Calm Volatility and A Broken Gold Complex Arrive Together
Calm Volatility and A Broken Gold Complex Arrive Together
Market Signal
Two market market backdrop gauges changed state on the October 5 settled close. The volatility gauge moved from neutral to compressed. The VIX closed at 15.52, under the 16 level that marks calm, and the short-term VIX futures fund sits 58.34% under its 52-week high at RSI 39.1. The gold gauge moved from neutral to miners-lagging-metal. Over 30 days the gold-miners fund fell 11.93% against 6.69% for the bullion fund, and the miners-to-gold ratio's 30-day change reads −5.62.
What it means. Neither reading is a buy signal. Calm volatility sits alongside the rate shock rather than against it. The 10-year was 5.28% on October 2 (FRED), and the long-bond and high-yield funds closed at RSI 22.1 and 20.3. Yet the high-yield spread (3.10%) is under its 3.50 stress line. The market is repricing duration, not insuring against a crash, so stocks offer no fear discount. Gold is weaker than its steady day suggests (Bloomberg: gold steadied as the dollar firmed on European debt risks). Bullion is 8.8% under its 200-day, the miners 4% under theirs and silver 16.3%. The dollar fund closed 0.24% under its high at RSI 75.2 after the euro hit a 17-month low (CNBC). When miners fall faster than the metal, equity holders are leaving the leveraged expression first. The watch calls on the gold fund, the gold miners and the silver miners were invalidated on the same close.
What to watch. A VIX at or above 20, or a high-yield spread at 3.50, would turn a calm-volatility rate repricing into a credit event. For gold, the first condition for any entry is a close back above the 200-day ($416.07) that holds. Until then the miners' underperformance is the complex's trend, not a dip. A dollar fund breaking to a new high while gold stays under its 200-day keeps the anti-gold setup in force.
