1. The Read
The week's tape had one organizing fact: the market stopped paying for good news it already believed. TJX beat consensus EPS by 14.5% and closed at RSI 22.7 — the only sub-25 print on the board — while NVIDIA grew revenue 106% year over year, guided next quarter to $108 billion, and moved 1.29% all week. What got paid was forward guidance: Abercrombie & Fitch ran 36% on a beat-and-raise, Okta 23% on a beat plus five same-day price-target raises, Gap re-rated out of the turnaround list on raised guidance. A market that pays for the guide and sells the print is late in a re-rate, not early.
Underneath, the broad tape reaccelerated — QQQ up 8.27% over thirty days, SPY 5.47%, every major benchmark 7–9% above its 200-day — while the momentum ladder thinned 13% from the top and the parabolic tier nearly halved. The de-extension is broad but shallow: 395 tracked names sit in pullback against 21 breakouts, and the genuine damage stays narrow — utilities, bonds, housing, China. Two cracks are worth respect: gold slipped back below its 200-day average at $408.89 (the second flip across that line in two weeks, and through the $410 level one standing thesis names as its breakdown trigger), and the semiconductor-equipment cohort's collapse pocket grew from one name to five in a week. Grain was the one hard asset going vertical — wheat at RSI 78.9 within one percent of its 52-week high, no dated catalyst on file.
The news layer resolved most of the week's mysteries. PayPal's 12.8% slide traces to Forbes and Yahoo Finance reports that Advent and Stripe abandoned a reported $53 billion bid. Hormel's 10% drop was its own operating line — $110.9M of operating income against $217.1M the prior quarter. IREN's audited 10-K put year-end cash at $5.90B against the $7.6B preliminary figure cited in July; the filing governs. The one that still resists explanation is Moderna: a Reuters-reported COVID-vaccine IP settlement is a partial driver at best against a +153% month, reported at full size with the cause marked unknown.

3. Three Things
- TJX beat consensus EPS by 14.5% on August 19 and finished the week at RSI 22.7 — the only sub-25 reading anywhere on the board, and a 30-day return of -16.4%.
- Gold slipped back below its 200-day average: GLD closed $408.89, now -1.4% against its long-term line after sitting +2.4% above it a week ago — the second flip on the same indicator in two weeks, with the metal still +29.79% over the trailing year.
- The broad market reaccelerated anyway — QQQ +8.27% over 30 days, SPY +5.47%, every major benchmark 7-9% above its 200-day — while small caps alone diverged, IWM's momentum reading falling to 45.3 as its price ticked higher.
4. The Big Picture
The tape spent this week refusing to pay for good news. TJX reported above-plan comparable sales growth of 4% with pretax margin and diluted EPS both well above plan, beat consensus EPS by 14.5%, and closed the week in capitulation territory — a Jefferies downgrade to Hold landed August 28 (per TipRanks), nine sessions after the print, which explains a day and not a month. NVIDIA posted Q2 FY2027 revenue of $96.221B, up 106% year over year, beat on non-GAAP EPS at $2.22 against $2.09, guided Q3 to $108.0B and, per CNBC's August 26 coverage, told investors to expect roughly 70% revenue growth in fiscal 2028. The stock moved +1.29% on the week. Hormel nominally beat on the adjusted line and fell 10.3% the same day, because operating income of $110.9M against $217.1M the prior quarter told a different story than the headline. IREN filed a 10-K showing year-end cash of $5.90B against $564.5M a year earlier — and closed -15.4% on the week, below its 20-, 50- and 200-day averages.
The other half of the ledger paid handsomely, and the difference was guidance, not surprise. Abercrombie & Fitch beat by $2.18 a share on August 26, raised guidance August 27, and ran +36.16% on the week to RSI 77.7 — the tape's most extreme single-name move. Okta beat at $1.05 against $0.96 and drew five same-day price-target raises from Truist, Scotiabank, RBC, Needham and Oppenheimer (per TheFly, August 28), taking the stock +22.91%. Gap rose on an earnings beat and raised guidance (Investing.com, August 28), narrowing its drawdown to -20% off the 52-week high and exiting the turnaround list on genuine repair rather than a faded pop. Elastic spiked to new highs on what trade press (StocksToTrade, August 28) called a big earnings beat — though the print itself is not yet confirmed in the record, so the +55.04% month is reported without a verified driver behind it.
