Drone & Defense Scan
Drone & Defense Scan
This book stopped falling — 13 of 19 names gained RSI after 15 of 21 lost ground last week — but it sat out Friday's risk-on session entirely, with only four names green while optics and semiconductors went 27-for-28. AeroVironment led on both counts, up 9.02% on the week and 10.4 RSI points, the largest gain here. Red Cat went the other way and broke: -15.2% on the week, -31.75% on the month, RSI down to 31.1 on 3.7 times average volume. The horizon check has not improved with the RSI: 16 of the 18 names with a 200-day comparison sit below it, and 13 of those 18 carry a negative trailing-year alpha. This is a bounce inside a book that is still, on every long window, the weakest the desk tracks.
Numbers are the settled September 18 close for all 19 names; AVEX carries no 200-day or trailing-year comparison (too-young). The book is two names smaller than the September 11 edition — EOPSF and DRSHF left the nightly settled price run on September 12 as untradeable listings, a coverage decision rather than a trading signal. Friday was quarterly options expiry, so relative-volume readings are inflated. Comparison baseline is the September 11 scan.
Quick Snapshot
| Signal | Reading |
|---|---|
| Overall | 🟡 13 of 19 names gained RSI, reversing last week's broad decline — but only 4 of 19 closed green Friday while the rest of the tape rallied |
| Leaders | DPRO (RSI 56.9), AVAV (53.7, +10.4 RSI and +9.02% on the week), ESLT (51.6), UMAC (47.5) |
| Laggards | ITA (RSI 26.1, the book's lowest), PL (29.8, thesis rated broken), RCAT (31.1, -15.2% week), KRKNF (32.0) |
| The horizon check | 16 of 18 names with a 200-day reading sit below it — only UMAC (+28.8%) and MSI (+7.4%) are above. 13 of 18 carry a negative trailing-year alpha |
| Caveat | Friday volume is expiry-inflated; several news receipts in this book are weeks stale (KTOS August 15, ONDS September 4) |
What's Going On
The direction of travel flipped without the level changing. Thirteen of 19 names gained RSI this week against 15 of 21 losing last week, and the book's bottom names — Planet Labs (+6.3 RSI), Kraken Robotics (+3.4), Ondas (+3.4) — did most of the repairing. But the gains are off a very low base, and the week's most telling fact is what did not happen: while 27 of 28 optical names closed green on Friday, this book put only four names — Northrop Grumman, Teledyne, nLIGHT and RTX — in the green on the same session. Whatever rotated into semiconductors and photonics on Friday did not rotate into defense.
AeroVironment is the exception and the week's clearest mover: +9.02%, RSI 43.3 → 53.7, now 6.4% above its 20-day average. Its news receipt is September 15 and stale relative to this week's move, listing a Bank of America price-target cut to $185 from $225 with no date attached. The one dated item on file is REX Shares' September 14 drone-market roundup, which headlines AeroVironment's record backlog alongside a Canadian commitment to millions of drones — supporting context for the name's week, not a confirmed cause for this specific 9% move. The stock remains 22.7% below its 200-day, down 43.57% over the trailing year, with alpha of -58.58. A real bounce inside a chart that has not turned.
Red Cat is the week's breakdown. It fell 15.2% on the week and 4.93% on Friday alone, on 3.7 times average volume — the highest participation in the book — taking RSI from 40.1 to 31.1 and the month to -31.75%. Its news pull completed September 17 and returns archive and filings-aggregator pages, the newest substantive item a Q2 report showing revenue up 527% to $20.2 million; nothing on file is dated to this week's decline, and the desk's event record holds no Red Cat event this month. The move is unexplained, not uncaused.
One dated policy event landed in this book's neighborhood on Thursday. Bloomberg reported September 17 that the State Department notified Congress of a plan to sell Saudi Arabia up to 48 F-35 fighters in a first-time sale worth as much as $24.3 billion, and that the Pentagon and Lockheed Martin are moving to speed production of a new classified air-to-air missile. Lockheed was one of the handful of gainers here (+1.75% on the week) and Northrop another (+1.62%), but both finished the week below their 200-day, and nothing on file establishes the notification as the driver of either move.
