Brief — Oct 9, 2026

Brief Ticker Tape

1. The Read

In the week to Friday, October 9, the S&P 500 fund finished 0.39% under its high while AI money moved out of the chipmakers and into software, security and running power plants, and on Friday SpaceX's spectrum deal took 10.14% to 13.27% off the three big US carriers.

The index waited; the bond market did not

How the week ran. Monday the Nasdaq-100 set a record while Vaxcyte's Phase 3 win lifted biotech and Brazil's fund jumped on the first-round election result (Bloomberg; Endpoints News; CNBC). Tuesday the S&P 500 posted its first record close since August (Bloomberg), carried by nuclear power and AI networking. Wednesday's Fed minutes leaned hawkish, and the neocloud, crypto, quantum and nuclear lanes sold as blocks. Thursday OpenAI's smaller revenue figure hit every layer of AI hardware, and SpaceX announced its spectrum purchase after the bell. Friday the carriers paid for it while software, copper and Chinese stocks led.

The S&P 500 fund is one confirmation short of a clean advance. It closed Friday at $778.57, up 1.16% on the week and 7.7% above its 200-day on a +16% year. The confirmation needs two closes above $779.37 with the Nasdaq-100 fund above $748.65 and the VIX under 16. The last two legs hold (the Nasdaq-100 fund at $751.27, the VIX at 14.84); the first does not, after Tuesday's $779.09 and Friday's close both stopped just short. Bloomberg had stocks ending the week "inches away from record highs" as AI-bubble fears faded.

Breadth repaired; small caps did not. The equal-weight fund rose 1.58% on the week against the Nasdaq-100 fund's 0.23%, and its RSI is back to 50.8 from the oversold mid-30s of October 2. Friday was broad: 821 names rose and 393 fell. Two regime gauges changed state on the close. Volatility moved to compressed, with the VIX at 14.84 and the VIX futures fund 33% under its 200-day. Broad breadth moved from deteriorating to mixed: 66.7% of the core index and sector funds sit above their 20-day averages, but only 40% above their 50-day. The Russell 2000 fund is the holdout, down 0.92% on the week at RSI 38.5 and 0.7% above a $277.06 200-day. JPMorgan data relayed on X puts the share of S&P 500 members that beat the index over three years at 30%, the lowest since 1991.

Rates stayed above the line, and some of the selling looks forced. The 10-year was 5.22% on October 8 (FRED), down from 5.31% on October 5 and above 5% since mid-September. The Fed's minutes on October 7 showed all 19 officials behind September's hike (Bloomberg). On Friday Bloomberg reported asset managers dumping long-duration Treasury futures, which it reads as forced deleveraging, and wrote that the rate shock is spreading beneath the AI-led index. The long-bond fund sits at RSI 34.8, 8.4% under its 200-day on a −12.56% year. The dollar fund closed at RSI 69.9, 0.21% under its high, on what Bloomberg called the dollar's longest winning streak since early 2025. Credit moved but did not break: the high-yield spread was 3.15% on October 8, up from 3.09% the day before and under its 3.50 stress line. CNBC's Friday read on junk bonds was "flashing yellow." Polymarket prices a 2026 recession at 7%, down a point on the week.

Inside AI: the bid left the hardware

Thursday's OpenAI figure split the AI trade. OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was about $50 billion at end-September, against the $68 billion to $70 billion widely cited (Financial Times, confirmed by CNBC, October 8). The semiconductor fund fell 4.32% on the week; Arm fell 13.4%, Intel 12.26% and SK hynix's US shares 13.38%. None of it is a broken trend. The chip fund sits 19.2% above its 200-day on a +75.32% year, and Arm 21% above its own on +56.03%: deep pullbacks inside intact trends. CNBC reported bears adding large positions against the chip group on Friday through Micron and NVIDIA trades, and options traders the most braced for a tech pullback since early summer.