Underneath, the structure is a broad de-extension, not a break. The momentum ladder's total count contracted 13% — the parabolic tier nearly halved from 40 names to 26 — while the proven-winner pullback pool and the entry pool both held or grew. Across the tracked universe, 395 names sit in pullback against 21 in breakout and 11 parabolic. The AI capex chain is almost entirely in the pullback bucket rather than fresh extension: chips, chip equipment, optical, servers and grid power all cooling together while their one-year numbers stay enormous. Eight of eleven sectors remain above their 200-day with double-digit years. The genuine damage is narrow and old news — Utilities (-4.4% below its 200-day, +3.14% on the year, worst sector alpha at -16.73), the entire bond complex, housing, and China. Everything else that looks ugly this week looks ugly on a five-day chart and fine on a twelve-month one.

The mega-caps split by horizon, not by week. $GOOGL and $AAPL are the two names where the trailing year and the market-relative number both work; $MSFT's +31.49% month sits on a +0.76% year and an alpha of -19.11, which is a squeeze wearing a breakout's clothes. $NVDA's own reaction to a 106% revenue quarter was +1.29% — the trend is intact 11.1% above its 200-day, but the market has stopped paying up for the print. $TSLA remains the odd one out: a positive month on a flat year, still 13% under its long-term average.
The semis-and-storage block is the clearest pullback-in-an-intact-trend set on the board. $MU and $SNDK both fell on the week while sitting 58.5% and 53.0% above their 200-days on trailing-year gains of a size the tape rarely produces. $ARM is the one with an entry shape: the month flipped from -14.14% to +6.30%, it sits at RSI 40 with the $255-280 zone already broken beneath it, and the cushion above its 200-day has narrowed two weeks running from +23.4% to +19.9% — the flag stage, with a compressing margin worth watching rather than ignoring.
Healthcare and software are carrying the quality. $ARGX is 3.61% off its 52-week high with a +45.33% year; $ILMN is 44.2% above its 200-day on +117.39%; $NET holds a +40.49% year and a 35.9% cushion. $SHOP and $NTR both look strong on the chart with weaker market-relative numbers underneath — $SHOP's alpha1y is -11.85 despite an 18.37% month.
The quantum sleeve fell as one, and that is the whole story. $IONQ, $RGTI, $QBTS, $QUBT, $XNDU, $ARQQ and $LAES all posted negative weeks between -2.72% and -16.58%, every one of them below its 200-day, and $IONQ, $RGTI, $QUBT and $ARQQ carry negative trailing years on top. $INFQ is the only name above its 20-day. $HQ fell -23.22% on the week with no one-year history on file to judge it against. $PL and $QUBT both carry explicit broken-thesis flags — a business-quality call, not a price call. $OUST is the sleeve's exception on structure: it sits 16.6% above its 200-day with a +12.18% year even after stretching 17.4% below its 20-day.

7. Market Vibe
The strangest thing on the board is how little volatility costs. VIXY and VXX both sat pinned in collapse regime at RSI 31.7 and 32.1, down roughly 21.6% on the month and 48-49% on the year, 33% below their 200-days — and they did not budge while gold posted its sharpest reversal of the stretch, small caps diverged from the entire broad-market complex, and the whole crypto complex sold off 3-11% in a single session. No hedging bid showed up anywhere. That is either a genuine all-clear or the cheapest insurance nobody wanted, and this week gave no evidence for which.
Second oddity: the layer feeding the AI trade looks worse than the trade itself. Eleven of twelve names in the AI power and energy cohort trade below their 200-day averages, with BE the lone clean exception at +11.8% above its own. In the power-delivery semiconductor book — the chips that step voltage down from the grid to the die — every name carries a down or weak-down tag with readings between 32.8 and 41.7, and Vicor crossed below its 200-day this week (-6.2%, from +1.6% a week ago) despite a +260.16% year. Meanwhile the chips those systems feed sit 16-45% above their long-term averages. Either the delivery layer is a genuinely mispriced pullback or it is telling you something the compute layer hasn't priced yet.
Third: everything cooled except the food. Wheat closed at RSI 78.9 after a +10.27% week, soybeans at 75.3, corn at 74.7, and the broad agriculture fund at 72.8 — all four in breakout regime, all four within a percent of their 52-week highs, with wheat 24.1% above its 200-day. Wheat and soybeans both flipped from basing straight into breakout in the same session. Nothing dated on file explains the acceleration; news was pulled August 28 and the event record checked, and no catalyst covers it. In a week where gold reversed, silver drifted further below its own average, and copper cooled from extension, grain was the only hard asset going vertical.