What Changed Since September 11
- The book is two names smaller: EOPSF and DRSHF left the settled price run on September 12 as untradeable listings. One consequence worth naming — the desk's own drone-defense frame, last refreshed September 6, watches counter-drone contract flow to Axon, DRSHF and EOPSF; two of those three are no longer priced here, so that leg of the frame is now unobservable in this book.
- AVAV: RSI 43.3 → 53.7 (+10.4), the largest gain, on a +9.02% week.
- ESLT: RSI 44.7 → 51.6 (+6.9); NOC 37.6 → 44.4 (+6.8); PL 23.5 → 29.8 (+6.3); LMT 36.9 → 42.4 (+5.5).
- RCAT: RSI 40.1 → 31.1 (-9.0), the largest decline, on a -15.2% week and 3.7x average volume.
- MSI: RSI 50.2 → 44.8 (-5.4); ITA 28.5 → 26.1 (-2.4), now the lowest reading in the book; RTX 32.1 → 30.7 (-1.4); DPRO 58.3 → 56.9 (-1.4); AXON 35.9 → 35.5 (-0.4).
- The negative-alpha group held at 13 of the 18 names with trailing-year data, against 14 of 21 last week — a smaller book with the same shape, not an improving one.
- Five names carry positive trailing-year alpha: ESLT (+36.50), UMAC (+93.63), PL (+39.75), LASR (+12.68), RTX (+7.62). That group is unchanged from last week minus the two delisted-from-coverage names.
- The desk's September 6 drone frame proposed a cohort tell: speculative small-caps leading while AeroVironment and Kratos lag reads as froth, while all layers rising together reads as a real procurement cycle. This week ran the other way — AVAV led, Kratos gained 1.65%, the primes gained, and the speculative tail (RCAT -15.2%, PL -0.18%) lagged. On that frame's own test this is not froth. The frame predates the war's Saudi phase, so read it as a structural test, not a live trigger.
How To Read The Board
Separate the week from the trend, because they disagree in this book more than anywhere else the desk looks. The week is a bounce: RSI rose broadly, the worst names repaired the most, and AeroVironment produced a real 9% advance. The trend is unchanged: 16 of 18 names remain below their 200-day average, 13 of 18 still underperform the benchmark over the trailing year, and only Unusual Machines and Motorola Solutions hold above their 200-day at all.
Motorola deserves its own note, because its tags disagree with its horizon. It carries a strong-up trend label and an uptrend regime while its trailing year is -3.35% and its alpha is -18.36 — a chart that looks fine against a year that was not. Teledyne, Lockheed and the aerospace-and-defense fund show the same milder version: flat-to-positive headline returns with negative alpha behind them.
Planet Labs is the one place where the horizon math and the desk's own rating pull apart. It carries the second-lowest RSI here (29.8), sits 39.6% below its 200-day, and is rated broken by the desk — yet it is up 54.76% over the trailing year with alpha of +39.75. Treat the positive alpha as history, not reassurance: the thesis rating and the 200-day position are the more recent evidence.

Tier Analysis
Capitulation (RSI below 25): none, though the aerospace-and-defense fund at 26.1 sits just above the line and is the lowest reading in this book.
Oversold (RSI 25-40) — 7 names: ITA (26.1), PL (29.8, rated broken), RTX (30.7, positive alpha), RCAT (31.1, the week's breakdown), KRKNF (32.0), AXON (35.5, worst month), KTOS (37.7), LASR (38.7, rated intact), TDY (38.2). Only RTX and LASR in this group carry positive trailing-year alpha.
Neutral to strong (RSI 40+) — 10 names: DPRO (56.9), AVAV (53.7), ESLT (51.6), UMAC (47.5), MSI (44.8), NOC (44.4), AMPX (43.3), ONDS (42.9), AVEX (42.8, too-young), LMT (42.4). Of these, only ESLT and UMAC carry positive alpha.