Software and security took the money. Zscaler rose 18.89% on the week and Okta 9.76%. All four cloud-software funds closed above ranges they had held for about nine weeks, and the WCLD cloud fund finished at its 52-week high. Friday was the broadest day: web-cloud names went 9 for 9 at a +6.0% median and cybersecurity 11 for 11 at +4.5%. Three moves carry dated causes. Fastly rose 15.86% on an Oppenheimer upgrade to Outperform with a $35 target (Yahoo Finance). Akamai rose 6% on a seven-year cloud agreement with Anthropic (Mitrade). Datadog rose 7.11% after CIBC raised its target to $315 (StockAnalysis). News pulled Friday carries nothing dated to the Zscaler, Okta or Palo Alto moves. Okta (RSI 76.5), Datadog (73.4), Zscaler (72.9) and Palantir (76.3), which Barchart says hit an all-time high on Friday, are extended; the entry is a retest, not this print.

Power plants repaired; the build-out did not. Talen rose 18.02% on the week, Constellation 15.76% and Vistra 15.33%. Constellation's Tuesday jump followed a Google agreement that MarketWatch says equals a new reactor's output; Vistra's followed a $4.2 billion Energy Department loan commitment reported by The Motley Fool. All three are back above their 200-days but down 14.83% to 23.1% on the year: repairs, not leaders. The capex-funded side lagged. The uranium fund fell 2.24% and sits 19% under its 200-day, and 5 of 19 backup-power makers rose on the week.

Neoclouds: one intact trend, one repair

All ten GPU-hosting names fell on the week, from 1.36% (Cerebras) to 15.73% (IREN); seven rose on Friday. Nebius closed at $221.07, above the $219.70 shelf named in the October 7 market brief and 28.9% above its 200-day on a +66.67% year: a deep pullback in an intact trend. Hut 8 is the change. It rose 5.88% on 1.23 times volume to close 3.6% above its 200-day ($81.37), undoing Thursday's break on a +81.77% year; news pulled Friday holds only an aggregator note on a price-target tweak, so the cause is not on file. CoreWeave ($82.08) is 11.3% under its 200-day on a −42.63% year, and IREN, Cipher, TeraWulf, Applied Digital, Core Scientific and Galaxy sit under theirs: broken. StockAnalysis ties IREN's weekly drop to SemiAnalysis flagging data-center customer concerns. The financing headlines kept coming: Firmus Grid is expected to shelve its Australian IPO (Bloomberg, October 8), a Quinn Emanuel memo on worst cases for data-center debt circulated (Semafor, October 9), and SemiAnalysis argued that rising H100 rents break the depreciation curve lenders underwrite.

The suppliers kept their long trends. Micron sits 46.6% above its 200-day on a +435.02% year after a −4.27% week, and filed its fiscal 2026 annual report on Friday. Lumentum rose 5.22% after its CEO told Bloomberg its optical parts are sold out through early 2029 (relayed on X); it is 3.47% under its high on a +590.64% year. Western Digital is the weak one, 2.1% under its 200-day.

The carriers paid for a network that is still years out. On the first full session after SpaceX agreed to buy Grain Management's 800 MHz licenses (CNBC, October 8), T-Mobile fell 13.27%, AT&T 10.82% and Verizon 10.14%, on 3.66 to 4.3 times normal volume. CNBC called it Verizon's worst day since 2002. AST SpaceMobile fell 10.47% after losing a spectrum source it had pursued (The Economic Times). American Tower rose 9.3% on 2.97 times volume. SpaceX rose 1.25% to $162.57 on ordinary volume, on the day a scheduled lock-up release of up to 328.4 million shares came due. None of the carriers had a trend to defend: Verizon is up 2.01% on the year and 10.5% under its 200-day at RSI 21.8, AT&T is down 15.02% and T-Mobile 34.32%. An oversold reading on a flat or falling year is not an entry. The FCC is scheduled to vote October 29 on seeking comment for 482 MHz more of spectrum for coverage from space (CNBC).

The rest of Friday's tape

Copper and China rallied on the day China's property floor fell away. Copper miners went 7 for 7 at +4.3%, with Bloomberg crediting strengthening Chinese demand signals for copper's weekly gain. Chinese internet stocks went 8 for 8 at +3.1%; the only item on file is an X post relaying a Jefferies top-pick call on Alibaba, whose own news was last pulled September 3, so the cause is not established. The same afternoon Barchart posted that Chinese home prices are at their lowest in at least 20 years. Alibaba is still 14.3% under its 200-day on a −35.88% year: a bounce, not a trend.