Retail — two beats, opposite outcomes
Abercrombie & Fitch beat consensus EPS by $2.18 on August 26 and raised guidance August 27 (per MarketBeat and Ticker Report coverage), running +36.16% to RSI 77.7 and flipping straight from pullback into parabolic. TJX beat by 14.5% on August 19 with above-plan 4% comps and finished at RSI 22.7, a death cross now on the books and a trailing year that has turned negative at -1.46%. The one sourced negative is a Jefferies downgrade to Hold dated August 28 — real, but nine sessions after the print and no account of a -16.4% month. Walmart's weekly slide stabilized at -0.58%, but its month worsened to -9.74% as the earlier earnings drop rolled fully into the window.
Chip equipment — five collapse tags, four positive years
Camtek, Axcelis, BE Semiconductor and MKS Instruments all took fresh collapse tags alongside Amkor, taking the pocket from one name to five in a week. Every one of the five still carries positive market-relative performance and trailing-year gains between 41% and 138% — MKS at +137.87%, KLA at +96.35%, Lam Research at +190.04%. Only Amkor and Camtek sit more than 10% below their 200-day averages, and those two are the names where a chart problem could become a trend problem.
Cybersecurity — the one clean catalyst
Okta's +22.91% week traces to a confirmed August 26 beat at $1.05 against $0.96 and a same-day cluster of five price-target raises. CrowdStrike erased the prior week's -11.51% drop with a +13.8% bounce and now sits 55.5% above its 200-day on a +97.65% year. Zscaler is the exception that keeps the read honest: it joined the bounce while sitting just 4.8% above its 200-day on a -34.3% year.
Crypto — euphoria out, then a synchronized drop
Dogecoin's momentum reading collapsed from 95.7 — the most extreme print in the tracked window — to 52.8; XRP fell from 86.8 to 64.4; Cardano and Dogecoin both dropped back below their 200-days. Then the entire complex fell together on the final session: Bitcoin -3.67%, MicroStrategy -7.34%, Coinbase -6.33%, Riot -9.05%, CleanSpark -9.96%, Marathon -10.11%. News was pulled for MicroStrategy and Coinbase and returned no name-specific catalyst — consistent with a broad risk-off session, not a single-name event. Bitcoin's -28.57% trailing year remains the shallowest deficit in the coin tier by a wide margin, essentially unchanged.
Travel & leisure — the cruise trio completes
Royal Caribbean crossed below its 200-day this week, joining Carnival and Norwegian. All three now sit negative on the year with market-relative readings worse than -43. News was pulled for Royal Caribbean on August 28 and returned only generic quote pages with nothing on the move; the event record was checked and carries no catalyst. Airbnb (+45.20% on the year, 37.4% above its 200-day) and Expedia remain the sector's actual winners.
9. The Front Page
Perspective Dispatches
AI Power Bottleneck. The thesis — that electricity, not silicon, gates AI capex — is intact while its cohort is the weakest expression of it. Bloom Energy is the lone clean name at $210.77, 11.8% above its 200-day on a +284.62% year, with its month flipping back to +28.71%. CoreWeave, IREN, Applied Digital, Cipher and Core Scientific all trade 45-54% off their highs and below their 20-days.
AI Power Delivery. The 30% parasitic-loss frame gets a hard price test: every name in the book carries a down or weak-down tag with readings between 32.8 and 41.7. Vicor crossed below its 200-day this week at -6.2%, having been +1.6% above it, and Alpha & Omega deteriorated to -16.1% below its own on a year that has turned negative (-17.68%). The mechanism argument hasn't changed; the tape has.
Gulf Infrastructure Strike Scenario. Dormant and correctly so — the Ras Laffan helium disruption remains months-old background, not a live catalyst. Cheniere ($282.33, RSI 62.4) and Air Products ($308.09, RSI 57.9, -2.1% off its high) are both firm, which is what this scenario looks like when it isn't happening.
Risk-On Tech Rotation. Two of the thesis's own watch levels are live: Amazon closed $266.43, above the $265 it names, and Microsoft is well past RSI 65 at 73.1. But Alphabet at 49.3 and NVIDIA at 52.3 are nowhere near it, so the "all four extended together" confirmation the thesis wants has not arrived.
