42% and full-year guidance lifted to roughly $1.13 billion. Then Broadcom reported after the close and made it three. Its own release puts fiscal third-quarter revenue at $29.6 billion, up 86% year over year, with non-GAAP earnings of $3.32 a share and AI semiconductor revenue up 221%, and it raised fourth-quarter revenue guidance to roughly $34.8 billion. The stock fell about 6.5% in extended trading anyway, which TheStreet and CNBC both attribute to a fourth-quarter outlook the market read as soft. Commentary relayed from the call has the chief executive saying demand for lasers is far surpassing industry supply even as Broadcom triples its own laser capacity — worth treating as second-hand until a transcript confirms it, but consistent with TrendForce's model of memory rising from 47% of cloud-provider capital spending this year to 68% next. The supply story in AI infrastructure is not softening. The stocks have simply stopped paying for it automatically.
Watch Thursday: Ciena reports before the bell, and it is the read that either corroborates the laser-supply tightness Broadcom described or leaves it a single company's claim. Snowflake, HPE, NetApp and C3.ai landed alongside Broadcom tonight and set up Thursday's software and storage tape. Further out, the September 16 Federal Reserve meeting is the event the crowd has repriced hardest toward — and a VIX at 15.2 says the options market has not repriced with it.

3. Focus List
The quantum bucket — D-Wave, IonQ, Rigetti, Quantum Computing, SEALSQ and Xanadu all sit 15% to 30% below their 200-day averages in collapse regimes. After two-year gains ranging from 337% to 1,692%, this is the give-back phase, and revenue at these companies remains a rounding error.
The desk's takes cover 9 of 25 names; the rest show the mechanical tape state. 1 authored take matched no row (THE QUANTUM BUCKET) — kept in the chapter text above.
4. Sector Scorecard
Cybersecurity — Routed on a beat. Palo Alto down 9.28% on more than double normal volume with the whole group following. Behaviorally exhausted rather than structurally broken; the levels that would confirm real damage are still far below.
Hard assets and crypto — Still at the top of the leaderboard on 30-day strength, but both are decelerating sharply. Gold's breakdown relaxed rather than reversed: the metal closed 402.78, back above its 50-day but still 3.0% under the 200-day it would need to reclaim.
The AI provider stack — Rotating out, and the group is 42% to 52% off its highs. The split matters: Nebius and Hut 8 are still up 210.5% and 194.5% on the year and above their 200-days, which is a violent pullback in an intact trend. CoreWeave, down 13.3% on the year and 11.4% below its 200-day, is the one whose long trend actually cracked.

5. The Wild & Whacky
A trillion-dollar chipmaker's stock fell 20% for beating. Credo reported $479 million in revenue, ahead of expectations, and lost a fifth of its value on 6.92 times normal volume because of what the margins implied.
Eos Energy rose 18.75% while still in a strong-down trend. The single biggest percentage gain on the tracked tape belongs to a name whose 200-day average it is nowhere near.
A social-mention spike finally fired, and the answer was still no. Broadcom drew 17 mentions against a six-session baseline of three — the loudest reading in months — on a day it closed down 0.66%, hours before it reported a beat and fell another 6.5% after the bell.
Eight short candidates surfaced; none was shortable. Every one of them failed for the same reason: not a single name in a 2,642-row corpus carries a usable short-interest reading.
6. What I'd Tell a Friend
The market is holding two incompatible views and you should decide which one you believe. The crowd has moved hard toward a September rate hike — 59% and climbing — while the VIX sits at 15.2, which is what markets look like when nobody has hedged. Add a shooting war that escalated today, in the strait a fifth of the world's oil moves through, and the index sitting 1.8% off its high. One of those things is wrong. The rate question resolves on September 16; the other one resolves whenever it wants to.
Positioning matters more than news right now, and tonight gave three receipts for it. Palo Alto beat and fell 9.28%. Credo beat and fell 20.04%. Broadcom grew AI semiconductor revenue 221% year over year, raised guidance, and still fell about 6.5% after hours. In that environment, buying a good print is not a strategy, and chasing anything already extended is how the last two weeks punished people.
Where the evidence is cleanest: energy has a physical reason to be bid, with the Strait of Hormuz constrained, OPEC output down 27% since March, and the United States now reported to be striking Iranian tankers outright — but the exploration names are at their highs on thinning volume, so a pullback is the entry, not this. Food security is the only lane that is both leading and still accelerating, and it just lit the reopen condition on a thesis retired in May, which is worth a fresh look rather than a position. Biotech is producing individual breakouts on real volume while the sector measure cools.
The one thing to watch: Ciena reports Thursday before the open. Broadcom just said laser demand is far outrunning supply — Ciena is where that claim either gets confirmed by someone else or quietly stops being repeated.

30d vs SPY is the raw name-vs-SPY move since the call — for trim/sell calls a NEGATIVE number means the call worked (the name fell after it).

𝕏Paradis — TrendForce: memory chips to hit 68% of cloud-provider capex in 2027 $MU $SNDK · link- TrendForce now models DRAM and NAND rising from under half of hyperscaler spending in 2026 to more than two-thirds in 2027 — the poster notes even his own earlier estimate (~50%) undershot it. A concrete, sourced number for how fast memory is eating the AI-infrastructure budget.
𝕏Winston — the US and China drew almost the same fossil-fuel share of power in 2025 · link- IEA-sourced chart: the US and China landed at nearly the same fossil-fuel share of generation in 2025 (57% vs 58%) but via opposite fuels (US gas, China coal) - and the forecast has their fossil shares crossing by 2030. Useful grounding for how much gas-fired capacity the US grid still needs to add to keep up with AI…
𝕏Serenity — Broadcom's CEO: laser demand "far surpassing supply" $AVGO · link- Broadcom's own earnings-call commentary tonight: laser supply can't keep up with demand even as the company triples capacity, and FY28 revenue guidance (~$230B) came in well above the Street's ~$180B model. Direct read on how tight the optical-buildout capacity picture actually is, from the company selling into it.
𝕏IPO Newsroom — Nscale now touts $103B in contracted revenue ahead of its IPO · link- Per The Information (relayed here): Nscale's contracted-revenue backlog roughly doubled, from $51B to $103B, on the back of a single $45B Anthropic compute deal. A concrete marker of how much AI-lab demand is flowing into neocloud capacity ahead of the IPO wave.
𝕏Serenity — Nvidia told JPMorgan its demand could run 100%+ y/y unconstrained $NVDA · link- Nvidia's own investor-relations framing, relayed here: guidance of ~70% y/y growth (to ~$682B FY28) is a supply ceiling, not a demand ceiling — unconstrained demand implies over $800B. Useful number to have on hand for how much slack is left in the compute build-out even after two years of triple-digit growth.
𝕏Eric Nuttall — global oil inventories at all-time lows despite record SPR/floating-storage draws · link- Eric Nuttall's numbers on the physical oil market underneath tonight's energy strength: Middle East production down 7.4 million barrels/day versus February, Strait exports down at least 4 million barrels/day, and global inventories at record lows even after absorbing 400M+ barrels of SPR and floating-storage releases.