Biotech kept its bid; agriculture lost its. Biotech closed 12 of 13 up. Moderna rose 14.21% to a 52-week high on its addition to the Nasdaq-100 (StockAnalysis). Humana rose 11.56% on 3.9 times volume after its 8-K said its 2027 Medicare Advantage Star Ratings beat its goal, with Baird upgrading it to Outperform (The Fly, via Yahoo Finance). The food-security list went 1 of 11 up at a −3.4% median, the only lane that sold as one. Deere fell 9.62% on the week, part of it after the FTC and USDA opened a farm-equipment inquiry (Bloomberg, October 7). Mosaic closed at RSI 23.1, 23.2% under its 200-day on a −43.96% year: broken. Nutrien slipped under its 200-day and the $69 stop named in earlier briefs; Quiver Quantitative ties the slide to its Trinidad nitrogen shutdown. Barchart's "timber" post on corn carried no figure, so Friday's selling has no clean cause.

Supply news pulled oil both ways. Hurricane Isaias shut almost three-quarters of US Gulf oil output (Bloomberg), a pilot was killed in Houthi attacks on Riyadh's airport (CNBC), and a large tanker from the US to Asia now costs up to $77 million to hire, from under $10 million last year (Semafor). Against that, the US struck a deal with Russia to supply diesel to US and world markets (CNBC); Zelensky called lifting the sanctions "not fair and not honest" (Axios, relayed by The Kobeissi Letter). The oil fund ended the week up 0.56% and the Brent fund 1.41%. Valero gave back 2.26% Friday at RSI 69.8; Yahoo Finance framed the G7 stock releases and wider tax-exempt diesel access as a margin test for refiners, and nothing on file ties the drop to the Russian deal. Delta posted its first miss against estimates in two years and cut its 2026 forecast on fuel (CNBC), and the stock closed up 0.04% on 1.49 times volume.

What is quiet

The defense primes moved less than 1% each through a week of tanker attacks and missiles on Riyadh, and none of the 12 defense names sits above its 200-day. Crypto drained from the edges: bitcoin fell 2.55% on the week and holds 14.6% above its 200-day on a −32.35% year, while Marathon, Riot and CleanSpark fell 14.07% to 17.58% and closed under theirs. Gold rose 1.57% Friday and is still 7.5% under its 200-day. Only 3 of 13 quantum names rose Friday. The bargain list is empty, with nothing in its universe under RSI 30. The momentum board holds 481 names, against 492 a week earlier.

The calls

Rocket Lab's watch call is invalidated: it closed at $68.21, under the $68.29 volume shelf the call named. Microsoft closed at $535.07, just under its $535.69 base pivot; a close through it is the trigger. TSMC slipped to $453.31, under its $461.47 pivot, ahead of its October 15 report. NVIDIA, context only, sits at $229.28 under its $236.54 pivot. Two calls are new: a watch on Constellation, for a pullback that holds the $286.14 200-day while RSI cools under 55 and then a close above $300.40, and a pass on AST SpaceMobile until it reclaims its 50-day ($62.85). Lilly sits inside its $1,160–$1,197 zone at $1,179.27. None of the 14 names with three or more signals lit has more than three of the five. The Bloom Energy and Generac deep dives both say wait. Bloom's buy is a retest of $256–$273 that holds, with a $240 stop and its report scheduled for October 27; Generac's is a pullback into $212–$219, with a $198 stop.

Watch Monday: the bond market is closed for Columbus Day while stocks trade (MarketWatch), and FedEx and Nurix are scheduled to report after the close (provider dates). JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and UnitedHealth are scheduled for Tuesday, October 13; the September CPI, ASML, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley for Wednesday, October 14; TSMC for Thursday. The levels: two S&P 500 fund closes above $779.37; the small-cap fund's $277.06 200-day; Nebius's $219.70 shelf and Hut 8's $81.37 200-day; Microsoft's $535.69 pivot. A high-yield spread at 3.50 or a VIX at 20 would turn a rotation into a risk-off market.