The Gold Anomaly. The thesis's own full-breakdown trigger tripped. It names GLD below $410 as the level; gold closed $408.89 and is now 1.4% below its 200-day, having been 2.4% above it a week ago. Miners are the stronger leg — GDX is 11.6% above its own 200-day on a +62.48% year — which is the opposite of the miners-lead-metal-lower pattern the thesis originally described.
AI Optical Supercycle. Wave 1 holds and the tail is cracking. Lumentum is $895.00 with a +48.6% month; Coherent, Ciena and Fabrinet all cooled to 37-44 readings. Two names took fresh collapse tags — LightPath at $11.23 and POET at $7.50 — but both carry strongly positive years, so those are violent pullbacks rather than confirmations. Three European constituents carry a bar dated August 21 and should not be read as confirmed unchanged.
US Energy Dominance. The best-performing standing thesis on the board. Every upstream and services name is positive on the year (+15.29% to +59.88%) and above its 200-day (+4.7% to +18.2%), with the sector fund +42.75% on the year. Schlumberger at RSI 70.9 is the only name left near overbought after the complex broadly cooled from 71-74 readings a week ago.
Memory Supercycle. Still producing the largest numbers on the desk and still cooling. Micron closed $932.86, 58.5% above its 200-day; Sandisk $1,484.98, 53.0% above; Seagate and Western Digital 43.1% and 25.7% above. Every one of them fell on the week and every trailing-year figure compressed from the prior read — extension unwinding, not a trend break.
SpaceX IPO Liquidity Event. The event is behind us; the cohort is what's left. The space sleeve is broadly damaged — Rocket Lab -11.3% on the week, AST SpaceMobile -15.4%, Intuitive Machines -16.0%, Planet Labs at RSI 32.1 with its thesis flagged broken — while the mega-caps the thesis expected to be drained as funding sources are up. That's the opposite of the predicted rotation.
Nearline HDD Storage. The oligopoly argument sits unchanged; the tape is soft. Seagate $829.76 and Western Digital $459.45 are both below their 20-days with weak-down tags, while Resonac at $100.70 is +33.4% on the month — the recording-media layer running hotter than the drive makers, the same split flagged in prior reads.
Livestock Disease. The protein leg cracked hard: Hormel fell to RSI 25.7 on a -16.4% month after its Q3 print — operating income of $110.9M against $217.1M the prior quarter — and Tyson dropped to 36.9, with Smithfield at 25.7 and -19.8% on the month. Elanco, the thesis's named pick, is quiet at $24.11 and flipped from pullback into basing.
Biotech Capital Cycle. The lab-tools-and-CRO leg is doing exactly what a funding-window re-rate looks like: Thermo Fisher $622.18 at RSI 66.2 and only 3.8% off its high, Danaher +10.0% on the month, Repligen +24.8%, IQVIA extended at 72.4. Twist is +65.4% and AbCellera +110.6% on the month — the AI-bio platform leg running far ahead of the picks-and-shovels leg.
Nuclear Fuel Cycle. The upstream-over-developers discipline is being vindicated by the downside. Cameco ($100.01) and the uranium names hold mid-range readings with 18-37% months, while the merchant power leg is the damage: Talen at RSI 32.4 and -6.3% on the month, Vistra 39.7, Constellation still in a downtrend with a negative year. Centrus fell -5.7% on the week and is -62.1% off its high, with a Q2 call held August 27 and no article on file characterizing the reaction.
CPU Shortage Supply Chain. Mixed and mostly cooling. Marvell fell -8.6% on the week into earnings-week volatility whose print remains unconfirmed in the record, while Credo is +31.2% on the month and ASE +21.4%. Amkor is the structural concern at 14.1% below its 200-day — the deepest gap in the packaging chain — though its year is still +94.16%.
China Structural Discount. Nothing resolved. The internet basket is uniformly soft: KraneShares -5.3% on the month with a -29.87% year and 14.2% below its 200-day, FXI -1.69% and now -3.6% below its own, Baidu -7.7%, JD -10.8%. The multiple-not-earnings argument survives another week without any evidence for a re-rate.