Entry Zones
| Stock | Entry zone | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| AVAV | $150-160 (at or above the $150.31 20-day) | Reclaimed its 20-day this week on a 9.02% advance; the unresolved condition is the 22.7% gap to its 200-day, which no week of this size closes |
| RTXE | $194-202 (under the $202.46 20-day) | Sits essentially on its 200-day with positive trailing-year alpha and the lowest RSI among the positive-alpha names; next print scheduled October 20 |
| LASR | $39-41 | Rated intact by the desk with positive alpha, but 30.9% below its 200-day — the gap is the condition, not the RSI |
| ITA | $213-224 | The lowest reading here and a whole-sector proxy; its own trailing-year alpha is negative, so a low RSI on this fund is a sector condition, not a discount |
| RCAT, AXON | not a zone | Negative on the week, the month, the trailing year and alpha; both also below their 200-day |
Action Matrix
| Stock | Signal | Action | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| AVAV | 🟡 Bounce in a damaged chart | 🔍 Research | Largest gain in the book; 22.7% below its 200-day with alpha -58.58 |
| ESLT, UMAC | 🟢 Positive on the horizon | 🔒 Hold | The only two names with both RSI above 47 and positive alpha; UMAC is one of two above its 200-day |
| RTX, LASR | 🟡 Low RSI, positive alpha | 🔍 Watch | The pullback-shaped names in this book rather than the broken ones |
| MSI, TDY, LMT, NOC, ITA | 🟡 Headline steady, alpha negative | 🔍 Watch | Charts that read flat while trailing-year alpha is negative — the milder version of the book's problem |
| RCAT | 🔴 Broke this week | ❌ Don't buy | -15.2% week on 3.7x volume, -31.75% month, no cause on file |
| AXON, KTOS, KRKNF, AMPX, ONDS, DPRO | 🔴 Negative on every long window | ⚠️ Avoid | All below their 200-day with negative trailing-year alpha |
| PL | 🔴 Rated broken | ❌ Don't buy | Desk thesis broken; 39.6% below its 200-day despite a positive trailing year |
| AVEX | 🟡 Insufficient history | 🔍 Watch | Too-young; no 200-day or trailing-year check exists |
What To Watch Next
| Watch | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Whether this book joins a risk-on session | Four green names on Friday against 27 of 28 in optics is the week's sharpest divergence |
| Red Cat's next news pull or print | -15.2% on the week at the highest volume in the book with nothing dated on file; next scheduled print November 5 |
| Whether AeroVironment holds its reclaimed 20-day | The desk's own frame names exactly this as the only trend-shaped setup in the tier; the 200-day is 22.7% overhead |
| The October 20 prime cluster — Lockheed, Northrop and RTX are all scheduled to report that day | The first dated catalysts in this book, and the test of whether Saudi F-35 order flow shows up in guidance |
| Whether the negative-alpha count falls below 13 of 18 | It has not shrunk in two scans; RSI repair without alpha repair is the pattern to break |
| Axon's month | -30.66% over 30 days is the worst in the book, with its pull naming an undated $1.0 billion convertible note offering and no dated event |
The Gold
Key Discoveries
| Discovery | Implication |
|---|---|
| The book gained RSI broadly but skipped Friday's rally | Money rotating into AI hardware is not rotating into defense; the bounce here is internal repair, not sector demand |
| 16 of 18 names still below their 200-day | One good week did not change the trend picture; only UMAC and MSI hold above |
| The desk's own froth test came back negative | Primes and AeroVironment led while the speculative tail lagged — the inverse of the froth signature that frame defines |
Mistakes (Don't Repeat)
| Mistake | Lesson |
|---|---|
| Reading a positive trailing year as reassurance on Planet Labs | Up 54.76% on the year, 39.6% below its 200-day, rated broken — the old number is the least current evidence |
| Treating a policy headline as a cause | The Saudi F-35 notification is dated and real; that Lockheed rose the same week is not proof it is why |
Open Questions
- Why did Red Cat fall 15.2% on the highest volume in the book with no event on file?
- Does the loss of two counter-drone names from coverage leave the desk's own frame untestable, or is Axon enough?
- Can any name here repair alpha rather than just RSI before the October 20 prime prints?