AI Capex Digestion. The thesis names Alphabet's 20-day reclaim near $363 as its bellwether for healthy rotation; Alphabet closed $346.59, below both that level and its own 20-day. Yet the rest of the basket reads risk-on — ServiceNow +12.6% on the week, Palantir +51.5% on the month, Oracle +28.1% — so the digestion is happening inside individual names rather than across the complex.
Physical AI / Robotics. The arms-dealer layer is in broad pullback and the moonshots are worse. Teradyne -5.5% on the week, Cognex 45.1, Rockwell 40.5 with a -6.2% month; Intuitive Surgical remains the ugliest quality name on the desk at 38.3% off its high, in collapse — a name whose fundamentals case has not been revisited against this chart. Symbotic is -54.6% off its high and Serve Robotics -73.0%.
Quantum Computing. The basket-first discipline earned its keep — every pure-play fell between -3.9% and -16.6% on the week, all below their 200-days, while the diversified fund held up best at $148.23 and RSI 47.0. No name has produced the higher-low-and-reclaim base the thesis requires before rotating from basket to single name.
AI Mega-IPO Liquidity Regime. The plumbing lens has nothing new to price: the SpaceX listing trades $141.50 at RSI 54.8, 37.3% off its high, with a +25.7% month. The next real test is whether any further mega-listing S-1 arrives, and none is on file.
Trump Policy Ticker Catalysts. A narrow event study still waiting for a clean case. Palantir is +51.5% on the month at RSI 69.3 and Dell +23.4% — both large moves, neither attributable to a dated direct post that survives the earnings and analyst confounds this study requires.
The Midterm Window. Two of four turn-confirming conditions are now live. SPY at RSI 56.6 with a +5.47% month clears the thesis's first trigger, and Consumer Discretionary's +5.02% month clears its offense-bid trigger. The small-cap-leads trigger fails — IWM's month is positive but its week is -1.39% — and the fear-disarms trigger fails at VIXY -2.97%. Nothing near the invalidation level, with SPY 1.29% off its high.
Drone Defense. The collapse pocket nearly doubled from six names to eleven, but only AeroVironment, Kratos and Red Cat carry the negative year and negative market-relative reading that would confirm it. Elbit and Ondas are down hard on the week while still +46.1% and +38.6% over twelve months. Motorola Solutions leads on momentum at 67.5 with a market-relative reading that doesn't back the week up.

Biotech owns the top of the ladder outright — four of the five most-extended names in the entire tracked universe are life-science businesses, and all five sit more than 112% above their long-term averages. The hottest reading anywhere is Crinetics at RSI 90, essentially at its 52-week high; Integer Holdings is next at 80. Twenty-five names in the extended tiers carry readings of 70 or higher — trim-and-tighten territory, not entries.
Deep Dive Spotlight
IREN — the balance sheet finally got audited, and the stock broke. The FY2026 10-K, filed August 27, reports revenue of $707.0M, an operating loss of $1.05B, a net loss of $702.6M, and diluted EPS of -$2.22. Year-end cash was $5.90B against $564.5M a year earlier, with operating cash flow of $2.10B against $3.00B of capex — a buildout running well ahead of the operating line and funded in the capital markets. The audited $5.90B cash figure differs materially from the $7.6B preliminary number the company cited in its July disclosure, which included restricted cash; the filing now governs. The delivery proof is real — Microsoft accepted the first of four 50MW halls at Childress, and NVIDIA granted the deployment Exemplar Cloud status. But the ARR target above $4B is a capacity-and-contract metric, not revenue, and the stock closed $35.45, -15.4% on the week, below its 20-, 50- and 200-day averages, 53.9% off its high. Conviction: medium — one execution link moved from promise to proof; revenue and funding remain prospective.
NVIDIA — the most extraordinary print of the week produced the least reaction. Q2 FY2027 revenue was $96.221B, up 106% year over year; non-GAAP EPS of $2.22 beat the $2.09 consensus; Q3 guidance came in at $108.0B ±2%; and per CNBC's August 26 coverage, management forecast roughly 70% revenue growth for fiscal 2028, far above estimates. The stock moved +1.29% on the week. The offsetting item was a gross-margin reset to a 71-72% trough. The thesis question has moved a level below the income statement: NVIDIA announced financing platforms with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR intended to mobilize more than $500B of third-party capital, paid roughly $2B for a Nebius pre-funded warrant, and holds a five-year right to buy up to 30M IREN shares at $70. That doesn't make the revenue fictitious — it makes end-user utilization and counterparty quality matter more than the shipment. Conviction: medium-high.
Moderna — the largest number on the desk and still no full explanation. Up +153.24% over 30 days and +463.91% over the trailing year, sitting 166.6% above its 200-day. Reuters reported on August 28 that shares rose after Moderna settled a COVID-19 vaccine technology legal battle — a plausible partial driver that does not account for the scale of a year-long re-rate. News was pulled August 28 and the event record checked, for the third week running, with nothing covering the full magnitude. The week itself closed -4.89%. Reported at full size, flagged as cause unknown.
Sector Rotation Radar
- AI infrastructure — Palantir is the most extended name at +51.46% on the month, but its year is only +17.82% with negative alpha; Marvell is the long-horizon leader at +180.49% and 45.7% above its 200-day.
- Biotech — Moderna's move keeps extending; Amgen and Thermo Fisher sit near fresh highs in breakout regimes with strong years and positive alpha.
- Cloud & SaaS — CrowdStrike and Okta both flipped from weak-down to strong-up in breakout regimes with years in the 80-98% range; Intuit stays the structurally broken name at -46.41%.
- Consumer — Crocs is a deep pullback inside an intact trend (+41.65% year); Hims deteriorated to a -34.63% year with its 200-day cushion down to +0.8%; Nike is a genuine breakdown at -49.18%.
- Crypto — the extremes cooled, the year didn't improve; Riot is the only name positive on both horizons, and its cushion is thin at +2.5%.
- Energy — GE Vernova and Bloom are deep pullbacks on strong years, but GE Vernova's cushion thinned sharply to +3.9% from +10.2%; Talen and Constellation are below their averages and getting worse.
- Mega-cap — Alphabet leads on the year (+63.76%, alpha +43.89), Apple is a clean second, Microsoft's year flipped barely positive on deeply negative alpha, NVIDIA is roughly market-matching.
- Memory — the entire cohort is a deep pullback inside a massively intact trend, with every extreme trailing-year figure compressing as the window rolls forward.
- Retail — all four tracked names flat-to-negative on the year with negative alpha; TJX flipped to a death cross and its year turned negative.
- Space — Iridium is the one clean leader; Rocket Lab, Intuitive Machines and AST all fell further below their 200-days, and AST's market-relative reading turned negative for the first time.
- Web & cloud — Akamai crossed below its 200-day and was downgraded to collapse; Cloudflare, Datadog and DigitalOcean remain intact pullbacks with compressing magnitudes.

Gold and Commodities — the haven cracked, the pantry ripped
GLD closed $408.89, RSI down 16.6 points to 54.6 — the single sharpest move on the macro board — and back below its 200-day at -1.4% after sitting +2.4% above it a week earlier. The level to watch is $414.79. Silver is worse structurally: +68.98% on the year yet now 7.7% below its own 200-day, deepening from -2.8%. Miners diverged from the metal and held up better, GDX 11.6% above its 200-day. Copper remains the strongest hard-asset trend anywhere at +92.93% on the year and 18.0% above its average. And the grain complex broke out on no dated catalyst — wheat, corn, soybeans and the broad agriculture fund all between RSI 72.8 and 78.9, all within a percent of their 52-week highs. The metal's final leg down has a reported candidate driver: Fed Chair Warsh said price stability is now the Fed's "predominant focus," and spot gold fell through $4,500 an ounce on the remarks (per The Kobeissi Letter's August 28 capture of the speech — reported, not independently verified). The grain move has no such candidate.
Insider Buying — a third week of nothing
The buying table is unchanged in both composition and dollar terms for a third straight week: Tesla +$219.9M, CRISPR +$28.1M, Asana +$8.7M, Intel +$2.4M, TSMC +$1.6M, with no fresh filing activity behind any of them. The golden-signal combination — oversold price plus insider buying — returns zero for a fourth straight week, because no name in the 59-stock universe closes below RSI 30; the closest is Eos Energy at 38.5, itself a broken structure at -54.14% on the year. Selling stayed frozen at the top: Amazon -$9.4B, NVIDIA -$3.3B, Eli Lilly -$3.1B, Palantir -$2.4B, Broadcom -$1.6B. Scale-driven, not a fresh tell.
Crypto — the melt-up gave it all back
Every coin's momentum reading fell sharply; Cardano and Dogecoin dropped back below their 200-days and were downgraded from parabolic to downtrend. Bitcoin closed $77,315.16 at RSI 68.9 with an unchanged -28.57% trailing year and an 11.6% cushion above its 200-day — still the least-damaged asset in the tier. MicroStrategy's 200-day gap narrowed sharply from -17.2% to -9.7% even as it fell -7.34% on the final session. Marathon's regime was downgraded to collapse and it flipped below its 200-day. The clearest single new signal is the synchronized final-session decline across coins, miners and equities together, checked against news receipts and found to have no name-specific cause; the same reported hawkish Fed commentary from Chair Warsh is the session's candidate macro driver for the risk unwind.
Regime Transitions — de-extension, with three exceptions
Thirty-three names changed state on the August 28 bar. The dominant flows were parabolic into pullback (AEM, GDX, MNTN, NUGT, U — five names, all cooling from extension) and uptrend into pullback (BFLY, CASY, ENVA, ZM). Three names went the other way into breakout: an international small-cap value fund, plus soybeans and wheat, which cross-confirms the grain move from an independent direction. Abercrombie was the only name promoted from pullback straight to parabolic, cross-confirming its earnings explosion. Four names dropped into collapse, three of them flagged inert; Camtek's is the one that matters, cross-confirming the chip-equipment deterioration.
Earnings Reaction Asymmetry — the week's real signal
Sort this week's prints by what the tape paid for them and the pattern is guidance, not surprise. Paid: Abercrombie (beat plus raise, +36.16%), Okta (beat plus five target raises, +22.91%), Gap (beat plus raised guidance, drawdown narrowed to -20%), Elastic (press-reported beat, +55.04% month — driver not yet confirmed in the record). Not paid: TJX (14.5% beat, RSI 22.7), Hormel (nominal adjusted beat, -10.3% on the day on a collapsing operating line), NVIDIA (106% revenue growth, +1.29% week, margin guide the offset), IREN (record cash, -15.4% week), Intuit (confirmed 12.3% beat, month cooled from +29.01% to +7.48%). A market that pays for forward guidance and sells backward-looking beats is a market in the late innings of a re-rate, not the early ones.

11. The Wild & Whacky
- A 14.5% earnings beat bought a capitulation print. TJX reported above-plan 4% comps with margin and EPS well above plan on August 19 and closed the week at RSI 22.7 — the board's only sub-25 reading — with a fresh death cross and a trailing year now negative at -1.46%. The one sourced negative, a Jefferies downgrade to Hold, landed August 28, nine sessions later.
- Moderna is up 464% over twelve months and nobody can fully say why. A Reuters piece dated August 28 covers a settled COVID-vaccine IP case — a partial fit at best, and the week itself closed -4.89%. News pulled August 28, event record checked, third week running with no source for the full magnitude.
- The AI trade's power layer is trading like the AI trade is over. Eleven of twelve AI power and energy names sit below their 200-day averages, and the entire power-delivery semiconductor book carries down tags with readings between 32.8 and 41.7 — while the chips they feed sit 16-45% above their own long-term lines.
- Wheat is the most overbought thing on the desk that isn't a biotech. RSI 78.9 after a +10.27% week, 24.1% above its 200-day, 0.67% from its 52-week high, and it flipped from basing straight to breakout alongside soybeans in a single session. No dated catalyst on file.
- NVIDIA grew revenue 106% and the stock shrugged. +1.29% on the week against a $108.0B next-quarter guide and a forecast of roughly 70% growth in fiscal 2028 (per CNBC, August 26). A gross-margin trough of 71-72% was apparently the more interesting number.
- The best-performing simulated book on the desk holds a position up 558%. A congressional-trade tracker's satellite-communications holding is up +558.5% — and the same book sits at +22.03% overall, 14.1 points behind a simple index hold over its own live window. Concentration cuts both ways.
- PayPal round-tripped an entire takeover. RSI fell from 69.1 to 35.0 as the stock dropped 12.83% on the week — CNBC reported shares soaring on a takeover report, then Forbes and Yahoo Finance reported on August 28 that Advent and Stripe abandoned a reported $53B bid. The month went from +10.88% to -8.04%, leaving it 4.6% above its 200-day on a year already at -23.41%.
- Volatility did not flinch at any of it. Both volatility products stayed pinned in collapse regime at RSI 31.7 and 32.1, roughly 33% below their 200-days, through gold's sharpest reversal of the stretch, a small-cap divergence, and a crypto complex down 3-11% in a single session.
12. Paper Trade Report Card
One fill on the entire desk this week — a leveraged index position closed on a time stop, not a thesis.
| Strategy | Total Value | Return | Highlight |
|---|---|---|---|
| yolo | $110,219.90 | +10.22% | 54% win rate over 62 trades; 7.7% cash, nearly fully deployed |
| claude-trader | $109,495.54 | +9.50% | 22 open positions, best Sharpe of the core books at 1.99 |
| bench-signals* | $62,932.84 | +6.71% | 67% win rate across 139 trades — the highest hit rate on the desk |
| momentum-trader | $99,462.63 | -0.54% | Seven days live, three positions, all modestly red |
| dip-buyer | $100,000.00 | 0.00% | Fully in cash, standing down, zero trades ever |
*Notional book — return is P&L divided by the sum of buy totals, with no starting-capital baseline.
Across the wider strategy field, the leader is a 13F-replication book at +65.59% with a beta of 1.74 — leverage showing up in the return column, not the risk column. Eleven strategies sit ahead of a mechanical dollar-cost-averaging benchmark and thirty-four sit behind it. The single fill this week came from a leveraged-index book closing its position after ten days flat, on the reasoning that decay eats sideways.
Danger zones. The signals book's Walmart position sits 0.84% above a -15% mechanical stop level at -14.28%, and its financials-sector position sits 1.02% below a +20% profit target at +18.79%. Neither row carries a populated stop or target field, so neither is confirmed armed — both are proximity flags, not triggers. Nike is the worst open position in the concentrated book at -10.39%; TJX at -13.07% and McDonald's at -11.48% round out the weak side of the signals book, all three consistent with the defensive-and-retail weakness across the tape.
13. What I'd Tell a Friend
The chip-equipment pullback is the cleanest quality-on-sale set on the board. KLA at RSI 35.9 on a +96.35% year, MKS at 33.9 on +137.87%, Lam at 44.4 on +190.04%, BE Semiconductor at 35.6 on +60.14% — all cooling hard on the short window while sitting above their 200-day averages. Condition: a reclaim of the 20-day with the momentum reading back over 50. Invalidation: a close below the 200-day — Amkor at -14.1% and Camtek are already there, and they are the tell for whether the rest follows.
Arm is the flag-stage setup, with a shrinking margin for error. $239.05 at RSI 40.0, the month flipped from -14.14% to +6.30%, +67.7% on the year, and the $255-280 zone already broken beneath it. Condition: a reclaim of that zone on expanding volume. Invalidation: a close below the $166.15 support shelf, or the 200-day cushion — already down from +23.4% to +19.9% across two weeks — closing to zero.
Energy services is the trend that cooled without breaking. Every upstream and services name is positive on the year and above its 200-day, and the complex came off overbought readings of 71-74 to the low 60s. Condition: buy pullbacks toward the 20-day rather than the overbought print — Schlumberger at RSI 70.9 is the only name left with no room. Invalidation: the sector fund losing its 200-day, currently 15.3% below price.
Gold is a level question, not a view question. $408.89 with the 200-day at $414.79 and two flips across the same line in two weeks. Condition: a reclaim of $414.79 that holds a full week before treating the trend as repaired. If it doesn't: the miners are the better expression — GDX is 11.6% above its own 200-day on a +62.48% year while the metal sits below its.
Do not chase the extended repair rallies. Salesforce at RSI 80.8 is flat on the year (+0.58%). Microsoft at 73.1 has a +0.76% year and -19.11 alpha. Veeva at 74.9 has a +1.6% year and -18.3 alpha. Atlassian at 79.1 is within 2.33% of its high on a catalyst three weeks old with nothing fresh in the record. These are squeezes back to even, not confirmed leadership, and the size of the month is the reason to wait rather than the reason to buy.
What To Watch Next
Whether TJX's beat-and-price disconnect resolves or the capitulation deepens; whether Broadcom's 200-day test — flat at -0.2% for a third straight week — finally breaks either way; whether small caps' divergence from the broad bounce widens into a real problem; whether gold flips its 200-day a third time; and whether the grain breakout finds a catalyst or fades as fast as it arrived.
